  1. Much appreciation from me as well, Jim. I read Musician from time to time in the mid-1980s for its coverage of R.E.M. and other emerging bands in the indie-rock scene, the music that I was deeply into at the time.
  2. I love that Bailey set! Another one that I go all the way through every several years.
  3. Evidently Lee Konitz was supposed to attend but won’t be coming. For Boston-area and New England board members who might be interested, here’s the schedule: Presentations by Eunmi Shim and Neil Olmstead “The Life and Music of Lennie Tristano” Monday, March 25, 1-3pm Berk Recital Hall (1140 Boylston Street, Boston) Presentation by Lewis Porter “How Lennie Learned to Play ‘Out’: the ‘Avant-Garde’ side of Tatum and other pianists before Tristano” Tuesday, March 26, 1-3pm Berk Recital Hall (1140 Boylston Street, Boston) Conversation with David Liebman* and Jimmy Halperin *Berklee Global Jazz Institute Artist in Residence “Tristano’s Teaching” Tuesday, March 26, 7-8pm Media Center Lab at Stan GetzLibrary, Room 106 (150 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston) Conversation with Dave Frank and Jimmy Halperin “Tristano’s Influence” Wednesday, March 27, 1-3pm Red Room at Cafe 939 (939 Boylston Street, Boston) Performance by Dave Frank and Jimmy Halperin Wednesday, March 27, 7-8pm Oliver Colvin Recital Hall (1140 Boylston Street, Boston)
  4. Love him! A bummer that Fantastic Voyage went dormant before they could issue the followup set that Dave Penny mentions at the end of the liner notes. Right now, finally getting around to this BGO twofer that I picked up last year:
  5. Just ordered the 2004 BGO reissue that combines this and King Kong (Ponty’s Zappa tribute)... curious to hear both albums myself.
  6. Like you, I've seen only the two who are still alive--Rollins (1999 in Indianapolis) and Golson (2004 in Indianapolis).
  7. Right, but I guess I hadn't remembered such situations--at least in which the games actually counted towards the oncoming season's standings and preceded the official Opening Day. Speaking of overseas matchups, I believe the Yankees are meeting the Red Sox in London this year for a two-game series at the end of June.
  8. Check out ESPN's MLB standings--the games apparently counted, and Seattle now sits atop the AL West: MLB standings (ESPN) I learned of it only through a link on the Yankees' site, about Tanaka watching Ichiro Suzuki's retirement (which came at the end of this series): Ichiro announces retirement after series finale
  9. It was a great quartet set, conventionally “jazzier” (whatever that may mean these days) than Universal Beings. Great demograpic range of ages, much younger than a standard jazz audience. At times it sounded to me like 60s Coltrane mixed with the Headhunters. They mostly did McCraven’s originals, along with a slow-heating version of “Blue In Green.” Pretty sure they’re also playing at Big Ears, for anybody on the board who’s attending and interested.
  10. So wait—Opening Day was actually yesterday, in a way?! A’s and Mariners squared off in Tokyo for a two-game series?
  11. Absolutely fantastic set for anybody who’s at all into Maxwell Davis, or simply into the late 1940s/early 50s West Coast jazz/R & B era. So glad this collection exists... talk about an unsung figure!
  12. Makaya McCraven last night at the Blockhouse in Bloomington. Rumors of the demise of jazz have been greatly exaggerated.
  13. Thanks, definitely going to check this out--I've been working on a Night Lights Tristano centennial show that will air in a few weeks.
  14. Posting this week’s Night Lights show a bit early in honor of the Nat King Cole centennial—the music and story of Cole’s groundbreaking 1956-57 TV variety program: “The Jackie Robinson of Television”: The Nat King Cole Show It also airs at 10 this evening on Michigan’s Blue Lake Public Radio.
  15. Yeah, the two guys we just signed to extensions. Not great, Bob!
