Cliff, I think Marc Myers over at Jazzwax is of the same mind as you on this one.

What cracks me up are the stories about professional/biz folks tweeting really unflattering, negative things: What are you doing? What are you doing right now?

But Dan, on the strength of last night's performance he lowered his ERA to 25.00!

Only want to add that I love this place--I mean, really love it--and have developed a fairly deep/profound admiration, respect, and affection for a large number of folks here. And while Larry, Jsngry, and Chuck certainly don't need me to defend them, they are all exceptionally decent people and have contributed invaluable reflections, speculations, remembrances and thoughts to this board. (Plus they're plenty tough and abhor the scent of b.s., in the morning and pretty much any other time of day or night.) I, too, get bummed when members decide they need to leave, either temporarily or permanently, but at a certain point BFD, it's not a sign of board apocalypse and you can still stay in touch with them quite easily in the age of e-mail/Facebook/etc.

I ordered the set on Tuesday (aware of the error mentioned here) and got it last night, so evidently they were still shipping them out earlier in the week. I'll probably call just to make sure that I'm on the list for getting a corrected disc 1--but that aside, this set is a joy, with Dan Morgenstern's notes certainly contributing in that regard.

I love this board, but the Getz thread--what it turned into, at any rate--was the first one that ever actually sickened me and made me feel ashamed of this place. Y'know, that's one strike out of however many thousands of threads we've had, and this board is so, so much better than any other jazz discussion forum out there, and polices itself pretty well most of the time. Life's full of unpleasantness and unpleasant stories, gotta be adult if you want the frank, open conversations, but there was something about that Getz thread that was just utterly repulsive. As a board member I'd probably vote to let it stand, but as a personally invested moderator who runs this place, I'd not want it associated with me or my band. That said, I'd really hate to see the board come crashing down over an out-of-control topic...for a sense of proportion, just look at ALL of the active threads on any given day here. Hate to see so much focus on the handful that have gone over the line. That's my piece and I'd much prefer to move on as well.

Great date! Ordered this after the thread hipped me to it and have already listened to it twice in the past few hours.

His centennial's coming up at the end of the month. I've got a Night Lights show in the pipeline that covers his foray into bop (1948-49)...lots of Wardell Gray in that one!

Yeah, just heard about this from David Baker a couple of hours ago. Very sad news, even if not entirely unexpected. Almost all of the Indiana Avenue guys from the 1940s/50s are gone now.

I was really skeptical about this project when I first heard of it, but everybody's glowing notices have gotten me intrigued--will probably go see it this weekend. On another note, is anybody aware of any recordings that Nichelle Nichols (original Uhura) might have made w/Ellington during her time with him in the 1950s? I don't think there are any studio sides, but a programmer friend of mine was looking for something...I figure his best chance is to find an airshot somewhere.

Now listening, David. I think the songbook format is a great basis for shows. Have you done a John Coltrane songbook? Everything from Shepp to big bands ... It's already on tap for September, Bill--will air around the time of JC's birthday. Great minds think alike, eh?

Saw it in Chicago with Henry Grimes, Margaret, Roy Campbell and Chad Taylor. Michael Wiess was in town as well and stopped in. It was pretty cool. m Sounds like it--especially with that crowd!

It features recordings of Coleman's music by Art Pepper, Bill Dixon and Archie Shepp, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jack Wilson, Pee Wee Russell, the New York Contemporary Five, and John Coltrane. Next week: "Young Wynton: Early Marsalis."

Yep--plus the new stadium bites IMO.
