Uh, they have to make money on the thing somehow. It comes down to whether you decide $120/year is worth killing the commercials. I haven't bitten the bullet at this point, but it's definitely a better value to me than, say, cable TV. The jazz selection on Spotify has in some ways gotten a little worse over the last year and a half. Zorn pulled almost all of Tzadik's stuff a year ago and ECM yanked most of their catalog a couple months ago. For medium to large jazz labels, you could still do worse. Most of the Blue Note catalog that was still in print when Spotify launched is still up there, even if some titles were deleted by BN after and have disappeared from stores. The Verve catalogs were mediocre but have gotten much better (including most if not all of the Verve material put out by Mosaic, even the sets that are still in print), and it looks like Concord is finally starting to put a lot of stuff on there from Fantasy labels. This highlights one of the problems of these services. If Blue Note /ECM or any other label has a spat with the service, then what you've enjoyed listening to suddenly disappears.

Everybody still sleeping on the Rangers? Not sleeping on the Rangers, but I've only been at most a casual hockey fan. Since the nuked season I think I've watched maybe an hour of hockey, but this(local team) has me interested. Be nice to have another parade this year on Broadway!

A shame to see this, but Manhattan real estate is verry rough. I've been there a few times and it's a very nice venue, no drinks or food but good music at a low price. Chinatown if nearby, so you can get good and cheap eats there.

Gil Evans all day today on WKCR.

He's a bit unusual. When he gets hit, he seems to get rocked, like 5-6 runs in 2-3 innings. That'll get your ERA up, especially when it's only May. For some reason, the Yanks score a ton of runs when he pitches, so he can also pitch a pretty lousy game and still win. Keep in mind, too, that this is his second year in the majors, so there's still a learning curve. He should get a few days off, he's had some breathing problems due to congestion/bronchitis, something in that neighborhood. He's also a notorious slow starter, with a lot of terrible Aprils. Hopefully, he'll get back in the groove, but at least he's still playing great defense.

Much depends on his contract and who, if anyone will take him in a trade. I think the Lakers are stuck with him.

First thing I thought of when I heard the news...

The Giants did their part to assist the Colts rebuilding plans by skipping over the TE Fleener in the first round. In the Super Bowl the Giants lost TWO TEs to torn ACLs, so I'm figuring they'll take Fleener, who seems to be the consensus pick as best TE in the draft. But Nooooooo, they take a running back, and a few picks later the Colts get Fleener, so now Luck has a good friend and teammate to throw to that he's played with at Stanford. At the same time I can't be really critical of the Giants GM Reese, as I roundly criticized him last offseason for not signing a few players who had wound up having lousy years and then the Giants win the Super Bowl.

Last night Yu was the man, pitching a verry good game against a mighty offensive team. He held the Yanks down and got out of a bases-loaded no out jam unscathed. I was disappointed to see a good outing by Kuroda go to waste, but must tip my cap to Darvish.

I'm jumping in the middle here, so apologies if this has already been answered, but keep in mind that Herbie studied electrical engineering and was always fascinated by gadgets, so it would seem natural for him to grvitate towards synths, etc. Also, he had plenty of grounding in funky stuff, so he wasn't really going too far afield in his funk stuff. Some of it is brilliant, some eh, but such is life...

One new problem that creates is now there will be interleague play all season, as there's an odd number of teams in each league. To DH or not DH, that is the question.

On Friday the 13th I got very lucky musically. I went to see Dr. John at the Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM)and caught a verrrrry funky night of Nawlins music. As guests, the good doctor had Irma Thomas, Donald Harrison,Nicholas Payton,Dirty Dozen Brass band, Ivan Neville and maybe a couple other folks I can't remember. All the guests did a few tunes each with the good doctor, and the evening started out on a high note(When the lights went down I was looking at the stage from my balcony seat, and then I saw everyone looking at the main aisle in the orchestra section.Well, here comes Dr. john leading the march up the aisle with the Dirty Doxen Brass Band playing- magical!)and stayed there all night. Some highlights among many were Dr. John & Nicholas Payton doing a duet, the opening tune, with no bassist but TWO bari saxes(Ronnie Cuber + the guy from Dirty Dozen) and a sousaphone, Irma Thomas doing 'You can have my husband but leave my man alone' and many others. A GREAT night of music in my beloved Brooklyn.
