  1. On order: Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble Old/Quartet Sessions Matt Perrine -- Sunflower City
  2. Potential buyers: A cash-rich company with an interest in digital media? Microsoft buys EMI and folds it into their struggling Zune franchise?
  3. I think you may have misplaced the decimal there. 25 times is probably more like it, especially if the Packers win and Rodgers has a big day.
  4. The NY Times article somewhat vaguely implicates piracy, and to a lesser and more vague degree streaming services, for a drop in music sales. Piracy is one thing. Streaming, on the other hand, is just part of a new distribution model, isn't it? The article also doesn't give much weight -- if any -- to that little thing called the Great Recession and its possible impact on music sales. But never mind that. This article from Wired in 2004 is obviously a bit dated, but still offers some insight into the staggering success of certain entertainment distribution models. I think this captures the main thrust of things fairly well: Food for thought.
  5. "Jobs commands Apple with the discipline and improvisational confidence of John Coltrane. It's not clear who else, if anyone, at the company can groove with equal flair." Jobs is brilliant, but the article hints at how his hyper-control over Apple product development, marketing and business partnerships may have actually held the company back. The reluctance to strike a deal with Verizon for the iPhone until just recently, for instance, certainly held back the sales of that product. Or the whole 'closed' approach to the Mac operating system and how that ceded a gigantic chunk of the software market to Microsoft. Interesting article.
  6. Miles baby, just look at us. I'm never changing this groovy 'do. Ever. You shouldn't either, my man. Cool?
  7. Definitely going to track down the Perrin disc. Loved that track. A lot of really nice music here Jeff. Plan on going back and giving it all a few re-listens with your comments. Thanks.
  8. Very nice, clean, easy to navigate. Sound samples are wonderful (and beefy!). ... Well done.
  9. Didn't watch but a minute or two at the end of the game. They might as well make it flag football, which ain't a bad idea, actually. They could also have the captains choose up sides the night before, as the NHL did. That was kinda cool. And mic the huddles (maybe they did that, didn't watch enough to know). They could even outfit the helmets with two-way communications so the broadcasters could talk to the players while they're on the field. They could go completely interactive and ask for the viewing audience to submit play suggestions during the game. Do quick vote things online such as: Team A is going back on offense. On the opening play, should they A) go deep on a flee flicker post play? B) Run a hook and lateral to Welker? C) Statue of Liberty play? D) Screen pass? Do a quick vote online and bingo, you've got the viewers calling the plays. Advertisers would eat that shit up, I'm guessing. Instant promotions for those who voted online for the winning play calls, etc, etc. Stuff like that would get the viewers more into it, and make the game more interesting to watch. But they really ought to just go with flag rules or something similar if they aren't going to tackle. A flag on each side of the waste and both flags have to be pulled off to register a tackle. Something like that.
  10. Mark is Moose. Or rather, Jazzmoose is Mark. I think you'll find many members here, Dan among them, who are devoted animal lovers, including some who've been involved with volunteering, animal rescue and care for special needs animals. So you're not alone. Thank goodness! The linked article above includes quotes from at least two people, if I remember right, who oppose Vick owning a dog. It's pretty typical of these kinds of articles. Dan's point, I think, is that these kinds of stories invariably celebrate the dogs' successes while dismissing Vick's, and that the assumptions about whether or not Vick should have a dog are based more on an emotional response than they are an even-handed assessment of Vick's rehabilitation. Vick saying that he would like to have a dog in the future is a positive thing that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.
  11. At another board I frequent, one with some focus on product development and design at Apple, the observation was made that Apple is not just a computer or technology company. It is -- or is becomming -- almost a kind of "life design" company. You get an iPod and dig it. Check out an iPhone and buy one. Get an iPad for Christmas and love it. Next thing you know, you're surrounded by Apple products and your whole "connected" experience has been radically altered. Eventually we'll all hop into our electric iCars to head over to iHop for some iPancakes. And when we get home at night we'll dial up an iMovie on our Apple TVs. The products they create, love 'em or not, have profound influence. From the iPod to the iPad, they are out front. All others are simply jockeying for position in the chase. Seems to me ...
  12. My dad, bless him, has three Windows-based laptops, and he is always complaining about them slowing down and having to call the Geek Squad to come over and pull the weeds from the hard drives for $80 a pop. It's like standard operating procedure with him. I wish he'd bite the bullet and get a mac. Old habits, I guess.
  13. And you'll recoup the money on repair costs, and eventual replacement costs, over the lifetime of the computer. (Unless you're Jim Alfredson and can build your own. ... )
  14. I tend to agree, with some hesitation. You certainly wouldn't want him having a dog and then have that trigger some sort of behavior on his part that would endanger the dog. I just don't know enough about how the whole psychology of criminal behavior works. Or enough about Vick's own rehabilitation. It's a bad analogy, but you wouldn't put a "reformed" child molester around children again for the sake of the child molester's rehabilitation. ... Kind of like that. Criminal behavioralists (or whatever they're called) might have something useful to say about whether he's at a point where he should be allowed to own a dog. I know he talks to at-risk kids about his experience, but that's a court-ordered deal, I'm sure, and I find myself wishing he would do more on his own. Devote a chunk of his salary toward animal rescue groups, for example. He may already be doing that, just don't know. It's all these "don't know" parts that throw up caution flags. I guess in the end, if he really wants a dog, he should take the legal steps necessary to try and get that done. His positive actions in that regard would speak louder to me than anything he says about 'wanting' to own a dog. And they would speak louder than any protest by animal-lovers who just reflexively oppose him ever having a dog again. I'm just happy to see that the dogs he did criminally abuse have made great strides in their recovery, and that the whole story might help adjust everyone's attitudes about the breed, and about what can be done for abused animals. We shouldn't just assume -- as was initially the case with these dogs -- that they can't be helped and that the only solution is to put them down. Far from it, it seems.
  15. There's a wonderful story running in newspapers today about the recovery of the dogs seized from Michael Vick a few years ago. Don't want to derail things here, but thought it might provide some cheer -- for Free For All in particular. Story here. And some video slide shows about the recovery process here. It truly seems to be a groundbreaking case. And the people involved in the rehabilitation of the dogs make a pretty convincing argument that this breed is the victim of a lot of misconceptions, and that recovery, even for the worst cases, is possible. Anyways, thought it might cheer FFA up a bit.
  16. I've called up the site on two different versions of Firefox (at home and at work) and don't have the dropdown problem you describe.
  17. Sorry to hear about Clancey. Looks like a sweet dog.
  18. Great. Will be placing an order in a few days.
  19. Sam Rivers?
  20. Sorry to hear this. Sounds like it is a wonderful place. Best of luck.
  21. Nicely done thedwork.
  22. Ordered the other day: Art Tatum -- "I Got Rhythm"
  23. Saw him interviewed just within the past few months on one of the daytime ESPN shows and he was still sharp as a tack, cracking jokes. Very much on top of it mentally. I recall his shows from the 60s as well. He was pretty hard core about diet. RIP
  24. Great disc! Someone should snag it.
