  1. I really tried to find some interesting albums. I was torn about choosing the Coleman title. I waivered between Shape of Jazz to Come, Change of the Century, and Free Jazz. I thought Change of the Century might be really interesting because it was recorded between the other two. I'm also more familiar with Shape of Jazz... and Free Jazz. I really haven't spent as much time with Ornette Coleman's earlier music as I should have, so this could be a good opportunity to increase my understanding of it. The Coltrane has been one of my favorites since I became interested in jazz. It was recorded around the same time as Africa/Brass (which you can tell is a favorite of mine) and I've just always dug this record. I probably would have chosen Africa/Brass if it wasn't in the two cd Complete Sessions format. Either AB or the old Impressions release would have been good. The Rollins is the only RCA title in print. I was trying to pick stuff that's easy to get. I'm not really familiar with the album, but the players on it are pretty interesting. You've got Coleman Hawkins and Don Cherry on the same album. Could be interesting. I have a bunch of Rollins discs and records, but I've never really gotten him yet. The Pee Russell title was just rereleased, and it has long been a favorite of mine. I thought this might be an interesting AOtW because it bridges early and later jazz, and to me, Pee Wee Russell was always interesting. This is a neat album because it was very late in his career and here he is on Impulse, playing Modern material. There are songs by Coltrane, Coleman, and Monk. I look forward to seeing what you guys choose. :rsmile:
  2. Howdy y'all, I really enjoyed Rooster Ties' Album of the Week poll, so I figured I'd carry on the tradition. This poll will end on Friday, May 2 at 5pm (Pacific Time). The album that is the winner of the poll, will be the Album of the Week for May 11-17. I think these would all be interesting choices. The Coltrane and Russell are two of my favorites, while the Coleman and Rollins would be interesting to dig into also. Edit: I originally nominated J.A.W. to choose the next album, but he's unable to do so. So my here's my revised nomination. For the May 18-24 Album of the Week, I am nominating pryan. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  3. I have a former coworker who keeps an internet diary. I've been checking up on it. It's actually kind of scary. I don't know if I'd want to share THAT much. After reading his web diary, I realize I should have been more concerned about him showing up to work armed to the teeth. I won't give the link.... I don't want to provoke him. GO PROZAC! :rsmile:
  4. Ah, I remember 33 like it was last year. Oh yeah, it was. In 4 months, you'll have to have a 33 1/3 birthday party. Being a music lover, it would appropriate. I hope you're still having fun with the Hofner! :rsmile:
  5. Happy Birthday, Joe! I hope you get everything you asked for.
  6. I was called in for jury duty a few months ago. When I found out I had to go in, I was pretty pissed off. I have to say, once I went in and did it, I ended up kind of enjoying it. I didn't get stuck on a trial or anything. I was called into a courtroom as part of a jury pool. It was fun watching the judge and the attorneys do the jury selection. I was impressed by the judge. He asked very astute questions and really seemed to get the truth out of people. It was a personal injury case, so if I would have had to serve, it would have only been for a week or so. It was nice being away from the office and seeing something different. Fortunately here in California, if you get called in, and you aren't seated on a jury. Your service is completed. They can't call you back for another year. Good luck B3-er!
  7. Joe, I dig when Jaco does those chords. I've been a big fan of his playing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira for a long time. I've only read passages from the Jaco book. What I read was really interesting (and sad). One thing I've noticed about this album is that (to me) it's much better on headphones. My first few listens were with headphones and this morning, I listened to it in the car. I felt like I was missing so much. There are so many subtle things to get into when you're wearing headphones. :rsmile:
  8. Sorry for the confusion, Rooster Ties. We extended the Lee Morgan an extra week due to the confusion over Joe's pick. You're correct, Joe's pick (Weather Report) starts today. So your album starts one week from today (Sunday). I'm really glad you went with Grass Roots. That's the one I wanted. :rsmile:
  9. pryan, The liner notes on my cd say that Jaco only plays on Cannon Ball and Barbary Coast. Johnson is on all the other tracks. :rsmile:
  10. I'll agree with that. Gerald Wilson was a big surprise. The first time I heard his album "Portraits", I was blown away. After that, I couldn't wait for the Mosaic set, and I have not been disappointed. :rsmile:
  11. You guys have mentioned some albums that really did it for me too. Horace Parlan especially surprised me. I've really enjoyed his Blue Note dates, and Jackie McLean's Destination Out was the album that made me a fan of his. Here's a couple that I really enjoy, but haven't heard mentioned anywhere. Pharoah Sanders - Izipho Zam (Strata East) Mal Waldron - Seagulls of Kristiansundi (Soul Note) Randy Weston - Tanjah (Verve) Marchel Ivery - Marchel's Mode (Leaning House) I know there are many more, but these come to mind, because I really didn't expect to like them as much as I do. :rsmile:
  12. My question is: How do I get a copy of this? :rsmile:
  13. I've listened to the album twice today. I plan on playing it all week. I've never really given Weather Report a chance. I got into jazz in the late 80's, long after the excesses of jazz fusion had given the genre a bad name to some. The Weather Report that I originally heard was from the end of the group, not when they were in their prime, as they are on this album. I had enjoyed Jaco Pastorius' playing on the Joni Mitchell album "Hejira" (which is still my favorite performance of him). But I had first heard Weather Report after Jaco had been killed, and I had read about his strange behaivor, so it was long after he had been so innovative. As far as Shorter, I had given up on him after his last Blue Note albums, and Zawinul had only come to my attention through his work with the Adderley's. So this was new territory for me. I have to say that I really like this album! I have to say that JSngry's post really hits the nail on the head. As I listened to the album (especially the Wayne Shorter compositions), I kept imagining them played with traditional instruments. I agree that is truly is jazz played with different instruments, and it really does have the spirit. I have never been a big fan of synthesizers in jazz, but whatever keyboards Zawinul played on this album sound very cool. I'm a big fan of early seventies German synthesizer music and it seems that Zawinul must have been listening to this stuff also. I've also enjoyed Wayne Shorter on this album. Soprano sax has been ruined for me by cats like Kenny G, etc..., but Shorter really is on fire in places. It's making me re-evaluate my narrow minded view of the instrument. I know that one of the big deals about this album is the appearance of Jaco. I have to admit that my favorite bass playing on this album is by Alphonso Johnson. Especially on the title track. I'm also digging the drums and percussion. In reading the liners, I see that the drummer, Chester Thompson came from Zappa's band. When I hear this album, I get a Zappa feel in places. I also really like the percussion. I really look forward to digging deeper into this music. This week's choice really is what the Album of the Week is about to me. It's about expanded my jazz listening by discovering and really getting to know great pieces of work that I hadn't given my attention too. One thing I really like about hanging around this board is that it has helped me in opening myself up, and not being as narrow-minded about music as I have been in the past. Great choice, Joe! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  14. I have finally gotten caught up on all the episodes of this show. It has become my favorite show. My wife even likes watching it. We watched it last night instead of "Trading Spaces" - I couldn't believe she wanted to watch "American Choppers" instead. I too, am blown away by what Paul Jr. accomplishes. I just finished watching the completion of the "race car" bike. I can't believe they built that thing in three weeks. Paul Sr. bugged me at first, and I thought that he really preferred the younger son (I think his name is Mike) to his other son (Paul Jr.). I found that as I've watched it, I see the reason he rides Paul Jr. so hard is because he truly wants him to be all that he can be. Heck, he formed the business around him. As for the younger son, the reason Paul Sr. laughs at him and doesn't ride him so hard is because he knows the guy hasn't amounted to much, and I think he accepts it. One thing I like about this show verses "Monster Garage" is that Paul Jr. (and even Paul Sr.) are more down to earth. I'm pretty tired of the loud music tattooed thing on "Monster Garage" - I don't care what you can blow up, I want to see what you could build. The original Jesse James show on Discovery was much more enjoyable than Monster Garage is to me because it was that way. Watching this show makes me want to go take metal shop classes somewhere. I don't know what this has to do with jazz, but I'm really digging it. :rsmile:
  15. I picked up my copy tonight. I've read the liner notes but have kept myself from listening to it until tomorrow (Sunday). I'm really looking forward to it. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  16. Rooster Ties, That would be GREAT!!! I've never had a chance to hear Dance With Death.
  17. I plan on making a cd out of my LP copy of Andrew Hill's One For One. I have the Mosaic set, so I would just burn the 1969 session. I'd be glad to add that. :rsmile:
  18. John B, Psychic friends!
  19. My favorite series of alternates occurs on disc 1 of the Sam Rivers Mosaic set. The four versions of Downstairs Blues Upstairs are quite interesting as a piece. I listen to them often. It would be great if BN reissued Fuschia Swing Song with these alternates included. :rsmile:
  20. Thanks Rooster Ties!!!! I really appreciate it. I've already been thinking about it all morning. I'll do you proud. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  21. When we started the AOtW, I was against using Polls to choose it. I was more concerned that we'd go round and round and never have an answer. I figured we'd end up with a thread where we all were throwing out suggestions. By having a person selected to choose the album, we avoid going in circles and it is fun to have the ability to choose an album you really love. I have to say that I'm all for mixing polls like this with the choice of the AOtW, but if the person who has been selected to choose the AOtW doesn't want to do it this way, that's cool too. If I ever get the opportunity to pick, I'll probably do it the same way. I'll narrow down my desired albums and then post a poll. What's also nice about doing it this way is that we can build up anticipation for the AOtW. I feel like I'm watching a horserace now. "Grass Roots has passed Jacknife on the outside...." :rsmile:
  22. In anticipation of Black Market being album of the week, I picked up a new copy of Weather Report: The Jaco Years compilation on Sony for $2.60 yesterday (the local Wherehouse record store is blowing everything out at 80% off). I still need to buy my copy of Black Market, but I'm getting into the right mood now. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  23. You guys are right. The first 12 came with a white tray. After those 12, BN started using the clear tray and listing the titles underneath it. Here's the list of the titles that didn't have the clear tray. (Thanks to couw, for the list!) SERIES I (1994) Ornette Coleman – The Empty Foxhole Don Cherry – Symphony for Imrovisers Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore – Blowing in from Chicago Kenny Dorham – Whistle Stop Freddie Redd – “The Connection” Andrew Hill - Judgement J.R. Monterose – S/T Bobby Hutcherson – Components Wayne Shorter – The All-Seeing Eye Johnny Griffin – The Congregation Tina Brooks – True Blue Baby Face Willette – Stop and Listen :rsmile:
  24. This would be a great Album of the Week in the future, when it is more readily available. I've been following this thread and now I want to go out and find a copy of it. :rsmile:
