  1. Surprised any of that product's left after the Mad Men and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood set-design folks made a run on the store. I myself would be tempted to go for that decadent Magnavox color TV that turns on in only 12 seconds and comes with automatic picture stabilizer! Costs 133 books... darn, I'm still short a few.
  2. Night Lights show on the topic, which also mentions a couple of books about jazz expatriates: Paris Noir: African-American Jazz Musicians In France The program also includes the Art Ensemble of Chicago, which I don't think has been mentioned yet in this thread.
  3. Working on a Night Lights show for next week about Parlan and Turrentine's early-1960s recordings and came across this thread. The Mosaic booklets for both Parlan and Turrentine offer some good background information, and I'm digging into a few book passages that pop up on Jazzinstitut's bibliographic index, but any additional suggestions for further reading are welcome.
  4. Wow, talk about Throwback Thursday... hadn't thought of those in years. I'll ask Scott if Mosaic accepts them! Update from Scott: both sets shipping "late this month or early next month." Jsngry, you have not yet placed an order for the Mobley set. And Mosaic does not accept Green Stamps.
  5. Anybody receive a shipping notice for this or the Mobley yet, or chatted with Scott in the past week or so about ETA for both sets? If not, I might try to call him myself and post any updates that he passes along.
  6. Wynton and Lester Bowie were both early champions of Carter, which is testament to how many corners his talent can occupy.
  7. Thought I'd bump this show in light of the news regarding the forthcoming Desmond Mosaic box set: After Brubeck: Paul Desmond 1968-1977
  8. Very sorry to hear this, Larry. It sounds as if he made quite a cultural contribution. Given your nearly lifelong friendship, I'm sure that's quite a loss to bear. Thanks for sharing this here on the board.
  9. Wow redux! Can't wait to get this... I have only the single 2000 Verve/A & M CD. Fantastic news!
  10. Season of the juiced-up ball: the Twins have already broken the season record for most HRs by a team that the Yankees set just last year. The Yankees hit 74 HRs in August, shattering the previous record for most HRs by one team in a single month (58). And with Mike Ford’s 10th HR today, NY has tied the record they set last year of most players on a team with 10 or more HRs (12).
  11. We re-aired Postwar Prez this past week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  12. Yeah, I forgot about that. Thanks for the feedback—it will probably be awhile before I’m able to delve into the Mercy books, but I’ll definitely start with Call It Sleep. I also have Shifting Landscape, which gathers a number of Roth’s essays and short stories together, including what remains of his aborted second novel.
  13. Paul—what did you think of this? I just picked up the omnibus edition that includes all four novels and have An American Type (which was assembled after Roth’s death) on order. But I shamefully have to confess that I still haven’t gotten around to Call It Sleep after all these years and feel I should read it first before diving into HR’s “comeback” period.
  14. Saw that shortly after it aired back in 2017. Judge is genuinely likable, unlike, say, Derek Jeter, whom I loved and admired as a player, but who even in his glory years struck me as a cold and somewhat prickly dude at heart.
  15. Late-period Fitzgerald, including the Pat Hobby stories, which I’m always happy to re-read:
  16. Aaron Judge promises to hit home run for elderly fan in wheelchair (whom he'd gone over to greet because said fan, a retired Los Angeles school teacher, is the father of a Yankee bullpen coach), then delivers.
  17. This is one of several reasons why I've steadily lost interest in following football as an adult. Obviously it's a game that involves a high degree of sophisticated skill-sets, strategies, and on-the-field, in-the-moment intelligence. Still, there's no getting around that much of it requires trying to pummel the stuffing out of fellow human beings.
  18. Miles isn't dead--he just plays funny! Kidding aside, I assume you mean the forthcoming Rubberband release. I've heard the material that was included on a box-set of Miles' Warner Bros recordings, but have to admit that I'm slightly dubious about the "finished" album that's coming out. I'll definitely give it a listen, though.
