  1. Select Wallington, Dorham, Blakey, Mingus, Tristano tracks.....plus ?? No Tristano, but everybody else you mention, plus Miles/Trane and Randy Weston. If I'd had more room in the show and more time to put it together, I would've tried to run down airshots of Oscar Pettiford, since he was pretty much the house band there for awhile.
  2. A happy 70th birthday to Mr. McPherson--I devoted this week's Night Lights program to him by way of tribute, focusing primarily on his 1960s and early 70s recordings (including one side with Charles Mingus--the other strong influence in McPherson's music, in addition to Charlie Parker): Charles McPherson's Post-Bird Bop
  3. In honor of Charles McPherson's 70th birthday today, here's this week's Night Lights program, devoted to his 1960s and early-1970s recordings (including one side with Mingus): Charles McPherson's Post-Bird Bop Next week: "Live at Cafe Bohemia."
  4. My friend and colleague Daniel Robison, a WFIU news staffer, got a piece on All Things Considered's national newscast. It deals with an ongoing archaeological dig in the Indiana Avenue area: Dig Finds a Thriving Cultural Mecca in Indianapolis
  5. ...and eligible once again to win a World Series, now that a Democrat's in the White House--my pet weird theory! From 1960 on: NY Yankees in World Series with a Republican in office: 0-5 NY Yankees in World Series with a Democrat in office: 8-2 (and 6-0 from 1977 on)
  6. Video of the Beatles lip-syncing to "We Can Work It Out" circa 1966--Lennon goofily playful at the beginning. Their coolest-looking period, IMO--and the music ain't bad, either: We Can Work It Out
  7. Good to see you again, sir--stick around this time! Source for another kind of "cutting contest"...
  8. Thanks much to JohnS, Aggie87, and everybody else who sent notes my way...much appreciation.
  9. Best wishes to you, sir!
  10. Whatever happens with the Yanks this year, I think this has been the most fun team to watch since the 1996-2001 glory days... they finally seem to have some chemistry again. Watching Matsui do the helmet-flip last night after his walk-off home run (the 9th time they've won on a walk-off, already equaling last year's total...of course, some of that due, no doubt, to the new "Air Yankee" stadium effect), I thought, "Man, they actually look like they're having fun out there." Not just the normal end-of-game jubilation, but a sense that they're actually a team, and not just a bunch of guys that the Boss paid to play.
  11. If anybody has the Evidence cd COLOSSAL SAXOPHONE SESSIONS, could he or she drop me a PM? I'm looking for the lead-off track--Lee Konitz and John Zorn playing Wayne Shorter's "Devil's Island." Many thanks! EDIT: track located, much appreciation. Does anybody happen to have a copy of the original Zorn CD of NEWS FOR LULU? I've got last year's reissue but am trying to get a hold of the liner notes that Zorn wrote for the first edition.
  12. Not a guy, but I like Norah Jones' version. I think Dee Dee Bridgewater recorded one, but I haven't heard it.
  13. Per Chas' prior comment: Brew Moore: the Kerouac Connection Picked this one up in Indpls this afternoon at Luna Music on Massachusetts Avenue. Don't know if it's "complete" early Brew, but it does gather some of the Savoy sides + a fair # of appearances with Machito. It's Volume 2 in Giant Steps/Cherry Red's "Gray Boys" series (Allen Eager was V. 1):
  14. Seems like there might have been a better way to handle this--pretty hamfisted and ironic indeed.
  15. Phil Hughes looking good as the Yanks' set-up man.
  16. We're re-airing A Few Words About Jazz this weekend, but it's already archived for online listening.
  17. The version I saw was the 1970s one--ironically enough, the one episode I remember distinctly is the Alamo...and it's the one on YouTube! (Intro/outro only, unfortunately). EDIT: I now also remember the Amelia Earhart episode to which one of the YouTube commenters alludes.
  18. Yes! Also... Cronkite calls the moon landing
  19. Up for the next couple of days--we'll be tabulating the results on Monday. Thanks much to all who've responded so far.
  20. Working on the annual Afterglow autumn-songs show right now, and finding Dave Brubeck's version of "September Song" (from the 2007 CD INDIAN SUMMER) very moving, invested with a measured poignancy.
  21. Very good booklet. I'd say that all of the anthologies that Fantasy put out in the 1990s are worth picking up, if you can find them at affordable prices...here's a brief write-up I did on the West Coast jazz set.
  22. No, I wouldn't spend $40.00 on it. Buy it from a marketplace seller on Amazon.com. Newbury Comics is selling a new one there for $15.99 as of this posting. Agreed--got mine through Newbury a couple of months ago for that price & it was definitely worth it.
  23. Didn't realize till today that it's Jimmy Smith who plays the organ solo on "Bad."
  24. Bill, really sorry to hear this--I know you're a devoted fan of that show. This is Bill Barton's station, isn't it?
