I'm happy with the Fontana issue. The de-echoed alternates are worth having. For those of us who have lived with and loved the original the inclusion of the lp tracks in original form is a nice touch. I'd go for the complete on Fontana.

Prompted as much by DEEP's remarks as Jutta's death I thought I'd give her a spin. There's not too much to complain about her playing on the "With Zoot Sims" album, it is not particularly original but pleasant and workmanlike imo. I also tried a German recording from '54. Her playing here is rythmically rather stiff, something akin to Dave Brubeck of the period. I'll have to try to find the time to play the "Hickory House" records again.

New Album of the Week: Charles Mingus, Mingus x 5
JohnS replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Album Of The Week
I'm playing this on my thirtynine year old British HMV mono pressing, bought new at the time. Fortunately it's still in very good shape and sounds fine, though some of the edits are pretty obvious even on this issue. I'll own up straight away to not enjoying those thick sax harmonies which crop up here and on "Black Saint.." but that apart there's some agreeable music here. but I don't think it's great by Mingus standards. The most enjoyable track for me was the most straight forward, Hora Decubitus. Good solos and a nice degree of genuine excitement. It doesn't have the lasting impact of say "Ah Um" which never fails to delight. I hadn't remembered, or maybe never realised, that all the pieces here are reworkings of earlier recordings. In every case the original is superior in my opinion. I love this topic. There's no way I would have pulled this record from the shelf without it and listened to it properly again for the first time in so many years. I'm sorry I didn't enjoy it more. -
Stefan, I'll second the recommendation for the London Eye. It's agreat ride and wont break the bank.

Yeah, let's hear it for JJ. I'll go for the Mosaic set, the Blue Notes and particular favourite Proof Positive. Of the later things I like the two Village Vanguard sets on Emarcy, Quintergy and Standards. But then he never made a bad record.

Rays (Charing Cross Road) and Mole (Grays Inn Road) are the places for jazz records in the city centre. Musuems and galleries, The Tate, Tate Modern, National Gallery, British Museum. There are more depending on taste. If you are heading south towards Portsmouth (historic ships) I''ll buy you lunch. You'll probably find decent food expensiv, no recs there I'm afraid.

I quit in my thirties (thirty years ago). I spent the equivalent of the cigarette money on lps. Being rather lowly paid at the time there was nothing left for smoking and it worked. Recommended as a way to stop.

I see Roy pops up on a new Cadence Jazz cd, "Jemeel Moondoc All Stars Live in Paris". I seem to remember a report of this band live as being pretty good. Anyone tried this cd yet. I was slightly disappointed by Khan jamal CIMP cd with Roy and Jemeel hence the question.

Just checked the board index. There are more members viewing it currently than any forum!

I heard it too but can't remember. However if it had a tenor (George Coleman) and a trombone (Julian Priester) it was from Victory and Sorrow on Bethlehem.

I was more than a little disappointed by "Always Let Me Go". The playing is fine but as Green Dolphin says there are some longeurs and I missed the strong melodic base. For me the beauty of the standards trio was just that, they played standards with affection and at just the right tempos. Although Jarrett's solos would often veer off from the original piece they were always logical. The trio is playing here next month, it will be interesting to see how the concept comes over live. I was at one of the "Inside Out" concerts and that was pretty breathtaking stuff.

My neighbour was there. When I see him I'll ask him if he has any recollection of what took place.

I guess it's got to be Wayne, but Hank runs him close.

"damn, that's one of my favorites..." corner

I posted this elsewhere too. Sweet Sapphire Blues by John Coltrane could go on for another round of solos as far as I'm concerned. -
I love the way Red kicks off Sweet Sapphire Blues on Black Pearls. I love the rest of it too, everyone's relaxed and comfortable and the tempo's just right. A great way to spend eighteen minutes.

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
JohnS replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
Let's talk about Tina Brooks' Minor Move. -
Don't overlook the John Patton.

I don't know about these items but I was playing Beirach yesterday. Nice stuff with the George Mraz trio (Peter Donald is the drummer) on the Czech ARTA label. There's some nice Beirach on Double Time as well.

True, but buy three, have them shipped in "jewel box begones" and you get shipping for the price of one. That comes in below the import duty level in the UK and will be cheaper than buying locally. And of course they want to encourage subscitions to the magazine.

Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
JohnS replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
I'd like to see some more posts as I like the idea too. Is there a nominating process and a facilitator? -
Lon, On reflection maybe I thought differently at the time. I must have liked Ghetto Music enough to buy Happening a few months later. Or perhaps I was just a Blue Note Junkie.
-
Lon, I like the voices on the Hill disc (perhaps the best example of this type of thing, same goes for Hill's writing for strings)-and the Sun Ra vocal additions are fine with me. But these are somehow....

Talking of Ragin; his latest release Feel The Sunshine on Justin Time hasn't had a great deal of publicity. It's pretty much a straight ahead date with Assif Tsahar, Craig Taborn, Jaribu Shahid, Tani Tabal and Bruce Cox. Still have my lp of Snurdy. Not played for a while but I remember being quite excited by it when it first came out. As I recall the Barefield, Tabal and Shahid trio was something completely fresh to my ears then. I'm about to give it a play.

It's listed as a new release on Blue Note in the UK this month-presumably a Rare Groove. Buyers should treat with caution though. I don't think I have ever had any urge to play it again since I bought the lp when it first came out. Ditto Ghetto Music. It's those voices.
