Chances are that those people never got to see The Police, Genesis or Van Halen w/DLR in their heyday because they were too young to see them back then. Remember how excited Kiss fans were when they learned that they were going to tour with the original members and makeup?

Blue Note alternate takes discography
AndrewHill replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
Concerning this session (the 1968 date), I think it was mentioned that Jackie rejected this session, not BN because he didn't like Norman Connors' drumming (I think that's who it is), but does that mean that BN cannot go ahead and release it if they want? Does Jackie's word (or maybe written) mean that BN is not authorized to release it? From what I recall, it has some heavy cats on it like Grachan Moncur III and Woody Shaw. Maybe they could release it as a Conn with Hipnosis -
Thelonious Monk's Blue Notes. Miles Davis's Blue Notes. Indeed. edit: hold the phone, I just checked my TOCJ copies and it says the 3/6/54 date was mastered by RVG. 4/20/53, 5/9/52 dates were remastered by RVG (it doesn't say who originally mastered them though.

whats up with this art blakey/tyronne washington
AndrewHill replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
I like this track! Would love to hear more. -
Well you never know. He's remastered non-RVG dates in the past, in fact I thought he did a pretty good job with Davis' Birth of the Cool and Brown's Jazz Immortal. There may be others that I'm not thinking of.

Just took a gander at their website and it doesn't look like they got too far, does it. My guess is that putting out the same titles that have been out on CD two or three times already didn't work out too well sales-wise. Yeah, and no wonder...all they did was take a few reissues from what had already been reissued wonderfully by Avenue Jazz (I think they were part of rhino?) and put them out again. Avenue Jazz did a great job reissuing the Bethlehem catalog. I guess they went out of business though. There's some great music in the Bethlehem catalog, it's too bad it's not readily available anymore. Well said, and that's precisely my point. The Rhino/Avenue Jazz program was one of the few domestic reissue programs to properly handle and release the more obscure titles like the Stan Levy, Urbie Green, Oscar Pettiford and Red Mitchell discs to just list a few. And of course, they also released the titles by the heavy hitters like Mingus, Dex and so forth.

What CD's Did You Get For Christmas, 2007?
AndrewHill replied to AndrewHill's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Merry Christmas to you too! Looks like a nice haul there. -
I have 'Strictly Powell" on RCA and the Complete Rec. of BP on Verve box set and I find these sessions to be just as enjoyable as his Blue Note work. There is alot of great music on the Verve box especially.

Seems appropriate to play his Christmas album on Telarc. RIP.

I think those Vitous/Haynes tracks were on the expanded CD editions of "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", no? So it would be "Early Circle", parts of "Circling In", plus possibly "Song of Singing"... I don't have the playing times of the music, but I guess the Circle material would fit onto two CDs, and with "Song of Singing" it might end up being three? Anyway, I did write them a mail suggesting this yesterday, will report if I get an answer! I got a reply from Michael a couple of days ago - he thinks it "is a good idea and with Song of Singing, it could be a full Select." (quoted from the mail he sent). Now there's hope! I'd love to get this music in fine sound an all packed and annotated nicely! (He also mentioned that rights on the CBS/Sony "Gathering" LP are unclear - hence it would rather be an EMI/BN set with "Song of Singin", if it happened...) That is great news! Hope it happens.

Tell Us When Santa Disappointed You
AndrewHill replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah, rolling skating was the rage when I was growing up (I grew up in 70's) and I wanted a pair of Classics roller skates that were jet black. Well Christmas rolls around and I see a box under the tree from "Santa" and when I opened it up, there was a pair of "generic" black skates, with no Classics label on it or nothing. Maybe that was the first time that I bacame really irritated with Santa's cheapness. -
Actually, I noticed at my location that they have an entire cart of holiday cd's out right now. You should be able to land one for about $6 or so.

I hope everyone's holiday is safe and fun!
