  1. Is the Mosaic still available? If so, get it! Possibly the last great from the Swing Era still with us.
  2. Probably astonished to find himself fielding intelligent questions for a change!
  3. agree. I enjoy this collection quite a lot. Easy to find-ebay, half, etc. Yep--got this for the proverbial song from BMG a couple of years back. Very nice collection & intro to Pass' Pablo work.
  4. May many rare platters find their way into your hands during the coming year.
  5. It was probably an IU number (the 856 prefix)... you never know around these parts--it may have been picked up by a Sun Ra fan/office worker. Or, quite possibly, by a mystified university bureaucrat. ("John Gilmore: a Quiet Screamer From Mississippi"??) I skimmed through it and it will be very useful for the show--thanks again, Chuck. It's the longest piece on Gilmore that I've come across, and it looks like Swzed drew on it for his Ra book. I'm going to the School of Music library later today to check on a December '73 Downbeat article.
  6. Randy, completely agree with you... in fact I think I posted some similar thoughts a couple months back in this thread. (In regards to Yankee fans booing Rodriguez.) I mean, I can understand how Bosox fans used to boo Ted Williams--he openly cultivated an antagonistic relationship with them. But to boo some poor sap because he's unable to perform at expected levels? (OK, rich sap, but still, when he's playing for the team you're backing...) Ridiculous--they should find another form of therapy.
  7. Clifford--Mr. Nessa was able to send me a copy. Many thanks, Chuck.
  8. Best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery, from the Hoosier to the Buckeye.
  9. I have only the Nessa AIR TIME and have been hunting for a couple of the above titles for awhile... thanks for the tip!
  10. I certainly hope it is false, but given what he's been battling, it's news (if true) that I've been fearing. I was just listening to ANDREW! a little while ago... best wishes for recovery, AH.
  11. I still think A-Rod, if he stays healthy, will pass whatever new mark Bonds sets... and btw, I finally believe the Yanks are indeed going to win the AL East (sigh of relief):
  12. His father had been ill for some time. I wonder if his death, despite the grief it provoked in Tiger, also released him from ongoing anxiety and provided some closure.
  13. Thanks everyone! Today, I am the same age as Jack Benny. 39! "Your jazz CD collection or your life.... well???" "I'm thinking." Hope it's been a great one, Jim.
  14. Hope it's been a great one and that we'll see you again soon.
  15. I just came across that passage today. The speaker is James Jacson, describing the very first Sun Ra rehearsal that he ever attended: Afterwards Sun Ra told Jacson he was punishing the drummer for not leaving "Sweet Lucy" alone--a reference Jacson first took to mean women, but later learned actually meant wine.
  16. Does anybody have a copy of Valerie Wilmer's piece on John Gilmore in the July 1985 Wire (issue #17)? And if so, is it possible to scan or somehow post it here? Unfortunately, the IU School of Music library doesn't appear to carry that periodical, and I don't believe it's been anthologized anywhere.
  17. Up for one last push--thanks esp. to one Organissimo member's generous contribution, we're only about $75 short of our goal... which is three $25 pledges, or five $15 ones... so close! The donation tab will stay up, so folks can contribute any time that they like.... but it would be a tremendous boost for Night Lights to make this goal by midnight tonight. Happy Labor Day, and many thanks again to all past, present, and future supporters of the show.
  18. This week on Night Lights it's "I Want to Live!" Based on the true story of accused murderess Barbara Graham, this 1958 movie employed a jazz soundtrack written by Johnny Mandel and performed by such jazz stalwarts as Gerry Mulligan, Bud Shank and Art Farmer (who appeared in the movie's opening scenes), along with Frank Rosolino, Jack Sheldon, and Shelly Manne. Susan Hayward (who met a grisly demise in many of her films from the 1940s and 1950s) played Graham, a woman with a troubled past and a real-life jazz and Gerry Mulligan fan who was eventually executed in 1955, despite her protestations of innocence. (Debate continues today over whether or not she actually committed the murder for which she was convicted.) Hayward won an Academy Award for her performance in the movie, which was directed by Hoosier native Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, West Side Story, The Haunting, The Sound of Music) We'll hear music from both versions of the soundtrack that were released, as well as more background on the story behind Barbara Graham and the making of the movie. "I Want to Live!" airs Saturday, September 2 at 11:05 p.m. EST on WFIU and at 10 p.m. Central Time on WNIN-Evansville. It also airs Sunday evening at 10 p.m. EST on Blue Lake Public Radio in Michigan. The program will be posted Tuesday afternoon in the Night Lights archives. Next week: "Norman Granz's Jazz Scene."
  19. This week on Afterglow it’s “Sarah Vaughan: Live in Japan.” This often-overlooked concert album from 1973 finds the singer’s voice in prime form and her spirit in a playful mood as she nears age 50, gliding through standards such as “The Nearness of You,” “I Remember You,” and “Bye Bye Blackbird.” We’ll also hear music from June Christy, Mark Murphy, Sonny Rollins, Earl Hines, Ella Fitzgerald, and more. “Sarah Vaughan: Live in Japan” airs at 10 p.m. EST Friday, September 1 on WFIU and at 10 p.m. Central Time Saturday evening on WNIN-Evansville. The program will be posted Monday afternoon in the Afterglow archives. Next week: "Nat King Cole on Capitol 1955-59." Music from the new Bear Family collection STARDUST.
  20. Flintstone Winston commercials
  21. Jim, given that you're pursuing the house/jazz connection these days through Michiru & others, have you ever checked out Wax Poetics? Very good magazine devoted to funk/soul/hiphop/out jazz from the 1960s to the present... Brandon Burke is associated with it, I believe, and Brownie had some really cool photos in issue #15.
  22. I've been listening to the WBGO radio special "The House That Trane Built," and there are a couple of pronouncer questions that crop up as a result. Several of the interviewees refer to Bob Thiele as "THEEL," but the narrator says "TEAL." Then there's Ayler--I've always heard it pronounced as "EYE-ler," but a couple of people here say "AY-ler" (which perhaps, on the surface of it, makes more sense). Any definitive answers?
  23. Duke fans: NEVER NO LAMENT is in clearance for $5.97. Even with shipping, it's a pretty sweet deal... I just nabbed a copy for a friend.
