It's the HIGH FIDELITY reader in me... I just made a mix CD-R for an old, ahem, "friend." Actually, I made it about a year & a half ago and never got around to sending it till two days ago, with a slight shuffling of the song order. Here it is: The La's, "Son of a Gun" The Kinks, "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?" The Yardbirds, "I Wish You Would" The Strokes, "Modern Age" Aimee Mann, "Ghost World" Oasis, "Going Nowhere" XTC, "Meeting Place" The La's, "There She Goes" Beatles, "I'm Only Sleeping" Sardina, "I'll Be Around" Go-Go's, "Turn to You" My Bloody Valentine, "Slow" Galaxie 500, "Ceremony" Mercury Rev, "I Only Have Eyes for You" Artie Shaw, "Nocturne" Psychedelic Furs, "She Is Mine" Amos Milburn, "In the Middle of the Night" Miles Davis, "Blue in Green" Norah Jones, "Don't Ask Why" Beach Boys, "God Only Knows" The La's, "Looking Glass"

Um... lemme think... oh, I remember! 1978 NY Yankees.

Yep, Bix was last year. As for box-sets, RCA already put out a complete Glenn Miller set, and I doubt they have the economic nerve to tackle Fats' considerable output... how well did the Keepnews-produced volumes sell? It seems--I say seems because it's mostly based on my anecdotal observations--that the major companies are just a bit more wary of putting out complete, large, and/or comprehensive sets these days than they were a few years ago. I do hope that the Hawk gets his due. Basie, I'm sure, will not be overlooked.

Just got my own jazz program on our NPR affiliate

Just recorded for broadcast this Saturday night at 11 p.m. on WFIU: "The Day Lady Died," a one-hour tribute to Billie Holiday on the 45th anniversary of her death. Audio clips from Lester Young (from his 1958 interview w/Chris Albertson) & Billie herself, along with a recording of Frank O'Hara reading his celebrated poem "The Day Lady Died" not long before his own death in 1966. Plus plenty of Holiday music--"This Year's Kisses," "Long Gone Blues," "No More" (moodier-sounding alternate take), "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" and others. Next week: Miles Davis w/Sam Rivers in Japan, 1964 (unreleased material that won't be on the SEVEN STEPS box) as well as Rivers' 1964 & '65 Blue Note dates w/members of Miles' quintet. -
I Love The 90's On VH-1
ghost of miles replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
(groan) It was destined to happen, but isn't this a bit premature? Has the 80's revival truly run its course? I guess I gotta be more hip to the new nostalgia... don't get caught nappin' on yesterday's fashions! -
Wow! Any confirmation on that, Chuck? I did a two-part show on BEFORE MOTOWN a couple years back, and JamesJazz sent me some wonderful material from that time... that's another Uptown I'd buy right out of the gate!

I hear ya, impossible. I've been that way myself lately, particularly with all of the outtakes and unreleased songs that have been posted on Sweet Adeline... his leftovers are so much better than most artists' primary offerings. Can't wait for SONGS FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL. BTW, some discussion of Brad Mehldau going on over at Sweet Adeline because of his cover of "Bottle Up and Explode": bottleupandexplode

Maybe it's all an insidious attempt to drive us back to buying the books.

A friend of mine who writes for AMG still says this is the first step towards a paid site... if so, not a very adroit one...

Coltrane interview
ghost of miles replied to wolff's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Yes, great line! I used it in a promo spot I did for a two-part, six-hour Coltrane special I did a couple of years ago... matter of fact, the community radio station manager and I are getting ready to re-do that program and run it again July 23 and 30. The program includes excerpts from the 1958 interview and Kofsky's 1966 interview as well, along with commentary from Carl Woideck (Coltrane biographer) and David Baker. I'll post a link when it airs. -

Mine came in the mail yesterday, and I'm hoping to listen to it tomorrow night. Didn't realize that Frank Kimbrough is on it, which is just another added bonus! -
A friend of mine sent me the following message from a horror-film message board: The later Mummy movies were none too good, but I might get 'em anyway for nostalgia's sake (I saw them all on our local late-Friday-night horror show when I was a kid). I definitely want to get the Invisible Man set.

OUT OF THE PAST coming on DVD
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The box came this week, and my wife & I watched OUT OF THE PAST last night. Man, has it held up... and did Robert Mitchum ever have a better role? Kind of like Bogart in THE MALTESE FALCON, where you just can't imagine anybody else in that part after you see it. Looking forward to watching everything else in the noir set over the coming weeks... late summer is a great time to watch such flicks IMO. Still hoping that THE BIG STEAL surfaces eventually on DVD as well. -
Re-reading David Halberstam's SUMMER OF '49, a wonderful baseball book about the Yankees-Red Sox pennant race that year.

A Jazz Crusaders Mosaic!!!

Is THE LAST SET material that's different from TRIO? I was under the impression that TRIO contained all of the work that Twardzik had recorded for PJ as a leader. -
I missed the start of the NPR story, and I had a feeling this might be why they were talking about him: Bill Randle dies
-
All Things Considered is running a feature right now on a DJ named Bill Randle, who was the first to feature Elvis on a national TV show (not Ed Sullivan, as many believe), among other accomplishments. Article on Randle here; I'll post a link to the NPR story as soon as it appears on the website.

Tonight on "Night Lights," it's singer Jackie Paris... the first performer to ever record a vocal version of "Round Midnight," a sometime collaborator with Charles Mingus, and a generally underappreciated, overlooked artist even among aficionados. I'll be playing the above-mentioned tracks along with selections from his Brunswick LP SKYLARK and his Impulse album THE SONG IS PARIS. On WFIU tonight around 11:10 (9:10 on the West Coast, 12:10 on the East). -
