  1. I had a gut feeling they were going to blow the lead in the 2'nd half and unfortunately proved me right. You just can't keep the Brazilians down for 90 minutes.
  2. Billy Mays, star pitchman, dead at 50 The booming bearded TV hawker behind products such as Oxiclean and Mighty Putty has died. By Vivian Kuo CNN June 28, 2009: 1:34 PM ET (CNN) -- Billy Mays, the man with the booming voice famous for fronting products such as Oxiclean and Orange Glo in TV commercials, has died. Tampa police say Mays' wife Deborah found him unresponsive at his Tampa-area home Sunday morning. Tampa Fire Rescue pronounced him deceased at 7:45 a.m. The cause of death is unknown. Police say there were no signs of forced entry to the residence and there is no suspected foul play. Police said Mays was on the US Airways flight from Philadelphia that had a hard landing Saturday at Tampa International Airport after the front tire under the nose of the plane blew out. Tampa officials say the Medical Examiner's Office expects to complete an autopsy by Monday. In a statement, Deborah Mays said that although "Billy lived a public life," the family does not plan immediate public statements about his death.
  3. 2 thumbs up for the Carmell Jones. At present I don't own any music of Randy Weston and the lineup on this set make it awfully tempting.
  4. Yes, good music! The quartet is marvellous! Those "Plays" albums (by Charlie, Stu Williamson, Max Bennett...) should have been given the same treatment as the "Kenton Presents" sessions got... but Bethlehem is beyond reach for Mosaic, alas. I agree, it's great stuff. I already had the Japanese 2in1 Mariano Bethlehem set and now decided that it's about time I get the Stu Williamson 2in1 as well. The Max Bennett stuff doesn't seem quite as interesting judging from the lineup. Thanks for plugging this album. I purchased the Fresh Sounds release and should have this in my mailbox very soon.
  5. Can't hurt to place a phone call. One of my orders was messed up not long ago and I just gave them a call and I just reordered it. They're pretty good over the phone.
  6. To be honest, I don't notice a bit of difference in signal quality before and after. I already own a high def TV and hi def box from the cable company. The cable company(Time Warner) has an offering of channels CBS, NBC, ABC, ESPN, CNN, and other usual suspects, set aside in the 700 - 800 channel range and those channels are incredibly clear. Watching a ball game is absolutely unbelievable on these channels.
  7. Oliver Nelson: The Argo, Verve and Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions - Discs 2 and 3
  8. Hope you don't mind me asking a stupid question? I understand the SACD's will run off a normal cd player which I presently own. Question, will the sound quality still be superior to a normal cd?
  9. Carmel Jones with some fine assistance from Harold Land.
  10. Oliver Nelson - The Argo, Verve and Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions - Disc 1 It's been a long time since I last heard this set. Great way to spend the day off from work.
  11. Welcome to the group, Richard. May this be the first of many fine sets you'll acquire.Let us know what you think?
  12. I already own a couple albums on the King label which feature strictly instrumentals and those with Freddie on vocals. The Shelter stuff I don't own mainly because of the very mixed reviews I've encountered over the years. The only date from the 70's which I do own is "Live At The Electric Ballroom" which was released on the Black Top label. Definitely worth owning, IMO.
  13. Looks like this one has now moved to the top of my list at yourmusic.
  14. Call me crazy, but I've never quite warmed up to the Johnny Hodges set and would make that available in exchange for perhaps the Kenton Presents, maybe the Woody Shaw. PM me if you think we could work out something.
  15. The track "Back And Blow" by Phil Woods from the album "Early Quintets". Love the chemistry on this one between Woods, John Wilson and Jimmy Raney.
  16. "Escape Velocity" from the Woody Shaw album "Stepping Stones". Shaw, Carter Jefferson and Onaje Allan Gumbs smoke on this. The audience at The Village Vanguard seem to agree.
  17. Nice date. Surprised to see it still sitting out there.
  18. I've been more of a lurker on this thread but just wanted to quickly add my 2 cents and move on. Imagine what it would be like without this place to post? Pretty depressing prospect? Please guys I really enjoy this place. Let's lock down this thread and talk jazz. Let's do it for Jim.
  19. I've been thinking recently about seriously beefing up on my rather paltry collection of Monk releases. I probably own a half dozen releases at best. I figured a good starting point would be Monk's Music. Now the question is this. A friend has told me I should seek out the K2 version rather than the standard issue which is widely available. He claims the K2 far exceeds the standard issue. I've looked on Amazon Marketplace and the prices range for a new copy from $21.99 to upwards of nearly $70. Normally I wont spend over 20 bucks for a single disc and I'm certainly not going to spend anything close to 70! I guess what I'm asking is it really that big of a difference sound quality wise and would it be worth spending the extra cash when I could buy a good deal of Monk's other releases at the same time?

    John Wilson

Thanks for the info on John Wilson, fellas. I wasn't certain just how much input I would receive here? Just goes to show this place is an amazing resource of information. To Larry: I just ordered the Phil Woods Early Quintets album from Newbury Comics for the bargain price of 5.99. Look forward to hearing it.
