Billy Harper is one of those playes with a stunning sound. Those first albums on Denon, Black Saint and with Max Roach really capture his sound beautifully. But when it comes to his more recent things I'm not so convinced by his playing. There seems to be more energy than substance. Fortune too has a big strong sound and for me much the same thing applies. His interpetations of Monk are his most satisfying recordings where he's more disciplined and working with stong material.
I wanted to enjoy this a lot more than I did, not that it's bad. Shame because Fortune and Harper are both fine players.
