Just recently picked up Hep's COUNT BASIE--THE JUBILEE ALTERNATIVES, which I can enthusiastically recommend for fans of WWII-era Basie band (half the cuts include Prez during his late-war, pre-induction stint with the band; also a couple of cuts with Thelma Carpenter, a vocalist I like).

I hear he shot J.R. too.

Those with a deep, abiding interest in FH should check out Jeffrey Magee's THE UNCROWNED KING OF SWING. There's also the revered Walter Allen bio-discography, though I've never been fortunate enough to come across a copy (for purchase, anyway). Of course, those with a deep, abiding interest probably already have--but just in case you haven't...

I'd check with Mosaic first--iirc the Herman Capitol went OOP just a couple of years ago, so there's a decent chance that Mosaic still has some booklets lying around.

Ironically enough, I just went over to David Baker's office to drop off some things, and in the midst of talking about how Freddie Hubbard was doing, David mentioned how athletic FH had been when younger. "I was going down Broadway with him after he finished that INTERPLAY date with Bill Evans and Philly Joe, and he handed me everything in his pockets and started walking down the street on his hands!" David said. I told him there was an active thread about that album here and that I'd have to pass along the anecdote.

Anyways, my show occupies some low-value radio real estate here on the home station...11 p.m. EST Saturday evenings. There isn't much that's going to pre-empt that!

I mentioned our thread discussion here to Jason Nickey, who runs Landlocked, and he laughed and said, "Well, just tell him that I've sold 5 copies of NONAAH so far!" And it is true (sadly) that Jason's store is probably the only one in south-central Indiana stocking NONAAH, as well as other cool jazz titles like the ESP reissues (the Don Cherry release is visible on the front riser in the top picture).

Handy recorded three albums for Roulette - Quote , Unquote is a reissue . Which might make a Select problematic, unless there's a batch of previously-unissued material they could include...otherwise you're putting 3 LPs on 3 CDs. I mean, it could be done, but most of the Selects seem to incorporate at least 4-5 LPs.
