  1. Listening to the newly-released CD version of this:
  2. We recently re-aired “Jazz Nocturnes” and it remains archived for online listening.
  3. The polling requests usually get sent out around mid-November, but I haven't seen anything yet about a 2018 poll. Even if NPR chose to no longer host it, I'd imagine he would find another site to post the results (and in the past there's been another site where he's published the ballots in full), assuming that a poll happens again. Will provide an update if I hear anything...
  4. Whoa! I have the Retrieval edition referred to above, but hard to take a pass on something with any kind of Off The Record involvement... I'll probably get. Thanks for the heads-up.
  5. Hey gang, I’m working on a Night Lights show about the San Francisco jazz scene circa 1930s/40s to 70s and am looking for a good representative Lu Watters or Turk Murphy track to use. I have nothing by them in my own collection or in the ststion’s library... any recommendations for something that I might be able to then track down in digital form?
  6. As great a year as Mookie had, from my division-rival standpoint J.D. was more of a difference-maker for the Red Sox this season.
  7. This one seems to be getting a lot of good buzz--will be curious to see it: Green Book ... Shirley's an interesting figure to me. I have only one of his CDs, a best-of I picked up used for $2.99 a couple of years ago, and news of this movie sent me to the couple of previous Organissimo threads that exist about him. The historical context of the movie is intriguing as well. (Mods: feel free to move to "Artists" section if that seems like a more appropriate subforum for this topic.)
  8. Full-length obituary from Nate Chinen at NPR: Roy Hargrove, Grammy-Winning Jazz Trumpeter, Dies At 49
  9. Not a fan of going for Machado over Harper... not at all.
  10. Same here. Excuse me while my bank balance disappears...
  11. An excellent 4-CD distillation of Sinatra’s Columbia period:
  12. Nice Facebook tribute from my friend Stefan, a young bassist in his early 20s: >>I just learned of the passing of jazz trumpet legend Roy Hargrove. I think this is the first time I have felt true grief at the passing of a musical icon. Roy was the reason a lot of cats, myself included, pursued jazz. I still remember the first time I heard “Hard Groove” by the RH Factor in 9th grade. If I could point to one moment in time that made me sure I wanted to pursue music, it was that moment. He was, in my opinion, the greatest melodicist of our time. He had inimitable style, both musically and in fashion. He was a master of bebop and swing, as well as a bridge to R&B and Hip Hop. He incorporated Rappers and Neo Soul beats long before a lot of people were called “innovative,” simply for doing what Roy had done 10 years earlier. And he came by it naturally, as a member of the Hip Hop and Neo Soul collective The Soulquarians, playing on such as albums as D’angelo’s “Voodoo” and Common’s “Like Water for Chocolate.” I’d hear people talk about how great the “horn sections” were on those records. I’d say, “horn section? That’s literally just Roy.” And only Roy. He was all you needed to bring a record to life. I will be forever grateful that I got to see him play before he left us. Even in his deteriorating health, he still swung, and played with such style and grace that I had never heard before. Rest in Power #RoyHargrove<<
  13. Pre-ordered from the label itself, still waiting for it; definitely eager to hear!
  14. That was my first reaction when listening to the new McBride several days ago, that it's very much in Ornette-quartet tribute mode. Interesting trend. I haven't heard The Creep yet.
  15. He was an inspiration to a lot of younger jazz musicians whom I know—very sad news.
  16. Let me know what you think! Tonight... finally!
  17. Amazon tells me it's "out for delivery," so I guess I'll finally get to crack this one open sometime this evening. Washington Post review
  18. Sounded really good the first time through! I'd initially held off on buying it, because I've already got so much live Woody from the late 1970s/early 80s... but on the basis of the glowing notices here, I decided to go ahead and snag it. And do not regret doing so!
  19. I’m off from work this week, so what do I do? Listen to even more jazz! (And plan future programs) He’s playing at the Village Vanguard for two weeks in December—wish I was going to be in NYC around that time.
