Tough League for 1B'ers. Pujols, Howard, Berkman, Lee, Fielder... not sure about the others but think the .230 BA, pace for 250 SO's, and low OBP have anything to do with it? Oh I don't have a problem w/ it. I think Pujols and Berkman definitely should go before Howard and Gonzalez was a good choice. I was just noting that it was the first time in 60 years that the league leader in HRs and RBIs didn't make the team. HOWEVER.... I am wondering why the Cubs' fans voted in Kosuke Fukudome as a starter. A rookie w/ a .281avg, 8HR, & 36 RBIs gets in over Matt Holiday(.343/14/51), Xavier Nady(.320/12/55), Carlos Lee(.293/21/72), etc.? WTF???

So Ryan Howard is the first player since 1948 to lead a league in home runs and RBIs to not make the All Star team.

Howard goes deep twice to lift Phillies http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080710/ap_on_...dinals_phillies PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Howard homered twice and drove in three runs to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Thursday. Howard lined a two-run shot to left-center off Braden Looper (9-7) in the first and connected again in the sixth. He now leads the National League with 27 homers, two better than teammate Chase Utley, and 83 RBIs. Howard was batting in the .160s in early May, was at .215 coming into this month and was upset after hearing some mild boos from the finicky fans. But the former MVP is 18-for-51 over a 13-game hitting streak that's lifted his average to .234 and he's heard nothing but wild cheers after every deep home run. While he still leads the league in strikeouts, manager Charlie Manuel said he could live with the whiffs as long as Howard produces runs and hits in big moments. He hit the tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's 4-2 victory and set a team record for most RBIs before the All-Star break.

Prostate cancer is pretty curable. My Father-in-Law discovered that he had it about 18 months ago. He is 71 and probably had it for years(the last time he went to the doctors was when Reagan was in office.) Anyway, his doctor told him he was too old for the surgery so he went the radiation and chemo route instead. He is fine now. Two guys that I work w/ had the surgery. They have both had all kinds of complications, which I won't go into here. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that not being able to have the surgery is not necessarily a bad thing. Good luck and stay positive.

So now it looks like the Sixers have the inside track on Brand and I gotta say that I'm not happy. I would much rather see them get Josh Smith than Brand. I think Smith fits in better w/ the Sixers' run n' gun offense. He's only 23 so I can only see him getting better. Brand is 29 and didn't play last year because of a knee injury(Hmm.. overpriced power forward w/ bad knees... Chris Webber anyone???) Even if he's healthy(which isn't a given at this point) he's too fat to run up and down the floor w/ the rest of the thoroughbreds on the Sixers. Really hoping they lose out on the Brand sweepstakes.

Holy crap. After I jinxed them and ended their scoring run in the 8th the Rockies have tied it @ 17 in the bottom of the 9th.

Anyone following the Marlins/Rockies game?? The Marlins are batting in the top of the 8th and are leading 17-16. Crazy game. The Rockies have scored in every inning.

I think I'll go see it again. Maybe take one of my kids this time. AMAZING movie. But then, I've never seen a Pixar film I didn't think was extraordinary (well, "Cars" was probably the weakest of the bunch). I love the film's vision of mankind's future (without walking)! I agree, Cars was the most humdrum Pixar movie, but still not bad. Wall-E is one of those that's probably spoiled me for new releases for a while because nothing else can begin to compete. I loved "Cars". Its one of those films you have to see more than once to really"get" it. So many little jokes that fly by you the first couple of times. I have probably watched the DVD in excess of 50 times. That kind of stuff(watching movies repeatedly) happens when A LOT when you live in a house w/ a 4 year old.... We saw "Wall-E" on the opening day. My son's first movie theater experience. He actually made it through the entire film without getting fidgetity. I didn't do as well. In the trailers for the film one of the producers talks about a lunch that the Pixar brain trust had where they came up with the ideas for "Monsters, Inc.", "Cars", "Finding Nemo", and "Wall-E". I can see why they held off on "Wall-E". Good, but not great. Though I admit I probably went in with high expectations. Definitely better than last summer's Pixar offering - "Ratatouille".

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Exactly 20 years after warning America about global warming, a top NASA scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world's only hope is drastic action. James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the "dangerous level" for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth's atmosphere can stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for only a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises. "We're toast if we don't get on a very different path," said Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Sciences who is sometimes called the godfather of global warming science. "This is the last chance." Read the full article here.

Pg.220,"Bowie, his wife Fontella Bass, Jarman, Mitchell, and Favors - boarded the S.S. United States, bound for France." The S.S. United States has been docked for the past 12 years here in Philly and it is just rusting away. I'm not sure if can be saved at this point. Definitely not seaworthy. Here's a link to a history (and photo from 2005)of it from Wiki.
