  1. Are you forgetting that the label's "quality control" went way South at one point when it embraced shallow funk? Chris, are you calling Baby Face Willette, John Patton, Lou Donaldson, Freddie Roach, Lonnie Smith, Reuben Wilson, Grant Green, Jimmy Smith, Stan Turrentine & Don Wilkerson shallow funk? Or do you mean what happened after Francis Wolff died? I'd have to admit that, even with this line up, Blue Note wasn't as good as Prestige at this stuff but dismissing it doesn't seem anywhere near right. MG I asked him the same question above and I think he acknowledges that he's referring to the "Dr." Butler, post-Lion/Wolff years. Well Dr. Butler did produce Lee Morgan's "The Last Session" so he couldn't have been all that bad.

  3. For sure! Muhal is simply awesome on this one. Listened to some sound clips and it does sound really good. I thought I heard a trombonest. Maybe George Lewis?
  4. Yeah, that was creepy, espcially when he was moving in closer and closer to Paula while singing. My favorite verse: "if I was a plumber I would caulk her"
  5. I think it was Cristy Lee Cook
  6. Watching it now with the wife. Agree the kickboxer kicks ass! Howz about Randy's snazzy sideburns?
  7. Freezing in the 20's and its going to get colder this weekend.

  9. Actually, I found this used in a local shop for about $8 just a couple of weeks ago. Had no idea it was so OOP (though according to Amazon it isn't hard to score an import for $12 or so). It is nice, though I also wish they could find a way to release the unissued tracks. This must be the year of let's sell our copy of Sweet Rain because I just landed the cd in a local shop today for $8 and its like mint! I really like this date especially the first track 'Litha' which I believe is a Corea tune off Tones for Jones Bones/Inner Space. I've never heard Stan stretch out so much and let loose a little.

  12. Nice Score!
  13. I have Corea's 'Early Circle' and would love to hear more!
  14. Title? Availability? It's called Hot Line: It's been available in Japan, but you might want to consider the 1896 American LP reissue , which adds a cut. Hot Line is a fine album indeed, not least for the way that Andrew Cyrille handle's Barron's quirky-ish compositions. Thanks!
  15. Title? Availability?
  16. It seems that after BN was sold to Capitol/EMI that there were the subsiderary labels. For instance, my copy of Wayne Shorter's Moto Grosso Feio is on 'One way Records' which is a 'Cema special market' from Cpaitol. I did not buy mine new, so I don't know what it went for list, but it seems that it must've gone for at least mid-price. There's also the 'EMI special products' label which seems to handle albums that the regular label is not willing to release, like Don Ellis' 'Essence'.

    Bob James

Yeah, I know Bob James, but I totally agree with CT here. Do not dismiss his ESP and Mercury date. I just picked up both recently and these are worthwhile listens. I'm enjoying both, if not the ESP more, quite a bit!

    Joe McPhee

Up. Have just recently enjoyed the three McPhee albums I own: Linear B, Topology and Old Eyes and Mysteries and all of these albums are a wonder! Its a shame because I've had had these cd's for years and it takes such a long time to get back to them, but when I do, I wonder why I put them off to the side for so long. I really like Linear B a lot-what a great, great disk!
  20. Particularly if she can pay my bills. Turns out she does! ...Well not with all her own money
  21. I mentioned this in another thread about music played in restaurants, so I'll mention it again. I was at Ruby Tuesdays awhile ago and they were playing Kenny G and Miles' Milestones in alternating tracks. Now that was distracting! I'm bobbing my head ready to call the manager over to say, "what a great choice" than Kenny G comes on...WTF!!!??? Then, of course there's that Visa commercial using that Herbie Hancock song....
  22. I said this earlier and I'll say it again: nerds+hot girl=awesome! There's nothing hotter than an attractive woman with a brain.
  23. Ok, I need to know how I can get a hold of that Bill Barron Motivation LP.
  24. Let's get physical, physical...
