  1. If I had to pick a favorite to win the World Series right now, I'd probably go with the Phillies.
  2. In addition to all of the excellent suggestions above: Art Blakey/James Moody, NEW SOUNDS Howard McGhee, TRUMPET AT TEMPO Thelonious Monk, GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC (V. 1 and 2) Bud Powell, MAD BEBOP (some overlap with Dexter G. SETTIN' THE PACE) Bud Powell, AMAZING BUD POWELL V. 1 (some overlap with Dameron/Navarro, iirc) J.J. Johnson, ORIGINS: SAVOY SESSIONS Illinois Jacquet, anything from the Mosaic box (such as Chuck's Apollo rec) Dexter Gordon, COMPLETE DIAL SESSIONS Dizzy Gillespie/Sonny Berman/Fats Navarro, COMPLETE DIAL MASTERS: MODERN JAZZ TRUMPETS Allen Eager, ACE FACE Brew Moore, THE KEROUAC CONNECTION I know what you mean about this period/style, colinmce; I have a similar love for it. Thanks for starting the topic.
  3. Danny? Yeah, he seems to have vanished. If the agency somehow finds a way to hang on without Lucky Strike, any chance we'll see Sal back in some capacity? Also wondering if anybody else is going to die this year--we've had Anna Draper and Miss Blankenship so far. I had a feeling the Korea issue was going to come back on Don this year; the war's alluded to in the opening scene of the Season 4 debut (the reporter with the artificial leg who's interviewing Don). Quite a turnaround, that he had to depend on Pete Campbell taking a big fall for him to keep things from getting any worse.
  4. They have been, at least on the 2000 DVD release that I have. My wife prefers the earlier version, while I still like the second better (although the deleted scene from the earlier version with Bogart in the prosecutor's/DA's office is a pleasure to watch). The backstory on why the earlier version was shelved is interesting. Bacall had, as Larry notes, turned in an excellent, star-making performance in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Her followup movie, however--CONFIDENTIAL AGENT, based on a lesser-known Graham Greene novel--was a bomb (I've never seen it, but reports are that Bacall and co-star Charles Boyer did not strike any sparks together onscreen). There was a lot of concern about whether or not Bacall's career was finished, and so some of THE BIG SLEEP's sexier scenes--particularly the "depends on who's in the saddle" conversation in the bar--were added, with the (ultimately successful) goal of burnishing her cinematic image.
  5. Same two I would've suggested for starters--here's a brief write-up I did for the Night Lights site several years ago on The Big Steal.
  6. Well, they decided to try to help today for a change , though I think it'll take a miracle for NY to somehow pull out the division at this point (especially since our fold in the last two games against Tampa Bay gave them the season head-to-head edge at 10-8, meaning that a W-L tie will go to them). Hell, at this point NY is just trying to make the playoffs, after getting knocked around by the Bosox Friday and Saturday. They've even switched starters for tonight and put Hughes on the mound (though Hughes at home is generally worse than Hughes on the road). The Yankees look like they're far from being in fighting trim for the postseason at this point...only advantage of the wild-card would be that the Rays, instead of us, would have to face Cliff Lee and Texas in a 5-game series. Again, the 2009 mojo seems to be missing from this year's edition. Pinstripe Alley posters console themselves with thoughts of 2000 (when NY dropped 15 of its final 18 but still went on to win the World Series), but to me it's looking more like 2005 or 2007.
  7. Anybody else heard this one yet or considered picking it up? I just saw it down at Landlocked Music here in Bloomington: I Plan to Stay a Believer: The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield
  8. TTK, generally you need RealPlayer, but see this thread for possible workarounds. Apologies to any who tried to access the show today and couldn't make a connection. One of our old A Moment of Science episodes got voted up onto Reddit.com's top page, and our server crashed from the overwhelming amount of traffic that was generated. You should be able to get to the program page now.
  9. Wow... Kinescope of complete 1960 World Series Game 7 found in Bing Crosby's wine cellar
  10. Alex W. Rodriguez' review. Larry, he makes the same point re: Grofe. Not the first time WM has been linked (directly or indirectly) to Paul Whiteman.
  11. This past week's Night Lights show, Goin' Up: Space Age Jazz is now archived for online listening. In addition to the above listed, music from Gil Melle, Curtis Counce, Earl Bostic, Russ Garcia, Mel Torme, and Frank Comstock, as well as some space sounds and news flashes. Special thanks to board members Teasing the Korean, Medjuck, and jazztrain.
  12. The New Thing, right? Night Lights comes on after it at 10 out there. BillF, thanks for listening to the Monterey show. I'm going to do more that highlight other years from the festival going forward.
  13. The Prestige compilation AT LARGE (covering some of Willis' early-1960s albums and one 1968 LP) is currently selling through Newbury for $2.99 plus Ye Olde $3 shipping charge: At Large for $2.99
  14. Nice, prominent mention for Allen Lowe. Thanks for posting this, Randy.
  15. Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels--that might be the best Big Three of any team that's bound for the playoffs this year.
  16. ...could ya lend me a few shillings?
  17. The Thad Jones Blue Note/United Artists/Roulette. Been a long time since I had this one out, but lots of great writing by Thad and lots of Billy Mitchell, not to mention Barry Harris and Tommy Flanagan.
  18. I haven't heard the entire Holiday performance from that festival, but I agree with you, Medjuck. Does the Concord/MJF label have plans to release more music from the Monterey vaults?
  19. VOA jazz DJ Willis Conover's pen pal! (True story.)
  20. The book is out: I've been listening to FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET again this past week--man, what an event that was when it came out in 1990. That and NATION OF MILLIONS still sound pretty amazing to me whenever I throw them on.
  21. ESPN polled 24 MLB managers and found heavy support for expanded replay--18 wanted it, two didn't, and four didn't want to comment.
  22. This, in advance of this week's "Goin' Up: Space Age Jazz" Night Lights show: A fascinating book so far.
  23. Chuck, do you have a general target date yet for when the Roscoe quartet and the Braxton/McDonough will be available for ordering?
  24. Well, gents, it's finally up, fwiw: He, Too, Was America: Duke Ellington's Sepia Panorama Tranemonk, I had the same reaction as you re: Strayhorn when I read the book last summer.
  25. Kearns struck out 7 times in the past two games against the Rays. His K in the top of the 4th with runners on first and third and only one out was particularly galling, a very bad AB that failed (as the Yanks have done so often lately) to get a runner in by making some sort of contact. Without Swisher and Gardner, though, Joe Girardi's OF options have been very limited lately. I do think I'd have to bet on the Rays winning the division now--our schedule being what it is, I'd hoped we'd come out of the Texas and Tampa series holding a two-game lead over the Rays, but we have no wiggle room left now. Earlier in the year the games with the Orioles looked like they'd give us a breather, but no more, now that they've morphed into the Fightin' Showalters.
