  1. I was very sympathetic to Strata East when they came out and bought an awful lot of their stuff despite their occasional disasters. Over the years I got rid of several including the Tollivers. A mistake maybe but Tolliver's Strata Easts never appealed to me. I've stilll got about a dozen lps on the label which do and I wouldn't part with them. At least Strata East was issueing jazz at a time when it was pretty thin on the ground.
  2. Again something I've not played for a while. I didn't recall it being a classic Coltrane date and from playing it again I don't think I'll change my mind. For me the meat of the date is Ole. I don't hear it as being especially Spanish, more a My Favorite Things meets Africa Brass. The rest of the disc seems rather ordinary, Trane kicks off his Dahomey Dance (not very African considering the title) solo with his stock blues phrases and it all seems a little casual. It's all listenable and interesting, maybe they were just fulfilling their Atlantic contract, recording as they did for Impulse a day or two earlier.
  3. All vinyl this weekend, no special reason for the bias towards BN and Atlantic. Hank Mobley; The Flip and Reach Out Curtis Fuller; The Opener Shelly Manne; Boss Sounds Ray Bryant Trio (Prestige) Johnny Griffin; The Swingers Get The Blues Too (aka Soul Meeting with Matthew Gee) Grassella Oliphant; The Grass Is Greener
  4. I can't say that I feel particularly happy at AAJ. This forum seems right for me.
  5. Well I finaaly made up my mind, I'm going for the "Transition Sessions". It was "Byrds Eye View" that got me into hard bop and Mobley more than 40 years ago so it means a great deal to me.
  6. If I read the Ayler tree discography correctly, they have the unnissued Fondation Maeght music.
  7. "Accent On the Blues", Patton, Kabell, Fantastic!
  8. You could try an email, info@jazzmessengers.com. Phone is +(34)93 440 71 05 or fax +(34)93 448 47 23. I always found them helpful and prompt as Planet Music, and they speak good English.
  9. Not much help I know but there was one on BBC Radio London I guess about 20+ years ago with Brian Priestley. I recall it was so slow it was almost painful to listen to.
  10. I wouldn't want to be without any of these, but if pressed it has to be Gil Melle with the Foster/Wallington a very close runner up.
  11. I want to vote for three B)
  12. You could try Wadada's and Henry Kaiser's take on electric Miles on Yo Miles(Shanachie). Some fine blowing and a lot of fun. Nothing spacy but a lot of hard playing.
  13. Red, there is no website mentioned in the booklet.
  14. Von Freeman; Doin' It Right Now Shelly Manne; Jazz Gunn Dizzy Reece; A New Star
  15. The Blue Note titles are very interesting, several unusual things. the weird colours are right then? Thanks for the warning EKE, I found them okay in the past, but I'll certainly treat them with caution.
  16. Received a brochure today from Jazz Messengers in Barcelona. Looks very similar to the Planet list. Similar prices too. No web site given but email is info@jazzmessengers.com
  17. I enjoyed playing this through again. I like the easy going nature of the originally issued set. The horns sound happy and relaxed, laid back even, and Carter and Waits maintain a straight ahead groove for the most part throughout. Hill springs a few surprises along the way with his note clusters and slightly off centre playing. Nice solos too from the horns on the second (earlier set) but overall I thought there was an uncomfortable feel in places. Hill is more outgoing, Workman's adventurous so maybe it's the drummer that doesn't quite hold it together for me. Still it's a solid set, something I can listen to any time and enjoy.
  18. Nice picture too
  19. Jutta's obit in one of the Uk papers included the following When Art Blakey asked her to sit in with his band at New York's Cafe Bohemia, she refused saying she was drunk and anyway did not think she was good enough. Blakey dragged her to the piano, and started playing a tempo which she could not handle. Blakey then addressed the audience; "Now you see why we don't want these Europeans coming over here and taking our jobs"
  20. Here's a quote from Cullum from the London Daily Telegraph "I'm not playing hardcore free jazz. This is a lot more modern"
  21. Things are looking up at Verve.
  22. You know I've not played any Freeman for years. I'm just about dust off Have No Fear. Some of these threads make me dig really deep into the collection. That has to be good.
  23. Giuffre Verve's are fine. Fortunately Polydor France brought out Ad Lib, In Person and The Easy Way years ago. You are righ they could do with reissue, they would make a nice 2cd set.
  24. This add is being run on UK tv. And I drive a Honda.
  25. No long free pieces in this concert, a mix of standards plus a couple of bop numbers and three or four slow ballads I didn't recognise. Everything played was relatively short. Every Keith Jarrett Trio concert is going to worthwhile and while there were some exceptional touches which grabbed the ears, overall I didn't feel that the trio were on top form, but then they have been going successfuly for twenty years The audience loved it all.
