  1. Up a final time in memory. When I saw Harold at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis I showed him this program on my cellphone, and he seemed pleased that I’d put it together, which made me happy too. I never got around to doing a sequel. A Few Miles From Memphis: Harold Mabern, The Early Years
  2. I saw him around the same time at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis... got to chat with him a bit after the show. An old-school jazz soul for sure.
  3. Smoke Sessions is reporting that Harold Mabern has passed away. 😔
  4. Per Dave's comment quoted in your post, I think it says less about the "pressure of pitching in New York" than it says about the Yankees' coaching staff and approach. Gray's not the first pitcher who's underperformed in NY, and I don't buy much into the "can't handle the Big Apple" theory about that. Really hoping that the Yankees move on from Larry Rothschild and/or whoever in the front office is directing rotation-pitcher strategy.
  5. for Nate Chinen's Playing Changes. Beginning this on the heels of her amazing concert Monday night in Detroit:
  6. We recently re-aired Jazz Scene San Francisco and it remains archived for online listening. It features music from Dave Brubeck, Vince Guaraldi, John Handy, Cal Tjader, Lu Waters and the Yerba Buena Jazz Band, and others.
  7. Only have Essential, which I bought about a thousand years ago or so, but I love it. Haven't gone deeper into the catalogue, though.
  8. Steve Dalanchinsky, poet who chronicled and championed jazz avant-garde, dies at 72
  9. The take I developed on this when I was much younger (in my early 20s) is that it's more simply a matter of vhronological proportion. If you are 10 years old, a year represents 1/10th of your lifetime (remember how long a year seemed when you were a kid?). By the time you're 30, a year represents 1/30th of your lifetime... by age 50, 1/50th, etc. The same applies to days, weeks, months, or whatever standard of measurement you're using. So your sense of how long a certain division of time takes to pass is naturally going to seem less and less as you continue to get older.
  10. Great news! I know the status of this set has been very touch-and-go since Sony initiated its new policy, so this is definitely a good sign that it’s still progressing.
  11. Not enough time to look them up right now, but there are numerous listings for Reese in the Central Avenue Sounds book index.
  12. That seems like a very fair critique of Vandermark's playing--but it sounds as if the import of your original post is to suggest that he's overrated, rather than "close to a charlatan." Wiki's definition of "charlatan": A charlatan (also called a swindler or mountebank) is a person practicing quackery or some similar confidence trick or deception in order to obtain money, fame or other advantages via some form of pretense or deception. Synonyms for "charlatan" include "shyster", "quack", or "faker". So perhaps this seems like splitting semantic hairs, except that "charlatan" pretty clearly connotes somebody knowingly deceiving others and proactively inflating his/her reputation for some kind of personal gain, whether it be financial reward or critical approval. I don't get the sense that KV goes around doing that, or touting his saxophone prowess. I've only talked with him at length once, for about an hour (it was an interview for WFIU), and he seemed pretty down to earth about his own abilities as a player. FWIW I agree that Rempis is an outstanding musician. I've heard him live only twice, once with Tyler Damon and once in some sort of Vandermark context (that escapes my memory at the moment--it might have been KV5, many years ago here in Bloomington), have several of his recordings, and find him a joy to listen to.
  13. Thanks much for the recommendation--I'll try to track down The Happy Island as well.
  14. I'll second Larry's opinion, though I've read only Turn, Magic Wheel myself. I have both Library of America volumes as well as a copy of her published diaries and hope to settle in for more of her work sometime in the future. Seems as if the LOAs comprise both her NYC-based and Ohio-based novels, correct?
  15. Hey Steve, thanks for the shout out to Tyler Damon here--he's a friend of mine, lived in Bloomington for a few years before recently moving to Chicago. An amazing musician for sure. Saw him last with Dave Rempis at Bloomington's Blockhouse and they all but set the place on fire.
  16. Is there anything about Lloyd Reese in Steve Isoardi's Central Avenue Sounds book? I'll have to check my copy when I go into the station later today.
  17. Anthony Braxton and a lot of other top-notch musicians don't seem to find KV a "charlatan," which is quite a charge to level against him--a little heavier than simply saying he's not aesthetically developed to one's tastes. As for the dedications, some may find them pretentious, but they've always struck me merely as KV's attempt to hip people to the artists he admires. Worse crimes have been committed in the history of jazz.
  18. In Paris a couple of weeks ago:
  19. I still make CD-R mixes for myself to listen to at home or in the car, mostly as soundtracks for fiction-writing projects. I also made one for my girlfriend this summer, but that was a real spur-of-the-moment throwback project. I think most people these days if so inclined simply put together a Spotify playlist.
  20. Looks like there may be a new Japanese reissue of this album? I’d love to pick it up (especially given Carl Perkins’ participation), but will definitely want to make sure I’m getting the original unedited version.
  21. Of much less consequence, but the Yankees and Twins are also neck-and-neck in the race to set the new MLB team HR record (which was just set anew last year when the Yankees hit 267). NY’s at 285 with 150 games played, the Twins at 283 with 148 games played. Both teams on pace to end up with 300 or more, which is insane. And the Yankees have been without Giancarlo Stanton for almost the entire season (1 HR in 9 games), while Aaron Judge has missed significant time as well (he's fifth on the team in HRs, behind Torres, Sanchez, LeMahieu, and Gardner). Crazy year.
  22. Many thanks to the poster who recently mentioned this Toots Thielemans collection—picked up a used copy as a result:
  23. A fellow Paisley Underground fanatic here. Have we already talked about the recent 3 x 4 release, on which four of the bands reunited to cover one another’s songs? One of my overall favorites for 2019, to be sure. Re Nuggets, I have the excellent Nuggets II box that draws on the late-60s British scene (bought both of these with an employee discount when I worked at Borders in the late 1990s) and just yesterday was inspired to order a used copy of the San Francisco Nuggets box as well. I’d love to also pick up the Los Angeles set, but it seems scarcer and more expensive. As excited as I am to see Patti Smith tomorrow night, I’ll also feel the need to genuflect before Mr. Kaye on the strength of the original Nuggets compilation alone.
  24. Got your email about this--all of my reference books that might contain any information are at my office. I'll be there tomorrow and will try to see if I can find out anything. I'm also going to post your query to the West Coast jazz listserv, given that Donati recorded for Tampa.
