Some reviews.

Bullpen, yeah. Big doubts. The move to acquire Manny and Damon is being perceived here, at least initially, as an effort (and a good one) to put some fannies in the seats this year, basically a transition year, while they reload for the future.

going green, going natural, going crazy

Gotta be honest with you. The tube part doesn't really factor into things when pondering which bum buddy to toss into the old shopping cart. -

I haven't received anything either. Then again, I didn't get in on the scam ... er, deal. Although I very probably would have had I seen GA's thread in time. (hoping to read happy tales of discounted delights arriving in everyone's mailboxes soon. Newly arrived chess books, even.) -
If the audio quality is comparable, and the artwork is satisfactory (and you don't plan to resell them) they seem like a fine alternative for OOP or otherwise prohibitively expensive discs.

The Congresswoman and the astronaut

Apparently she was on her feet today (with help) and may be on her way to a rehab hospital in Houston by Friday. Amazing. -

Go get 'em. Fantastic he wants to chat. Your natural-born curiosity will carry the day. Just don't take any valium or anything. Or if you do, wait till afterward, after you've written everything down. -
I wouldn't even keep the thing plugged into the wall if it has started smoking. Maybe you could give it to a high school shop class and see if those geniuses can fix it. (Do they still have shop classes in high schools? Probably not.)

How do you deal w/ all the music you'll never hear?
papsrus replied to colinmce's topic in Miscellaneous Music
An important insight. More and more these days I find my appetite/curiosity waning when it comes to music I've yet to hear, and my attention instead being drawn toward just getting deeper into the music I already have on hand (various pending Nessa releases notwithstanding). -

Touching. Some people are just cut from a different, very rare, cloth. Thanks for posting the link. -
That's cool. Maybe skill is overrated. Anyways, back to the NFL, where brute force, bravado and beer rule the day!

Ohhhhh. You said Canadien! Well, yeah. You're right.
-
Mmm. Not so sure about that (11 of top 20 GS are Canadian. Next closest country is Sweden, with 5): Leading goal scorers: 1. Crosby (canada) 2. Stamkos (canada) 3. D. Sedin (sweden) 4. St. Louis (canada) 5. H. Sedin (sweden) 6. Richards (canada) 7. Zetterberg (sweden) 8. Perry (canada) 9. Eriksson (sweden) 10. Kopitar (slovenia) 11. Staal (canada) 12. Ovechkin (russia) 13. Sharp (canada) 14. Heatley (canada) 15. Duchene (canada) 16. Thornton (canada) 17. Kesler (united states) 18. Iginla (canada) 19. Lidstrom (sweden) 20. Byfuglien (united states) NHL players by nationality 2009-2010 (top seven countries): # Canada - 433 # USA - 168 # Czech Republic - 42 # Sweden - 42 # Finland - 29 # Russia - 25 # Slovakia - 14 And, as we know, they hold the Olympic gold. I go with Canada on this one.

Seems as though the four teams left are about right. Three of the four are peaking at the right time. The Bears had the Seahawks, and got a little soft at the end, so it's hard to gauge where they're at. Jets-Steelers: Lots of defense. Should be a great game. Steelers offense may be a little more multi-dimensional than the Pats offense was Sunday, with no deep threat and basically a dink and dunk passing game that Rex blew up with 18 DBs on every play. Same defensive scheme probably won't work against the Steelers. And I don't see three-man pressure bothering Roethlisberger too much. Packers-Bears: If Rodgers plays like he played in Atlanta, Bears will be in fast trouble. Don't think Cutler can match him if he's playing at that level -- and he seems to play at that level in the playoff games. I'm looking for a Packers-Steelers showdown in Dallas. Sweet!

Thanks Jeff. I really enjoyed these. Will be quite interested to learn the identities of many of them.

OK, I sneaked a peek before posting my comments, and it's obvious that some of the tracks loaded into my iTunes in the wrong order. I hope to sort it out later, but will post the notes I jotted down while I listened to this very enjoyable compilation anyways. Maybe Jeff you can help me sort out the wrong numbering. Anyways, really excellent music. After several false starts listening to the whole compilation, I just sat back and enjoyed it earlier today. 1. B3 not in my usual listening, but this is great. Nice groove. 2. Muskrat Ramble. Some sizzling tuba toward the end. Don't know who it is but I love this rendition Jeff. 3. I love freebop in this vein. Nicely scripted. I'm guessing the piano player is the leader here, but I don't know who it is. 4. Basie? Not quite. Don't know. Trumpet player is on fire. Maybe Diz? Bah, I just don't know. Great tune. 5. One of those way out klezmer bands you dig? With a Jamaican vocalist? Very cool. I'll be interested to learn who this is. Sounds like it may have been recorded quite some time ago. 6. Vaguely familiar. Can't place it. Sounds a bit like a Carla Bley big band recording? 7. What do we have here? That sure sounds like Ribot on guitar. That's his thing to a T, isn't it? 8. Who plays alto like this? John Handy maybe? That'd be my guess, although not in a setting I've heard him in. 9. Not feeling this one too much. Slick guitar player though. 10. No idea. Nice. 11. Love this one! Melford? Alto could be Braxton, although I'm not confident in that at all. Not quite his playing. More like Berne, maybe? 12. Well, I feel like I should know this. Is your buddy Boyce Brown involved in this one? 13. Rollins influence on tenor. What's the name of this tune? I know it but it's not coming to me. 14. Don't know the tune. Band's sound is enormous! 15. Love the trumpet. Reminds me a little of Miles, but the guitar .... ?

Money for nothing and dumbasses for free
papsrus replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Correct me if I'm mistaken here, but I believe in Canada there is generally more respect afforded to the sensitivities of minority groups, and corresponding protections from a more 'maternal' government against speech that easily falls into the category of "hate speech." I remember about a year ago, maybe more, Coulter was dis-invited from speaking at a university in Canada because of some of the inflammatory things she planned to say. -
Where does your cyber self hang out?
papsrus replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Here mainly; stop in at AAJ from time to time; the Motley Fool daily; lately hanging around Destination Out more and more; Talking Points Memo; I know when land at Huffpost I've reached the point of complete boredom and it's time to log off. -

Newton never did take command of the game like maybe he could have. He missed a wide open receiver in the end zone on one throw and fumbled the ball away late, leading to a Ducks' game-tying TD on the ensuing drive. Those two miscues alone resulted in a 15-point swing (missed TD for Auburn, TD for Oregon and 2-point conversion after the Newton fumble). Even if you factor in the safety Oregon gave up after Newton missed the open receiver for a TD, those two mistakes still account for a 13-point swing. Newton did have some rushing yards and made some nice plays through the air. But he certainly let some opportunities slip away as well. As a result, the Ducks were in it until the end. I guess it came down to the Auburn defensive front pretty much controlling the line of scrimmage when they had to. That forced the Ducks into some misdirection, trick-play type stuff. Some of it worked. Some of it didn't. But, an exciting finish and a fun game to watch, even though neither offense seemed to be firing on all cylinders.

Five in a row for the SEC.

Any given Sunday (or Saturday). The skill level among the majority of NFL players is basically about the same. There are some elite athletes, but by and large, these guys are all cut from the same cloth. It comes down to coaching and game-planning, I believe. Carolina could rise up and beat the Patriots on any given Sunday, with the right game plan. So I'm not shocked that Seattle beat New Orleans. The only way Seattle finishes with a winning record is if it wins the Super Bowl. I'm fairly confident they'll exit the playoffs as they entered -- with a losing record.

Fan here also. Very interested to hear something of Roberts' Coin Coin project.
