  1. Watch it now..... The streets of North Beach didn't begin to look like that until at least an hour or so after that photo was taken! B-)
  2. Yes, this is something my friend and I call "accidental photography". It comes in many forms but superimposition is chief among them.
  3. That's hilarious. And let us not forget Pettibon's amazing Minutemen covers as well. More to the point, I'm a huge fan of Richter's work and was not aware of this project. I can usually go either way with Frisell, not a big fan of modern guitar, but thanks for the heads up! Sounds interesting.

Do yourself a favor and grab Nation Time and listen to "Shakey Jake" immediately. No shit.
  5. Someone probably did. It's not the same sign. Font is different. But very clearly the same address.
  6. ...while cruising around North Beach in SF. (Sorry about the focus. I don't use a flash at night.)
  7. Brandon, I had no idea ... I am going to check that out when I have time. I knew Dick when I was at KU, had him for a couple of classes, made contact with him a couple times post-graduation. More than anyone else, Dick fostered my interest in jazz. Share more about the archive or PM me when you have a chance. Eric PS - I picked tobacco two summers ... PSS - Just walked by Murphy on Sat after watching the Hawks spank the Horns I had three classes with Dick as an undergrad and later on in grad school. Can't say enough warm things about him. A wonderful ambassador to the music. When I began working at the archive in 1999 it was in near complete disarray. Dick had passed away within the year, and it was quicky turning into an abandoned garage sale. Collections were misfiled or in completely different places and one of them--a significant donation of some 5,000 LPs--had yet to be processed. In fact, they were not only still in boxes, the boxes were stacked on top of one another...and had been for months. (Yikes!) Replaced shelving. Acquired CD burner w/ analog inputs so we could burn surrogate "listener" copies. Re-organized shelving order and integrated previosuly mentioned collection into the greater whole. Created web site. Created online database of holdings (which now appears to be down since they're switching out the computer that acts as the database's server). Created lending policies and preservation plan. Assisted researchers. Etc.... It was a great time. I basically have that job to thank for getting me into archiving, as I was not yet a trained archivist or librarian. Like I said, I had spent a great deal of time there and was very familiar with the collection and several faculty members. Also, I studied the cultural history of post-War American music as an undergrad so this stuff was my bread and butter. When they ran out of grant money to pay me I moved to Austin to get an MLS in sound collection preservation. And now I'm here in Palo Alto typing away.... B-)
  8. 33 Degrees. They closed in 2004.
  9. In my opinion, Austin is woefully lacking in used LP shops. Waterloo has some used records but, in their words, they don't pay "collectors prices". As a result, they don't get very may collectible records. Lot's of reissues though. Including most of the Get Back and Sundazed stuff (BYGs, soul, blaxploitation, psychedelic, folk, etc). Also lot's of new hip hop 12"es and indie rock. A new shop went in just before I moved called Sound on Sound and I've had some good luck there. Again, mostly rock but almost entiely used vinyl. Definitely worth a visit, I'd say. Another one is Antone's. I have found some great stuff in the past but that's probably because it was on my way home from UT so I'd stop and look in the new arrival bins just about every other day. The jazz section is big. There's just nothing interesting in it (unless, of course, you're in the market for Freddie Hubbard records from 1982). Other than that, it's mostly just a bunch of "Bud Light blues" records. Used to be a place called The Sound Exchange on Guadalupe. They specialized in punk rock but had a decent amount of jazz, I guess. A lot of it was crap too but they didn't really know very much about jazz there. (Hey, fair enough. You can't know everything.) As a result, though, I once found an original copy of Autobiography in Jazz on Debut for all of six bucks there. Rule #1 of record shopping: Find out what genres are most valued by the folks who run the shop. Then look for records in every genre but the ones they value. B-)
  10. Thanks for posting this list Kevin. EDIT: I should add that, like some of the others, I have almost all of these titles already and will probably not be caving for sonic upgrades. Nice titles though. Many that I would recommend to others. Esp: Judgement, Oblique, Symph for Improvisers, Inventions & Dimensions.
  11. Do you check Turntable Lab on a regular basis? It's a shop in NYC that sells mostly hip hop records and DJ equipment. But, like any good old schooler, they've got a hand in design as well. Go to [books/mags/design shop] in the pull-down menu and check out the books and prints. They have detail pics of each book as well--at least a few pages, just to give you an idea what's inside. Cool stuff and (like me) they're all about Swiss School. I get my brother a couple of books from these guys every holiday season. These in particular are very good: Buro Destruct II Ego: The Difference Between Telling and Selling Book Los Logos
  12. Coming in April......
  13. I'm a graphic designer and I wish I had your job. This field is pretty saturated right now. I know. My younger brother is feeling the hurt.
  14. medjuck: Dunno. Sometimes a seller, usually from Mexico, will include the name of the artist along with the item description. Doesn't particularly matter for me as I'm not familiar with any of them. couw: Those are nice. I'm beginning to think that I really should have been a graphic designer. I just can't get enough of that stuff....
  15. That's really cool. I'd love to see more. Y'know, something just occurred to me right now. Seems funny to me that the thing I like the most about the Mexico 68 design scheme is its reliance on Swiss School technique (grid system, few colors, two-dimentional, no shading, etc). This is most apparent on the marksmanship and basketball posters, of course.
  16. * vintage Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Kings memorabilia. * all of my dinner plates are mis-matched US state plates that I usually get for a buck or two at varying flea markets. They're fun and educational. You'll know more about the great state of Montana after coming over to my place for breakfast than you ever imagined you would. And if you break one.....who gives a damn. You just go buy another. I have several state glasses as well. * last summer I developed a facsination with the graphic design scheme from the 1968 Olymics in Mexico.... I ended up buying both of these on ebay.....
  17. * grocery clerk * mowed lawns * warehouse stock boy at a printing company * runner for statisticians at Arrowhead Staduim (KC Chiefs) * banquet service * waited tables (very briefly) * record store clerk * bartender * radio DJ * live DJ * music writer/columnist * archivist (Richard F. Wright Jazz Archive) * audio digitization engineer (University of Texas-Austin, Library of Congress)
  18. Librarian. More specifically, audio media preservation.
  19. Whaaaa? Dr. Smith is the master, it's hard to imagine him being on some "roller skating rink" stuff. If so, that's one hip skating rink. Maybe it wasn't roller rink. I dunno. But definitely wasn't Mosambique, which is the way I prefer to hear Lonnie so....
  20. I'm glad to hear that this is good. I saw the Dr with Maceo and company about four years ago and he was definitely on some *roller rink* shit. It wasn't very good.
  21. If you like Cool Blues then I have to assume you'll like The Sermon and House Party as they're from the same era in his career. Similar sound. BTW: I much prefer this stuff over the Back at the Chicken Shack.
  22. I'm gonna send you a PM about the Soft Machine and Biz Mark CDs is about 30 seconds......
