  1. Matt Wilson does a Haden composition on his new Palmetto CD. I'll confess that I haven't found Haden's recent releases particularly compelling, but perhaps I haven't listened closely enough.
  2. Yeah, I listened to "Dinner" today & thought he was copping some things from Hawk's version... it is a nice album.
  3. Is there an extensive piece on Frank Newton available anywhere? I have the Jasmine 2-CD set, and I think that's the lengthiest writing about him that I've ever come across.
  4. Matthew, wasn't Merton a Dylan fan? I seem to recall from his bio that he even wrote a poem that he hoped Dylan would set to music. Thanks for the words re: the Heylin book. I'll have to check it out sometime... Post-accident is precisely where Robert Shelton's NO DIRECTION HOME derails, IMO.
  5. After seeing the Yanks get slapped around all season by the Sox, I was just happy to see them look like the better team for once. The real showdown is going to be in the playoffs (and I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that!).
  6. Damn... I think 36 people from this board alone have already pre-ordered it! Guess I'd better pull that trigger now, huh?
  7. If you're developing a Dolphy addiction, the Prestige recordings are a good place to start. Sound is pretty decent (it's a 1995 release, although one or two of the albums within may have come out in the 20K series since then) and there's a lot of important material here, from OUT THERE & FAR CRY to the complete Five Spot recordings with Booker Little and Mal Waldron. I might differ just a bit w/B. Goren & say that it's certainly the most prolific part of his recording career, but in terms of importance, the IRON MAN/CONVERSATIONS/OUT TO LUNCH 1963-64 era might notch just a bit higher... but I still think you should get the Prestige set. B-) I'm glad I did & have been thinking about re-visiting it of late. You might also want to hunt down VINTAGE DOLPHY, the CD that came out on GM a few years back: VintageDolphy More Third-Streamish than what you'll hear on the Prestige box & well worth investigating.
  8. I cast my vote for St. Harpo. Anybody else notice the title of one of Don Byron's compositions on IVEY DIVEY? It's "Abie the Fishman," which I think has to be a reference to the scene in ANIMAL CRACKERS where Chico & Harpo unmask one of the rich society men as a former poor immigrant, "Abie the fishman" from their old neighborhood. Chico starts singing his name loudly while Harpo whistles along until they succeed in blackmailing him.
  9. I'm aware of the many boots, but weren't there plans at one time to release an "official" 3-CD SMILE box somewhat similar to the PET SOUNDS box?
  10. Impossible, yeah, I downloaded them. Send me a PM if you want... in the meantime, somebody over at SweetAddy's posted these three tracks of Elliott playing two of his songs & a George Harrison cover w/Quasi (probably from a 1998 France show): ElliottwQuasi A very rocked-out version of "Bled White," which is one of my favorite tracks off XO. (He did it when I saw him live, too.) I'm getting very psyched about Oct. 19.
  11. Hold onto that limb... you're off to a bad start today, my friend.
  12. According to the new Downbeat, the I'M ALL FOR YOU lineup is going to record a sequel.
  13. Yes indeed. Jim Sangrey's description posted elsewhere does great justice to this remarkable recording; having heard the DAT, I'll be very eager to see the booklet that Sunenblick & co. provide with the CD. Uptown always does such a great job with that.
  14. Very sad news. I all but worshipped the Ramones when I was a kid, especially Johnny, whose look I tried to cultivate in 7th grade. (Didn't go over all that well with the girls--in 1977-78 Indiana, it was the Leif Garrett/Peter Frampton style that really knocked 'em out.) Here's a longer obit from today's NY Times:
  15. Huh? Anybody else here know what bootleg this interviewer was referring to? Did it come out in the Bird's Eyes series?
  16. I think I'd better re-name that thread "The Aric Effron Suicide Watch."
  17. And get a bottle of Jack to go with it. That's one of the darkest records anybody's ever made. The epitome of Sinatra as interpretive singer, afaic. I love that record. It's the first Sinatra I ever bought & one that I frequently recommend. The bonus cut included on the CD--"Where or When"--is absolutely stunning. Those interested in hearing Sinatra with a small jazz combo might want to investigate the CD released on Blue Note a few years ago that featured him with Red Norvo's group in an Australian concert.
  18. A big weekend in the Bronx coming up for Yankee & Bosox fans: a three-game meeting between the two teams, to be followed by another tripler next week in Fenway. With 16 games to go, the Yanks are up by three and a half; could be a real nailbiter for both sides.
  19. BTW, I probably missed it somewhere in the thread, but is this set a limited edition? And if so, how many sets are being manufactured? OTOH, I may not need to worry--the CDUniverse price is so tempting that I may go ahead & order, finances be damned.
  20. Is there an estimated release date for this beauty?
  21. Yeah, there was a small ring of chemistry students here at IU a few years ago who made a killing in the stolen-bike industry with judicious applications of liquid nitrogen. The things you learn in college these days!
  22. First I've heard of this set. Sounds like a "must-have" set! Excellent news! This one's actually been on the drawing board for a long time, sort of like the Capitol Big Band box... I first saw mention of it about 5-6 years ago & wondered if it was still in the works. Hah chah!
  23. The Kenton tracks (3 of them in all, I believe) show up on one of the Bird's Eyes CDs, which may be the Philogy that Bill lists above. I have it at home & will check when I get off work.
  24. Lon, thanks much--this is good to know!
  25. No, but your spam sure is.
