  1. Agree with all above. I have the JRVG (mini lp) and it is dramatically superior to both Capitol editions (the original and expanded cd issues).
  2. Thanks for posting the link. Those photos of Ornette are badazz.
  3. Thanks! I did not know that (maybe because I don't own the album).
  4. Oh, and yes I'll be picking this one up too, I'm also a fan of Brotz + percussion, with Han Bennick being my favorite percussionist w/ Brotz. Never heard of this other drummer that's on this set though, but that's not going to stop me from buying it.
  5. There's also Ayler on soprano and alto as well.
  6. Where does Jackie appear on tenor?
  7. I think that link said its listed at $19.98, and the regular price is $16.09; so with the additional 11 cent discount, the total discount is $4
  8. There's also Brotz, Braxton and Kirk.
  9. Very well documented instances of Shorter and Trane on Soprano. And at least one instance of Trane on Alto such as this cover photo indicates:
  10. Nice date. I rank it with Lee's other dates from the late 60's such as Sonic Boom and the Procrastinator. I think I'll spin this one again today, thanks for bringing it up!
  11. However, I did not know there was a live date in Montreux. Do you have any details, personnelle, etc? It's one of five concerts recorded at the Festival on July 5 , 1973 , four of which were issued on Blue Note LPs . It's Ronnie in a trio with Gregory Miller on guitar and Marvin Chappell on drums . Four tracks , including a version of Chunky from Freap , and a cover of Seals & Crofts' East of Ginger Trees . Has not been reissued to my knowledge . Thanks for the info! Never saw that before.
  12. Never got into the MP3/CDR/Ipod/Emusic/Itunes biz. I've always liked having a genuine product manufatured by the label or legally representing the label with, if possible, the original artwork, notes etc. For me, the music is an experience that's not just strictly listening. I like to look at the cover art and photos and read about the music in the liner notes, while listening to the music. It seems harder to do that when there are 10,000 songs all compressed in a box. I guess I'm kinda old-fashioned that way.
  13. Huge Sun Ra blowout in the used cd bin today: Somewhere Else-Rounder Love in Outer Space-Leo A Night in East Berlin-Leo Friendly Galaxy-Leo at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in Exile 1974-It is Forbidden-Total Energy + Andrew Voigt/Anthony Braxton-Kol Nidre-Sound Aspects
  14. Well today, fate was in a pleasant mood, as the used cd bin was filled to the hilt with Sun Ra cds. Naturally I bought them all. Here's what I got: Somewhere Else-Rounder Love in Outer Space-Leo A Night in East Berlin-Leo Friendly Galaxy-Leo at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in Exile 1974-It is Forbidden-Total Energy So far I've listened to everything except the Total Energy and Somewhere Else is a favorite with Love in Outer Space a close second. Does anyone else own these titles? What are your opinions of them?
  15. Great movie! Great soundtrack! One of my favorite lines besides the ones already mentioned between Lance and Vince: "Vince: Which one's Trudi? The one with all the shit in her face? LANCE No, that's Jody. That's my wife."
  16. Isn't the Two Headed Freap his first BN, which besides Sweet Revival, would be the only ones preceding the Montreux date? I was lucky enough to find Two Headed Freap in a $2.50 bin a few years ago and considering its rarity nowadays I guess I lucked out. What really caught my eye though was George Duviver's name in the credits although it seems that he does not play on every track and its hard to even hear where he plays and the booklet just repeats the credits on back tray card...no liner notes! By and large, its a decent date that really doesn't have me yearning to hear more. However, I did not know there was a live date in Montreux. Do you have any details, personnelle, etc?
  17. Sneaking in to see the Chick Corea Electrik Band? I think I would've snuck right back out
  18. Second the kudos. Nice work guys!
  19. Charlie Mingus Sextet w/Eric Dolphy-Cornell 1964-BN/EMI Gerry Mulligan-Jeru-Columbia/Legacy
  20. Shocked to read this this morning. Besides Jaws I think I've only seen him in two other movies (All that Jazz and I think the French Connection) and I thought he did an excellent job in those. RIP.
  21. From Entertainment Weeky: "...The evening's second-most head-scratching moment, after Herbie Hancock's Album of the Year win. " Typical: Is it just so unbelievable that someone who isn't a rock or pop artist can actually win the award? God forfreakingbid.
  22. Yeah, the Rare Grooves was a great series. I'm very happy they got as much Patton out as they did. Turrentine's Easy Walker is another favorite.
  23. The Grammys were on last night?
  24. Does anyone know the reason why they changed pics on Something Else? For instance, was it because the first photo was too conservative-looking for the music and they thought that a bearded, non-suited Ornette looked more radical and represented the music better?
