  1. I just picked up Mysterious Traveler. I just unwrapped it. I'm excited about hearing it. I wanted to get Tale Spinnin' too, but I didn't have enough. Maybe next time. If you would have told me a couple years ago that I'd be buying Weather Report cds, I would have laughed. I really realize how narrow minded and elitist I have been in my musical tastes in the past. I didn't realize how much I was missing out on. Thanks to all for your input here! :rsmile:
  2. You're welcome! I'm really excited about this as Album of the Week. I love Andrew Hill, but I haven't given this album as much of my listening time as I have to his earlier albums. :rsmile:
  3. In case you don't know, emusic.com has the Contemporary Phineas Newborn albums. :rsmile:
  4. As it stands now, Coltrane has 10 votes and Pee Wee has 8. Who will win? Will Rollins and Coleman make a comeback? If you haven't voted, please do it! Tune in tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00 to see who wins! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  5. In regards to paying for downloadable .mp3 files, what do you guys think of the new service Apple Computers is now offering? I don't mind paying $10/month for unlimited downloads, but $1/song seems insane to me, especially as .mp3s. I know Apple has offerings from the major labels, but I just can't see people paying the money. Though, it could be popular with people who would buy singles, such as teens. Just curious? :rsmile:
  6. I've started the Album of the Week thread for Grass Roots. Album of the Week - Andrew Hill - Grass Roots :rsmile:
  7. The Album of the Week for May 4 - 10 as picked by Rooster Ties is: Andrew Hill - Grass Roots The Album of the Week works this way, the person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. Rooster Ties picked this week's title and nominated me, Africa Brass to pick the album for May 11-17. ___________________________________ Past albums of the week: April 26 - May 3: Weather Report - Black Market April 13 - 26: Lee Morgan - Live at the Lighthouse April 6 - 12: Charles Mingus - Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus March 30 - April 5: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye March 23 -29: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
  8. I agree with Rooster Ties. I dig Byrd's late sixties output. Rooster Ties, Congratulations! You are now a Supa Groover! :rsmile:
  9. Thanks Jazzbo! I really love listening to Pee Wee. I'll start looking for some of your suggestions. I'll also look for the Bobby Gordon cd. I love hearing Pee Wee on those Condon records. He's always such a highlight for me.
  10. Thanks Noj, I just did it! I like what I've heard so far. :rsmile:
  11. Speaking of Bloomfield. I love his work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag. Have any of you heard the Electric Flag's soundtrack to the movie "The Trip" - It has been a favorite of mine for years. If you've seen the movie, you'll know how well the music complements the action. It's an interesting recording by this group. It doesn't sound much like anything else they did. As for the Butterfield band. I've long been a fan of their early albums, such as East/West. I picked up a copy of Butterfield's post-Bloomfield 1969 album, Keep on Moving, which was reissued by a small reissue label called Wounded Bird Records. I'm surprised at how much I enjoy this record. In fact, I was listening to it this morning. I like some of the Butterfield albums when they added the horns. :rsmile:
  12. I got an email from emusic this morning. Here's a quote "we have increased the bit rate of our MP3s from 128 KBPS to a high-quality Variable Bit Rate (VBR). For those of you not familiar with the "ins and outs" of encoding, this means that the sound quality of our tracks has improved dramatically." I don't know much about VBR, but it would be great if they improve the quality of their mp3s. :rsmile:
  13. Thanks everyone for your help! I'm excited to see what album will win. I wish we could do them all. Jazzbo, What Pee Wee Russell cds would you recommend? I would really like to hear more of his music. I've got the Commodore cd and some stuff with Eddie Condon, but I'd like to explore more. Thanks in advance! :rsmile:
  14. I think I'll look for a copy of Mysterious Traveler. :rsmile:
  15. I've been enjoying this album so much that I'm going to pick up some Weather Report too. I truly am surprised how much I like this cd. Joe, now you've turned me on to Metheny and Weather Report. Thanks! I want to get something recorded before this album. What would you guys suggest? :rsmile:
  16. I really tried to find some interesting albums. I was torn about choosing the Coleman title. I waivered between Shape of Jazz to Come, Change of the Century, and Free Jazz. I thought Change of the Century might be really interesting because it was recorded between the other two. I'm also more familiar with Shape of Jazz... and Free Jazz. I really haven't spent as much time with Ornette Coleman's earlier music as I should have, so this could be a good opportunity to increase my understanding of it. The Coltrane has been one of my favorites since I became interested in jazz. It was recorded around the same time as Africa/Brass (which you can tell is a favorite of mine) and I've just always dug this record. I probably would have chosen Africa/Brass if it wasn't in the two cd Complete Sessions format. Either AB or the old Impressions release would have been good. The Rollins is the only RCA title in print. I was trying to pick stuff that's easy to get. I'm not really familiar with the album, but the players on it are pretty interesting. You've got Coleman Hawkins and Don Cherry on the same album. Could be interesting. I have a bunch of Rollins discs and records, but I've never really gotten him yet. The Pee Russell title was just rereleased, and it has long been a favorite of mine. I thought this might be an interesting AOtW because it bridges early and later jazz, and to me, Pee Wee Russell was always interesting. This is a neat album because it was very late in his career and here he is on Impulse, playing Modern material. There are songs by Coltrane, Coleman, and Monk. I look forward to seeing what you guys choose. :rsmile:
  17. Howdy y'all, I really enjoyed Rooster Ties' Album of the Week poll, so I figured I'd carry on the tradition. This poll will end on Friday, May 2 at 5pm (Pacific Time). The album that is the winner of the poll, will be the Album of the Week for May 11-17. I think these would all be interesting choices. The Coltrane and Russell are two of my favorites, while the Coleman and Rollins would be interesting to dig into also. Edit: I originally nominated J.A.W. to choose the next album, but he's unable to do so. So my here's my revised nomination. For the May 18-24 Album of the Week, I am nominating pryan. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  18. I have a former coworker who keeps an internet diary. I've been checking up on it. It's actually kind of scary. I don't know if I'd want to share THAT much. After reading his web diary, I realize I should have been more concerned about him showing up to work armed to the teeth. I won't give the link.... I don't want to provoke him. GO PROZAC! :rsmile:
  19. Ah, I remember 33 like it was last year. Oh yeah, it was. In 4 months, you'll have to have a 33 1/3 birthday party. Being a music lover, it would appropriate. I hope you're still having fun with the Hofner! :rsmile:
  20. Happy Birthday, Joe! I hope you get everything you asked for.
  21. I was called in for jury duty a few months ago. When I found out I had to go in, I was pretty pissed off. I have to say, once I went in and did it, I ended up kind of enjoying it. I didn't get stuck on a trial or anything. I was called into a courtroom as part of a jury pool. It was fun watching the judge and the attorneys do the jury selection. I was impressed by the judge. He asked very astute questions and really seemed to get the truth out of people. It was a personal injury case, so if I would have had to serve, it would have only been for a week or so. It was nice being away from the office and seeing something different. Fortunately here in California, if you get called in, and you aren't seated on a jury. Your service is completed. They can't call you back for another year. Good luck B3-er!
  22. Joe, I dig when Jaco does those chords. I've been a big fan of his playing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira for a long time. I've only read passages from the Jaco book. What I read was really interesting (and sad). One thing I've noticed about this album is that (to me) it's much better on headphones. My first few listens were with headphones and this morning, I listened to it in the car. I felt like I was missing so much. There are so many subtle things to get into when you're wearing headphones. :rsmile:
  23. Sorry for the confusion, Rooster Ties. We extended the Lee Morgan an extra week due to the confusion over Joe's pick. You're correct, Joe's pick (Weather Report) starts today. So your album starts one week from today (Sunday). I'm really glad you went with Grass Roots. That's the one I wanted. :rsmile:
  24. pryan, The liner notes on my cd say that Jaco only plays on Cannon Ball and Barbary Coast. Johnson is on all the other tracks. :rsmile:
