With the obesity epidemic is that a big band?

The only one I can take anymore is 'Shut Up & Play Your Guitar'- no goofing around or attempts at juvenille humor. What i find so frustrating about Zappa is that he'd have this great tune going and then ruin it with the comedy stuff. To my ears it sucked the life out of his music and diminished it greatly. That's my $0.02

Appears there have been 7 explosions in London
PHILLYQ replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My thoughts go out to all the people in London- it was a barbaric act of cowardice. I work for a large international bank and I talk many times a day with the folks in London. I was relieved to find out that they were all OK- their office is right near one of the affected tube stations. -
Clandy44, Please don't be upset by the reaction and discussion that followed. When you post an article you never know what way the discussion will go. I posted an article once and the discussion went in a completely different direction that what I thought would happen. That's just the way it goes sometimes. I appreciate you posting the article because I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I used to be a member of WBGO, and then they stopped being a full jazz station and then became another arm of the Grouch/Marsalis school of jazz as a museum piece. They also lost me as a member, and now the only time I listen is when they have R'n'B oldies on Saturday morning. At least WKCR(bless their souls) is still around to play the full spectrum of jazz.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
PHILLYQ replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That's exactly it, ScottB. Antibalas was smokin', and between sets I wondered if Soulive could come up to that level of groove, but they did hit 11! It was a great scene, thousands of people in a park dancing and groovin' to the music, including many that were new to the music. -
I was at that concert- it was recorded at City Center in NYC. Great concert.

Best wishes, Chris

On June 24 I saw Antibalas & Soulive at Prospect Park in Brooklyn for a $3 donation. Antibalas laid down some serious grooves and a lot of left-wing commentary and the park jumpin'. Soulive followed and somehow got the groove up a level! Fantastic concert, thousands dancing, deep groove, music of substance, Great time had by yours truly. -
A friend of mine is a Met fan and always calls him Kenny F-----in' Rogers after he walked in the winning run against the Braves one year and knocked the Mets out of the playoffs.

The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in
PHILLYQ replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I picked up a McCoy Tyner disc('Solar') at a closeout/discount joint called Oddjob that mostly sold cheap tools and discontinued merchandise, cheap napkins, etc. I paid $2! -
Maybe the place you saw was on 8Th St. & 6th Ave. Great dogs!

Yesterday was sausage & peppers, today was marinated chicken cutlets(Stubb's- highly recommended for marinades and bbq sauce) & grilled zucchini & red pepper.

Thank you so much for the bithday wishes- and to everyone else, when the time comes, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!! You're all a great gang of folks to hang out in cyberspace(or even in real life!)

Principle vs. principal- the principal principal understood the principle- why don't magazines, newspapers, etc. get that right.

STAX/VOLT - The Complete Soul Singles 1968-71
PHILLYQ replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous Music
SS1, You're in for hours and hours of good tunes- I have the box, and as Jim S. said, the music on there is golden. You got a great deal for that price. Enjoy it! -
Saturday was one of my favorites, Thai Beef Salad. Tonight was chicken cutlets on the grill with some Stubbs basting sauce and some spinach sauteed in olive oil with a heapin' helpin' of garlic.

FRANCIS DAVIS/CLEMENTINE
PHILLYQ replied to PHILLYQ's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
They are the nerd scientists. -
Mine was Mahavishnu Orchestra, "The Inner Mounting Flame". Prior to that I was a rock & blues fan, but someone in the Village Voice voted it as album of the year, so I got it. That led to Miles, then everybody else. 30+ years later I still love the music.

This was in today's Village Voice. It made me laugh out loud after the blistering criticism of Davis by our Clementine: Leaving Out the Saxophone, a Tone Scientist Resurrects Albert Ayler's Spirit Spiritual Unity by Francis Davis June 13th, 2005 3:21 PM write to us e-mail story printer friendly Spiritual Unity Pi The phone rang shortly after I put on Spiritual Unity's self-titled CD for the first time. And recognizing track two as Albert Ayler's "Spirits" from the next room, I thought for a moment there that I was hearing a tenor saxophone—it was Marc Ribot on guitar, heavy on the tremolo. There are really only two types of jazz guitarists anymore: the chord nerds who drool over "Have You Met Miss Jones" and the tone scientists like Ribot who recognize Ayler as kin to Charlie Patton and Dock Boggs. Leaving out the saxophone works in Spiritual Unity's favor: Ribot, trumpeter Roy Campbell, drummer Chad Taylor, and back-from-oblivion bassist Henry Grimes are going for Ayler's essence, not his sound, and invidious comparisons are avoided. Turning cowboy on "Bells," Ribot sounds like he's thinking about his darling Clementine rather than Ayler's holy ghost—a lovely, reflective moment before the crash-bang ending. More than just lending a touch of authenticity, Grimes's powerful bowing keeps everyone on an even keel as they switch from Slug's-era lurch to square dance to (I swear) polka. Taylor dances nimbly on his cymbals, and the criminally underrated Campbell is his usual puckish self. Spirits rejoice! Just what we needed to complete the long overdue Albert Ayler renaissance. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Jackson should have been required to testify." The burden of proof is on the prosecution to prove its case. A defendant can't be forced to testify. I think he's a child molester, but the prosecution offered up a very weak case and he had to be acquitted.

Artists That Have Fallen Off The Stage
PHILLYQ replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I recall hearing the story(I have no idea if this is true or not) that John McLaughlin fell off the stage beacuse he was so stoned/drunk/high in his pre-Mahavishnu days. -

A sports story that doesn't have contract whining, an arrest,or inflated ego- how refreshing! Great story- this kid deserves a medal, as do his parents and brother
