  1. Up. Was wondering if anyone picked up any of the new reissues. Saw the James and Bley in the store the other day. They're digipaks whereas the Cherry Vol. 2 is a jewel case. Its kinda strange how some are issued in jewel cases and others in digipaks. What's the logic there. And then... I almost bought Burton Greene's Bloom in the Commune only to find out that its really a reissue of the Burton Green Quartet. Now that's annoying . Why the hell can't ESP just release the album with the original title and artwork, so people don't end up buying something thinking its new material or something? At first glance, I thought it was some live album until I had to look at it real close. They did this already with Ayler's Spirits Rejoice and the Murray, although they didn't change the titles at least. But I'm starting to get really irritated and had to vent about the new ESP. I guess can't complain too much because they are getting some great material out like the Cherrys and the Howard/Phillips. Okay, I feel better now. -_-
  2. Really sad news. Thought his work with Bley and Peacock was amazing! RIP.

Definitely thumbs up for his support of Woody Shaw!
  7. First Chuck watching TV with Roscoe and Lester and now you getting a phone call from Roscoe? Man, I'd freak out if I had that kind of company over or if I got a phone call like that. I have no stories that come any where near that, but I did get to meet Lester at a "surprise" lecture my prof managed to set up. I was star-struck and dumbfounded when I met him. He looked just the way he did on the album covers and I was just standing there like what do I do now?...I can't believe I'm talking to Lester Bowie! After reading these accounts of some of you standing next to Trane, talking to him, I can't even imagine how cool that must've been. I am so jealous! :rsmile:

RIP. I'll keep this positive and say that I appreciated the fact that he produced Lee Morgan's "Last Session".
  9. I was just getting ready to put on Om until the wife just came back home from shopping. This album, after several listens, has really become a favorite of mine. I totally dig it!
  10. Up. Really enjoyed these recollections.
  11. Ironically, when I saw the title of this thread I just happened drive by the cemetary where Ayler's buried at the other day.
  12. Warmin' up here. Was able to sleep with the window open last night.
  13. Dig him on Cy Touff's Octet and Quintet.
  14. Thanks for sharing. Cool stuff.
  15. That's Where Its At is probably the one I would recommend as leader with Parlan's On the Spur of the Moment being my favorite sideman date. Always thought that Tommy was the perfect foil for Stanley. Runner Ups: Easy Walker. Nothing earth-shaking, but nice enough. The first track is my favorite. Hustlin. Tough, unfussy with Scott and Burrell in fine form. The Spoiler. Probably the only biggish band date I like from him. I couldn't sell Rough 'n' Tumble fast enough.
  16. I am/was too. I've been diggin' around on-line for some sound clips or full-length cuts, and I think I've found one long clip (actually two from the same tune, I think). http://www.ut-most.com/?pid=3842559 If you have a flash player loaded on your PC, it should auto-play when the page loads (the player is the widget at the top center of the page). The clip(s) appear to be two 45-second segments of the last tune from the original album: Clockwork Of The Spirits. Interesting... Thanks for finding/posting that. Interesting indeed. If the entire album has that vibe, I'm definitely picking this one up!
  17. Man that's great news! Keep us posted please! I only live a couple of hours away from Pitt!
  18. Do you have it as Studio 4 CD: TFCL-88925 — In Action (1992) or as Bainbridge CD: BCD 503 — In Action ? If it is the Bainbridge CD, could you provide release (copyright/print) date? Thanks in advance! Agustín It is the Bainbridge issue, but it makes no mention anywhere of when it was printed. All it says is this: copyright (the "p" and "c" in circles) 1964 J.S. Productions Inc, Mfrd & Dist. by Bainbridge Entertainment Co. Inc, PO Box 8248 Van Nuys, Ca 91409-8248. Don't know if that helps or not. HG
  19. I'm curious as to what Head On is like?
  20. Just found this used today and picked it up because I remembered reading about this date (here in this thread in fact ) years ago. This is a great disk and its hard to believe that In Action was cut on such an obscure label and got so little circulation at the time, and although I really can't add more than what's already been said (I think Sangry nails it prefectly) its a definite keeper.
  21. In the used bins today: Kenny Dorham-Jazz Contrasts-Riverside/Keepnews Collection Booker Ervin-The Freedom Book-Prestige/RVG Edition Lennie Tristano-Tristano/The New Trestano-Atlantic/Rhino J.R. Monterose-In Action-Bainbridge
