  1. I just pulled out the Andrew Hill Blue Note 1963-66 set for some late-night listening and in so doing realized that it's the first Mosaic set I ever got--way back in late 1995, not long after it was released. My friend Sascha had hipped me to the label during a conversation at the record store where I worked at the time, and the Hill set hooked me right away (when I bought it, the only CD I had of his was JUDGMENT). What was your first Mosaic set?
  2. Fascinating...thanks for posting that, Larry. DJA's post is sending me back to the EARLY ELLINGTON set today.
  3. The comedy of errors changed casts last night. The Cards' Game 1 infield pop-up "you got it, right?... I don't got it" miscue reminded me of a similar Angels mishap in Game 1 of the 2009 ALCS: http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=7060605&game_pk=263167
  4. Here's a recent, new Night Lights program devoted to the recordings that Stan Getz made in the last several years of his life: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/late-autumn-stan-getz-198791/ Wish I'd had enough time to work in a track from the album he did with Helen Merrill as well...
  5. Happy birthday, my friend!
  6. We recently re-aired "Portrait of Little Jazz," and it remains archived for online listening: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/portrait-jazz-roy-eldridge/

  12. Two brick-and-mortar storefronts: Luna Music in Indianapolis at 52nd and College, and Landlocked Music in Bloomington at 6th and Walnut. I also prowl the used sections of a couple of other stores in both cities. I also buy online, almost always through Amazon.
  13. Up for broadcast and taking jazz requests at 812-855-2087 or johnsond@indiana.edu.
  14. Hey all, just wanted to hip you to fellow board member David Weiss' fine new release, Endangered Species: The Music of Wayne Shorter. It was recorded live at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and features quite a few front-line players, including Geri Allen on piano, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Ravi Coltrane on tenor sax and Steve Davis on trombone: http://www.amazon.com/Endangered-Species-Music-Wayne-Shorter/dp/B00D2QBMHY/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1380730770&sr=1-1&keywords=david+weiss+endangered
  15. I'll be featuring some music from David Weiss's new tribute to Wayne Shorter, Endangered Species, on Just You and Me this afternoon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. EST. It's "Live And By Request" day on the show, so if any Organissimo posters want to phone in a request around that time, just give me a call at 812-855-2087, and I'll see if I can get it on the air. (Between the CDs and the vinyl, we have a pretty good library here.) Link to listen online is here: http://indianapublicmedia.org/radio/ I'll up the thread right before broadcast. Here's the playlist for yesterday's show: http://indianapublicmedia.org/justyouandme/2013-10-01/ The format for the show is new music on Monday, classic jazz on Tuesday, live recordings and jazz requests on Wednesday, and Indiana jazz (past and present) on Thursday.
  16. Beautiful moment when Joe Girardi sent Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte out to remove Mo Rivera from his final game: http://wapc.mlb.com/nyy/play/?content_id=30965689&topic_id=vtp_best_moments&game_pk=undefined Three future Hall of Famers right there, and three of the best who ever put on a Yankee uniform. Thanks, guys... 18 years went by all too quickly.

  23. Just finished listening to Coltrane's FEARLESS LEADER and now on disc 5 of Artie Shaw's SELF-PORTRAIT (great overview of his career, if you can still find it for a reasonable price).
