  1. It's on the Bud Powell Mythic Sound CD EARLY YEARS OF A GENIUS: 1944-48. A few years ago Fantasy started to repackage and reissue all of the Mythic Sound material, but they seem to have stopped after 3 CDs... result of the Concord sale, perhaps? Allen, I think the Cootie/Bud track on DEVILIN' TUNE is actually "Floogie Boo."
  2. Posting this on Bud Powell's birthday--a program highlighting his radio and concert performances from the 1940s and early 50s, when he was in his unadulterated prime: Burning With Bud: Bud Powell Live 1944-53 You can hear him doing a duet of "West End Blues" with Cootie Williams, a Williams small-group broadcast of Mary Lou Williams' "Roll 'Em," with the 5nd Street All Stars at the Royal Roost and at Carnegie Hall as a leader in the late 1940s, and much more.
  3. Moms--I've always dug Clark's songs for the Byrds (such as this one, plus "Feel a Whole Lot Better," "Here With You," etc.), but I haven't checked out his solo work. I'll take a look at the Clark section in Landlocked when I'm down there later this week; any particular recs for original albums or anthologies?
  4. I know Bosox fans have been desperately searching for the "turning point" moment, but Ellsbury's 14th-inning HR last night might truly have been it. When I heard Proctor was coming in to pitch for NY, I nearly logged out of GameDay... knew it would soon be over. Statistically the game meant nothing to NY, but it meant more to Boston than simply staying a game ahead of the Rays in the wild-card chase; and as we've seen in the past, it's not a good idea to let Boston get back up off the ground when they've been knocked down so badly.
  5. Fave of mine as well, aloc, though I don't catch it nearly as much as I'd like to these days. Thanks for posting.
  6. "Shot By Warhol" at the IU Art Museum.
  7. Need I mention again how happy I continue to be that the Cliff-Lee-for-Jesus-Montero trade fell through last year? Jesus Montero goes 3-4 w/HR, double, 4 RBIs against Boston Can't see how he doesn't make the postseason roster at this point.
  8. Best birthday wishes, Ron, and may great jazz and other blessings continue to fill your life!
  9. Jsngry--I just read that if Detroit and Texas finish with the same W-L record, Detroit gets the tiebreaker for better playoff positioning, meaning that the Tigers would face Boston (assuming Boston does indeed hang on to win the wild-card, which I think they will), and the Yankees would go up against the Rangers in the ALDS. It also looks like NY may yet again be looking at a possible three-man rotation for the playoffs--CC, Nova, and To Be Determined, followed by CC on short rest and Nova on regular rest. But I'm concerned about the way we'll be using CC... he's been in a six-man rotation of late, which is not good at all for him (stats bear that out), and then suddenly will be going to pitching on three days' rest. I think a NY-Texas series would be a hell of a rematch, actually.
  10. Robertson has been absolutely amazing this year. Not sure NY would be in 1st without him, given that Joba (who was actually having a decent year) was lost for the season, and Soriano was out for a long time as well. Robertson's been absolute money as an 8th-inning set-up man for Mo.
  11. Jsngry: the Angels are now as close to the Red Sox in the WC chase as the Rays are. I still think Boston makes the playoffs; the math remains in their favor, with a 2.5 game lead and only 6 games left. (And I still keep thinking about the 2000 Yankees; which Boston team will show up in the playoffs, the April-September team or the May-August team? Though there's some delicious irony right now in their relying on us to keep TB in their rearview mirror, I'm by no means writing them off as a club that could storm through the playoffs, if they find their summer groove again.) Still, you're right, L.A. is really pouring it on in the homestretch. I'm also interested to see what happens with Detroit and Texas vis-a-vis final W-L record, as that will determine who NY faces in the ALDS. Verlander worries me, that's for sure, but Texas worries me too.
  12. Life and How to Live It Those early IRS records are transcendental pop--the band had a mystical power back then (here's something I wrote about when they came to town to record LIFES RICH PAGEANT). They were so, so much better than the absolute crapola top-40 radio (with a few exceptions) of the early/mid-1980s... somebody really needs to write a book about the American post-punk 1980-85 indie-pop underground (OUR BAND COULD BE YOUR LIFE ain't it, IMHO) that R.E.M. came out of. They had their share of less-than-stellar moments after DOCUMENT, but AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE has worn well, and ACCELERATE is a late-period masterpiece. (I also think MONSTER, considered roundly disappointing when it came out, is an underrated album, their one foray into quasi-glam/pressures-of-fame territory.) But the records I still love best are those IRS ones... CHRONIC TOWN, MURMUR, RECKONING, FABLES, etc.
  13. The Yankees just clinched the AL East--still can't quite believe it (given how incredibly strong Boston looked going into this season), and they did it with a pinch-hit single from Jorge Posada. It's been a great year, whatever ends up happening in the playoffs (and I still think the back end of any NY postseason rotation is going to leave them seriously vulnerable). Berigan--what's up with the Braves? Any chance St. Louis is going to overtake them?
  14. I do not care for Mr. Jame Shields, sir... I do not.
  15. Lloyd also seems to have done a vast bulk of the writing for the band.
  16. This past week's Night Lights show, devoted to drummer Chico Hamilton's early and mid-1960s recordings, is now up for online listening: A Different Journey: Chico Hamilton In The 1960s ...and a happy birthday to Mr. Hamilton, who turns 90 today.
  17. BTW, for any Boston fan or foe who's ready to bury the Red Sox, I have just five words: the 2000 New York Yankees. They lost 15 of their last 18 regular-season games and still went on to win the World Series. If Bedard and Buchholz both make it back (and Bedard's return is imminent while Buchholz's is still very much up in the air), Boston will have a very good starting rotation for the playoffs.
  18. I was following the game online and had the exact same reaction as the NY home crowd in the bottom of the 8th: More clips from the end of the game: Must C Classic: Mo's 602nd save (I love the WADO call of the final out in this one! Also Jeter's expression as he goes towards the mound to congratulate Mo.) Rivera speaks after #602 Whatever happens in the postseason, it's been a great year simply to see Jeter's 3000th hit and now this... I only wish Andy Pettitte had been there as well.
  19. Tip of the Yankee cap to Mo Rivera, who just broke the all-time record for most saves by a reliever. A class act and quite possibly the greatest closer ever... it's been a privilege and a pleasure to watch him pitch for the past 16 years. For me he's right up there with Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio in the Yankee pantheon of legends. Mo gets save #602
  20. I'll eat to that! When I was a little kid, McDonald's in Indiana offered free cheeseburgers if the IU basketball team held its opponent to 50 points or less. This was during the 1975-76 season, when the team went undefeated and had a stellar defense... many free cheeseburgers were consumed! Not quite the grand deal the Texas carpet man is offering, but it added an extra layer of fun to watching the games. Re: "Carpet Man" song... doesn't the beginning sound to you like Mr. Webb had been listening to Mr. Diamond circa 1966? ("Cherry Cherry," "Kentucky Woman," etc.)
  21. Belle and Sebastian, "I Love My Car".
  22. I dunno, but sooner or later this dude needs to factor into the conversation!
  23. Good thing the Yankees have been doing well without A-Rod in the lineup, because his thumb injury won't likely heal completely any time soon.
  24. BTW, question: have any recordings of either Gil Evans' Friday-night performance or his Sunday-afternoon finale set at Monterey '66 ever circulated? Two contemporary reports indicate that there were problems with the sound-system on Friday night, but I'd still love to hear anything that's out there... the searches I did failed to turn up anything. A live Evans ensemble performance in those days was evidently a rare thing.
  25. Nice article in the NY Times today about Mo Rivera as team leader, mentor and booster.
