  1. Hot nerds is an awesome combination!
  2. Well thanks everyone for your advice. I guess I'll buy the rest of them :rsmile: I won't be able to get back there until Tuesday, so I'll probably call and have them hold 'em for me.
  3. Its the Exchange in Willoughby, about 10 miles east of Cleveland. And this store usually sucks...until yesterday, and its funny because I go there like once a year and I decided to go there on a whim. Man, that was worth it! Even the non-jazz employees knew they got some good shit in. Nice score. I've never been to that one. The Record Exchange in Cleveland Heights used to be pretty decent once upon a time, as well as Record Revolution, both on Coventry. But these days I don't bother when I'm back in town. Mostly crud and new disks sold at list price. Any other interesting jazz material beyond the stack o' VEE?? Unfortunately, the era of good used cd shopping in the Cleveland area has come to an end. There used to be a CD Warehouse on Coventry too, but they always sucked and went out of business. But you're right both Record Rev and CD/Game exchange largely blow nowadays. The only decent place, believe it or not is the Half Price Books on Mayfield Road. About a year ago, a widow brought in her husband's cd collection for sale and it was all avant garde/free jazz stuff-four boxes of it! I must've spent $500 over the course of a month there! Concerning the Willow Exchange, they usually suck too and it was just a split second decision to stop in, which I do about once a year. Beyond the VEE's, there was a good deal of Trane on Impulse in nice shape, so I grabbed the ones I didn't have. Some Verve deluxes, LPR's and Verve by Request. All of them are still in print and available. And there was a lot of the Atlantic Deluxe editions too, of which I bought Trane's My Favorite Things and Kirk's The Inflated Tear to replace my badly worn copy. There was also a George Russell VEE, Live at the 5 Spot, which I already have, and a Russell Impulse, NY NY. Beyond that, the usual nonsense.

  7. I went to CD Now to listen to some tracks and now I'm totally not sure about this one. Although I dig organ playing, it sounds kind of old-fashioned here. So I may not pick this one up afterall. That's Bill Doggett I assume? I don't have the disc at hand, but it contains a lot of music from several sessions - the organ wasn't what I liked most, but I like Quinichette a lot, so to me it's a fine disc. I bought it in Warsaw when on vacation in 2000... didn't know Quinichette back then, or at least not beyond the Coltrane/Quinichette and Wheelin' and Dealin' discs... just sort of felt right for me to get it back then, and I never regretted that since, but if you don't like that kind of jazz, you might indeed either skip it or get it in order to trade it in for something you like (though that I never do). Right. Bill Doggett. From what I've read, Count Basie also plays organ on some tracks, but I didn't make it that far. It looks like there's somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 mins of music. That's pretty good!
  8. What do you mean? Just speaking in the mode of Harvey Kurtzman. Oh. Who that?
  9. I'd also recommend McLean's New and Old Gospel, since its now readily available again and also the not-so-easy-to-find 'Bout Soul; arguably his most 'out' date for the label.
  10. Is this the VEE Jimmy Cleveland or another set? the Cleveland date in the series is a single disc. And what a great date that one is too! That was my first purchase.

  13. Found all used yesterday: Sun Ra-Black Myth/Out in Space-MPS 2 cd set Sun Ra-Dance of the Living Image Vol 4-Tranparency 2cd set John Coltrane-Kulu Se Mama-Impulse! John Coltrane-Living Space-Impulse! Listen to Art Farmer and the Orchestra-Verve Elite Edition The Modern Jazz Society Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music-Verve Elite Edition Ray Brown-Bass Hit!-Verve Elite Edition Louis Bellson-Skin Deep-Verve Elite Edition Ornette Coleman-Dancing in Your Head-A&M Not a bad haul!
  14. Well I can now claim that I have 7 Elites thanks to the unbelievable luck that some dude brought a boat load in for trade at my local used cd shop. On top of that, they're in great condition. This dude even had two booklets in one of them; one was a 'bad printing' (which he wrote in tiny letters on the back of the booklet) and the other a corrected booklet and then he kept both booklets. He also kept all the stickers and crap that were on the wrapping. I guess I don't mind his obsessive/compulsive behavior in this instance Here's what I picked up: Louis Bellson-Skin Deep The Modern Jazz Society Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music Listen to Art Farmer and the Orcestra Ray Brown-Bass Hit! All for like $7 or $8 bucks a piece! So far, I've spun all but the Farmer and I have to admit that the Bellson is the surprise listen so far-what a great disk! There's a couple that I passed on, but maybe you guys can help me reconsider: Paul Quinichette:The Vice Pres (there was also the 'Kid from Denver' on Dawn) Buddy Defranco/Oscar Peterson-Play George Gershwin Illinois Jacquet-The Kid and the Brute Any opinions?
  15. Landed these Ra titles in the used bins yesterday: Sun Ra & his Intergalactic Research Arkestra: Black Myth/Out in Space-MPS 2 cd set Sun Ra-Dance of the Living Image vol. 4:The Lost Reel Collection-Transparency 2 cd set The Transparency set is neat because its a rehearsal tape that largely sounds like gig with a few interuptions and/or talking, tuning and rehearsing. I guess the box the reel was in was originally labeled as a concert given in Mexico in '74, but turned out to be this. The Black Myth/Out in Space set, however, is of a different caliber. It contains two complete concerts given in Germany in 1970 and all I can say is WOW . Not only is it well recorded, this band is on fire and it inludes Alan Silva no less. The music recorded here kind of reminds me of a mix of the Heliocentric Worlds meets Space is the Place, with lots of freak outs put in Overall, great stuff
  16. A very enthusiastic "I second that motion" on the Barron Savoys! Third it! Ted Curson is equally important on those sides. I have the 'Modern Windows Suite' reissue, which has seemingly gone out of print again.
  17. Right on! Me too. For me, the best discovery of 2007. I've been really enjoying his Hopscotch records, especially the solo disks and his collaborations with William Parker/In Order to Survive.
  18. For those interested there is an Oscar Peterson special on BET Jazz right now. I just happend to catch the middle of the show and I'm not sure when its on again. It looks like an hour long show called Rendezvous in New York. It ends at 11am. Enjoy!
  19. That we'll get a proper reissues of: Art Blakey: Hard Bop: Columbia Sam Rivers: A New Conception: BN Sunny Murray (Columbia Session) Jackie McLean (BN rejected 1968 session) for starters
  20. I should add that of course the older fans who saw them back then would continue to see them now too
  21. Chances are that those people never got to see The Police, Genesis or Van Halen w/DLR in their heyday because they were too young to see them back then. Remember how excited Kiss fans were when they learned that they were going to tour with the original members and makeup?
  22. Concerning this session (the 1968 date), I think it was mentioned that Jackie rejected this session, not BN because he didn't like Norman Connors' drumming (I think that's who it is), but does that mean that BN cannot go ahead and release it if they want? Does Jackie's word (or maybe written) mean that BN is not authorized to release it? From what I recall, it has some heavy cats on it like Grachan Moncur III and Woody Shaw. Maybe they could release it as a Conn with Hipnosis
