Damn. I overlooked this. Is there still time to get in on a download?

You'd think someone in New Orleans would take the time to identify and list these structures so that they could be checked before demolition permits were issued. The WashPost article references the Buddy Bolden house. I think it's still standing. Jeff did a virtual walking tour of New Orleans a while back using Google's street view and showed the Bolden house still standing.

The Five Albums That Changed the Way You Hear Music
papsrus replied to md655321's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Awright. As best I can recollect: 1. Hendrix -- Are You Experienced. Spun endlessly on the giant, old, record player in my parents' basement back in the day. The music was dark and beckoning for a young lad just entering his teens. Long since vanished from my radar. Doubt I'd find it anything more than nostalgic today. 2. Grateful Dead -- Europe 72. My first encounter with the Dead, extended jams and all that. Probably played a role in opening up my ears to music that reached beyond the formulaic. 3. Some John Lee Hooker album I couldn't begin to recall the title of. Probably mid- or late- 70s. Had never heard anything like this before in my life. A complete turn-off to my music-listening buddies, who found it unlistenable, uncomfortable. But something hard and rough and real in it was planted in me that didn't really come to fruition until much later. I didn't go out and snap up John Lee Hooker albums, but the appeal for the rawness of it definitely stuck. 4. Rolling Stones -- Exile on Main Street. Still regard it as my favorite Stones album, and for me their masterpiece. 5. Coltrane -- One Down, One Up, Live at the Half Note. A revelation. Sparked a renewed interest in music -- which had been dormant for some time -- and really raised the curtain for me on so-called free jazz. -
Ah! Rumbled! OK, I'll own up. It was 1885. Archve field recordings of stirring tunes sung in the Paris Commune 14 years before. I have a couple of copies of that as well, including the limited edition Japanese reissue with bonus tracks and original cover photograph by Louis Ducos du Hauron. Far from my earliest, though.

Stanford looked unbeatable last night. Polished, efficient. I can see why their QB Andrew Luck is projected as the top pick in the draft, if he leaves college. Stanford's only loss was to Oregon. Auburn is going to have their hands full against the Ducks.

I have no idea. Still trying to figure out which 5 albums changed the way I listened. ... I think you guys are making this all up and I'm just not in on the joke.

Wonderful photos. Thanks! -
Allen, (and others interested in self-publishing) you may find this articleof interest: (Thinking of an unrelated thread on the economy: this trend, if that's what it is, would seem to be bad for book publishers and paper mills, but good for writers and purveyors of digital media. ... and probably bad for Walmart.)

I've always thought the discs on the few Mosaic sets I have appeared/felt quite thin (and thus more easily snapped when stuck?). Don't have this set yet, but I'll be cautious removing the discs when I do.

2010 jazz critics top 50 releases
papsrus replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The individual ballots list top 10s, which might be more helpful. I don't fault the Voice for using the ballots to assemble a top 50, but you're right to point out it comes off as a bit inflated. I don't believe I've listened to a single new release this year. But I suspect Larry Kart's 10 choices would likely offer me a better guide to selected releases than the Top 50 Voice list. -
Where are we at here? Big Ten tanks on New Year's Day, with the SEC going 3-0 against them. I didn't think TCU had a shot against Wisconsin. Hm. ... Wisconsin DBs lined up 10 yards off of the TCU wideouts all day long, and TCU took advantage of it. Curious strategy. I would have thought the Badgers would make an adjustment there at halftime. Nope. Most intense game I've seen so far was the FSU-South Carolina tilt New Year's Eve. Both teams were absolutely flying at each other -- a car wreck on just about every play. Weis to Florida as offensive coordinator. What's next? Belichick as defensive coordinator? State of Fla. had six bowl teams this year and they came out of it 5-1.

Nice interview. I found it fascinating when Chuck talked about all the hours and precision work he put in inserting silence, of all things, into recordings in order to eliminate the ghosting effect of tapes. No small amount of irony there, but also a nice little peek into the nuts and bolts of things. Edit for typo

The Incredible True Story of the Collar Bomb Heist
papsrus replied to Chalupa's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Fascinating, creepy. Didn't recall this story at all, although I'm sure it must have gotten tons of ink. -
Very righteous of Carlson to take such a principled stand.

Every time I see this thread title I read it as "half engaged," upon which I immediately feel equal parts envy and pity.

Valuable list. Thank you.

WTF? Why was the "Elvis Thread" locked?
papsrus replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Forums Discussion
From my point of view, your intentions are good and you have without question a difficult task, but there has to be some weight given to the interest a particular thread is generating. Weight should also be given to the individual writing styles of the participants. The comment you deemed offensive I found more curious than distasteful. Even Moms' more direct comments in the Elvis thread have to be taken with a grain of salt. Shaking people up is a good thing sometimes, yes? Passion as well, a good thing. Ultimately, I think that the inclination to lock any thread should always be weighed against the benefit of allowing the discussion to run its course. Anyways, I don't mean to pile on. As I said, you have a difficult task and no decision is going to find perfect agreement. I appreciate your largely even-handed efforts and hope you'll continue on. -
Maybe for you. I find it fascinating.

I think the Rays lowered ticket prices a few years ago, and had free parking for an entire season when Sternberg first took over. And the Yankees, of all clubs, lowered the sky-high prices on those seats around home plate last season. Still super expensive, but they did lower the prices. ... Never say never.

Not taking time off. Actually working an extra day this week due to others taking time off. Second year in a row I'll have worked on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve AND New Year's Day. (And for those who recall, I was just coming off the Injured Reserve list heading into the holidays last year. Oh woe is me. ... quite happy to have a job I love, though. Otherwise I might complain.

They were saying a couple of hours ago there were already ... I forget how many -- but a lot of wrecks on the highways around Philly. I think it was probably the right call to keep people off the streets, although I do love to watch snow games. (as long as it's from the comfort of my home on TV :blush2: )
