  1. I haven't heard the music, but what a great Jim Flora cover this has: On now, Fresh Sound lp reissue
  2. Thanks for the reminder Brownie, one to dig out and play. (edited for typo)
  3. Again Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers - Selections From Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady etc. RCA Black and White (Fr) Unplayed for years so it came as a surprise. Lovely session, The Messengers jump into these melodies with bags of energy, Griffin especially and Blakey drives it along brilliantly. Highly recommended
  4. A sentimental choice, but still wonderful "Hank's Other Tune" from Byrds Eye View. Blue Note but originally on Transition.
  5. I guess their back-catalog would yield a few such sets - George Adams, Don Pullen, David Murray, Max Roach, Andrew Hill etc etc. Maybe if there is a feeding frenzy on these sets more will come. By the way does anyone know where there is a complete discography of these labels/ Many titles are in print and listed on their website, though you can't browse it by artist name which is a drawback. What these labels did was document, in some cases extensively, many American (and other) artists who were and mainly are ignored by American labels, or who spread their activites between independents (of which BS/SN must be the largest) and were made very welcome in Europe. These boxes are a welcome reminder that these Italian labels are actually classic labels - during decades which may be less than truly classic, but at least we have the evidence. So hats off to Giovanni Bonandrini and his catalogue of 500+ titles - let's hope for a few more box sets. I'd love to see a David Murray box.
  6. Last evening Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; Au Theatre des Champs Elysees. RCA Jazz Masters(France) first on today Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; Selections From Lerner & Loewes.... RCA Black and White (France)

    JUNK

This Argo album came up in another thread. I asked UK discographer Bob Weir if he had anything in his files. He came up with - Doc Severinsen(t), Jordan Ramin(as,ts,bar,p), Bernie Leighton(p), Trigger Alpert(b), Don Lamond(d). Ramin conceived and produced the LP. Looking at the label Ramin gets composer credits for all the non standard pieces.
  9. Nice and spring-like hear too. Love the frogs. The only frog I've seen so far was a victim of a hit and run.
  10. Ha ! Does it have the circular Blue Note France poster in it? Great session. I have that on the DMM and twofer too. And just got the 45rpm ! No poster, essay inner though.
  11. Kenny Dorham; Trompeta Toccata. Blue Note (King Records Japan) next up Lou Donaldson; Lightfoot. Blue Note (Toshiba Japan)
  12. Freddie Hubbard; Here To Stay; Blue Note-Pathe DMM. Just unsealed this, bought it new 25 years ago, can't believe I've not played it since I disposed of the double, probably around the same time!
  13. Dexter Gordon; Go! Blue Note (UA)
  14. Ray Draper; Tuba Jazz. Vogue Double (John Coltrane One Two & Four)
  15. Chet Baker; Chet Is Back. RCA Jazz Masters(France)
  16. Mine's okay in the latest IE. Try compatability in the tools menu.
  17. I love this one, one for my desert island.
  18. Me too, never noticed it before.

    Sal Salvador

What about the two albums on Beehive, Starfingers and Juicy Lucy? Both fine sets.
  20. I can't say I've heard much of Gillett on the radio but I read his book about the Atlantic label, Making Tracks, many years ago.
  21. Philly Joe Jones; Blues For Dracula; Riverside (Japan)
  22. Young Men From Memphis; Down Home Reunion. United Artists (Japan)
  23. I'm not familiar with many Venus recordings but I've always found that Jim Anderson gets a great piano sound at Avatar.
  24. Yes, the difference is STEVE KUHN! That's right but also the material is strong and is treated with respect.
