  1. thank you. cardinals live only about a year. only the males are brightly colored. this guy perched seemly motionless for at least 15 minutes, until i moved on. I thought that might be the case and went nosing around but found no definitive answer. Several sites agreed with the one-year lifespan, although others offered varying ranges, including this rather wide one: LINK They apparently mate pretty much constantly, so they've got that going for them. In any case, nice photos and lovely thoughts. Thanks.
  2. Wonderful pictures. Why won't he be there next year?
  3. Beautiful cover. Available for order, yes?
  4. They need a new stadium. Imagine if that thing had come down during a game. And prior to the collapse, I don't think there was any talk of postponing the game out of concern for the safety of the building. Maybe there was somewhere, but it certainly wasn't front and center.
  5. Trying not to sound too naive, but has anyone considered that Lee just might view the Rangers as the better team going forward? Nolan Ryan certainly has a lot of appeal as an owner. And the Yankee roster is getting a little long in the tooth. All things being (relatively) equal, now that they've had a taste of playoff success, the Rangers might just be the better option from a competitive standpoint.
  6. No jazz musicians. I do have a canceled check with Charles Dickens' signature though. It sits in a rather dilapidated frame, I'm afraid.
  7. Had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Moody play with the Newport All-Stars several years ago. Rest in peace.
  8. Thanks for alerting us. Will look into this, definitely. Congratulations.
  9. Sorry to hear this. Wishing her the strength to overcome it.
  10. I think many college teams do play a 12-game schedule now. A shorter bowl season ending emphatically on Jan. 1 would be nice.
  11. You wanna trump the iPad hands down? Get her a big old fuzzy Teddy bear. The bigger, the better!
  12. Too many bowls. Too drawn out. If the NCAA isn't going to institute a playoff system, I wish they'd go back to playing all the big bowl games on New Year's Day for one final holiday football feast, and then be done with it. (Sorry to pee in the punch bowl right off the bat.)
  13. I'm half-watching the Jaguars-Titans game, and this Finnegan guy (Titans DB who baited Texans WR Andre Johnson into a fight a week ago) couldn't make a tackle if his life depended on it. How he stays on an NFL roster is beyond me. On one play, a Jaguars tight end was running toward him with the ball in the open field and Finnegan's strategy was to fall on the ground in front of the guy -- I guess hoping the tight end would trip over him. Didn't quite work, needless to say. He's been equally ineffective on several other plays where's he's had a chance to do something. Terrible player, judging from this game.
  14. Must have been quite an experience visiting with Flaherty. Having 15 vintage phonographs is, I'm sure, largely a product of his collecting. But I wonder how many different players he would 'need' in order to be able to play all the different kinds of cylinders/records he has in his collection? Records (and cylinders, I'm sure) were early on designed to play on specific machines, yes? Anyways, nice article. Thanks for linking it.
  15. Good stuff, Jeff. Love the photo of Rainey's piano. Thanks!
  16. I'm a hack. A non-artistic hack.
  17. Thanks for posting the link. Interesting tale.
  18. I'm not a professional anything, but I liked Leslie Nielsen. And he was most certainly 'in on the joke.' RIP and thanks for the chuckles.
  19. You won't beat it, unfortunately. You could check with some kind of legal aid outfit to see what they say, just to satisfy your curiosity about telling it to the judge. And $70 for a parking ticket? Geez! EDIT: I was going to suggest calling the Bay Guardian or alt. weekly of your choice about the ticket scam, if you can offer some corroboration. Allen may be onto something there. That would be a hot-button issue, I'd think, if true.
  20. Big gap in the timeline of this thread. ... Happy Chanukah.
  21. These look very nice. Will revisit later.
  22. Totally Fake Baseball Cards
  23. In the category of "shortstops not named Jeter," there's talk that the Rays are shopping Bartlett around as they look for some bullpen arms. He's likely to get in excess of $5 mill for this year in arbitration, then on to free agency next season. Interested parties apparently include the Cardinals, Giants and Orioles, with the Padres, Pirates and Reds possibly in the mix. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming -- "The Days Of Our Jeter."
