The old message was up over the weekend when I last checked it. They must have just changed it. I'm curious if they do relaunch the board. Will they use the Ultimate Bulletin Board software? There seems to be much more robust software out there, but the problem would be, losing the old messages on the board (that is, if they want to keep them). Poor Greg, floating around looking for a home.

I think that's a great idea! The Lee Morgan is such a long set that it probably wouldn't hurt us to have another 5 days with it. I know I'll be listening to it for a while. :rsmile: Can the board moderator edit this thread to reflect the extended Album of the week time period? April 13-26.

Thanks Alan! Those look like some interesting releases. I agree that it's a shame that Dr. Smith and others of his generation and caliber aren't recording more. If I only had my own record label.... As for Soulive, they're okay. It's enjoyable enough, but I would spend my organ trio budget on the Organissimo cd. I like it a lot more than Soulive. :rsmile:

I just unpacked my copy (I know it's a little late) and I've been able to listen to disc 1. I forgot how much I enjoy this set. The second song, Absolutions is my favorite. I feel like I'm entering Ole period Coltrane country on that one. I'm highly impressed by Morgan and Maupin. I think it's tough digesting multi-disc sets as the album of the week, but I'm glad we've had the chance to revisit this one. I'm sure I'll playing it all of this week. :rsmile:

Thanks for turning me on to Smith, impossible! I picked up Either/Or a week ago and have been listening to it constantly. I really love his songs, especially his chord progressions. You can tell that he's studied some of the masters (Beatles, etc.). His songs just get under my skin and make me want to listen to them over and over. I really am hooked! I think I prefer the earlier, more spartan recordings because they really show off his gifts. I have Figure 8, and I think something gets lost when more is added to the mix. I need to spend more time with Figure 8. I have a feeling the same riches are there, but they're a little harder to get to. :rsmile:

This is very sad news. He was a true giant.

I'm not sure what the album of the week is. CJ Shearn nominated JoeG in this thread, but he also nominated the album as he was nominating Joe, so I'm not sure what to do. If you're out there Joe, please check in and pick your album.

I was really happy with the "IS" cd also. I did the same thing and listened to the first disc a bunch and haven't really been able to give disc 2 much time. As far as Bennie Maupin is concerned, I was just checking the allmusic.com site for the albums he's appeared on. I've never heard his Jewel in the Lotus, but I'd like to. I know his work from the Herbie Hancock albums and I dig those. I didn't realize he was on Woody Shaw's Blackstone Legacy and Song of Songs. Those have been favorites for a long time. I'm also a big fan of Andrew Hill's One For One album. I see that he appears on that also. I think I need to spend some time listening to Bennie Maupin. :rsmile:

Boogaloo would be an interesting album of the week. It took me a little while to get into it at first. It wasn't what I had been expecting. I find myself digging those late sixties Patton albums more and more. I picked up a couple of the rare groove reissues on vinyl also, and I've been playing those a lot lately. I'd love to have some Patton as the AoTW This reminds me that we need to figure out next weeks Album of the Week. We've only got a day left. In the Lee Morgan AoTW thread, CJ nominated JoeG, so hopefully we'll have an album of the week for next week. We should get in the habit of nominating the next album chooser when we start the new thread for the week. I say we start a write in campaign to get JoeG to nominate Rooster Ties to pick the album of the week for April 27 - May 3. :rsmile:

Like a dummy, I signed up for emusic with my personal email address (the one I only give to friends). I haven't had any problems, either, with spam or my email address being given out by them. As far as the Verve and Impulse recordings being taken off the site. I checked the emusic forums and people have been asking about it, but the only comment from emusic that I found said that they "remove items from time to time" - so if you have emusic and you know there is something you want, I would suggest downloading it now. I've waited on things and have seen them disappear off their site. It's just a drag if you signed up because of the Vivendi offerings.

Clementine, You're right about that first Spectrum album. That is a great record. I only have it on vinyl. I've never seen it on cd. I think I need to make a digital transfer.....

Thanks for starting this thread, John! One thing I noticed recently is the fact that the Vivendi label stuff (Verve, Impulse, etc...) has been removed. I was saddened by this development. It is cool that they have a lot of the Atavistic label on their site. I've been exploring some of this stuff and it's interesting. My favorites are the Joe McPhee reissues. :rsmile:

Joe, Great story! I don't think you sound derivative at all. I'm not the biggest expert on organ trios, but I've never heard one like Organissimo. I think you guys have a foot in the past and a foot in the future. I have a buddy who's doing the organ trio thing. When I listen to his group's music, it seems like a bunch of rock and roll guys trying to do the jazz thing. It's just not authentic. When I listen to your cd, I feel like I'm listening to the real thing. Hopefully, you'll find some good management, I see no reason why you shouldn't be successful. :rsmile:

The pre-breakup album was Recurring. I never really got into it. I should re-listen to it. You could definitely see that the game was almost over for them. Thanks for the tip on the Deviants! I've never heard them before. I'll keep my eye out. As far as the Spectrum is concerned. Look for "Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)" - this album from 1992 is probably my favorite post-Spacemen release. Good insight on the Spiritualized albums, I feel the same way. I have to give Spacemen 3 for coming up with one of the greatest album titles ever: "Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To" :rsmile:

You're welcome! I hope you know I would tell you if I didn't like it. I think it's a drag when people tell me they like my music when I know they don't. Fortunately, I really like it! I really hope you guys can find some good management and..... My wife is from Michigan. She keeps trying to get me to go out there for a visit. Maybe I can do that sometime and get to see you guys live. I don't imagine you'll be coming out to California anytime soon. I hope the Metheny comparison is okay with you. That really was my initial thought upon hearing the album. I have been having fun trying to learn some of the guitar parts. My hands (and brain) are tired. :rsmile:

Thanks for the suggestions, John! I am on emusic - I'll go ahead and download what you suggested. Thanks for the tips on what to avoid. I hate when I'm listening to a band for the first time and I've picked the wrong album to start with. It's hard to get past an initial bad impression. I'm with you as far as Spacemen 3 and their offspring. I think I gave up on Sonic Boom after the second E.A.R. album. I last saw him play live in 1994. That was a pretty interesting show. The Spiritualized stuff is good. I've got all their albums, but I don't listen to them that much. After the band broke up, I enjoyed the Spectrum stuff the most. :rsmile:

John, I can't believe that we have three Spacemen 3 fans here. Usually when I mention them, I get a blank look from people. They were a huge influence on me musically for a long time. Playing With Fire is really good. I think both of these albums are essential. As far as Yo La Tengo is concerned, I haven't really given them a chance. Any recommendations on where to start? :rsmile:

Jazzmoose, You're not alone. I can just imagine the Teletubbies marketing people dosing their research subjects to see how the program played. Sort of a CIA MK-ULTRA program for the kids. I worry about my son's brain turning to mush from watching the show. I think mine has already. :rsmile:

It's nice to hear someone mention Spacemen 3. Back in the late 80's, I listened to them and the band Loop all the time. The Perfect Prescription was my favorite album, though Playing With Fire was a close second. :rsmile:

Thanks for asking B3-er! I don't have the cd with me right now, but when I do I'll sit down and write out my impressions. What I will say now is how much I am impressed by your individual playing on the cd. One thing my favorite albums have in common is that I can lock into what each of the different musicians is playing and enjoy the album on different levels. I feel the same way about your cd. Sometimes I just get really into the drums, other times really into the organ, etc..., and overall it's a great listen when I just focus on the whole thing. As a guitarist, I'm really impressed by Joe's playing. I don't know if this would be an accurate statement, but the first impression I had was this album is how it would sound if someone like Pat Metheny was playing in a smoking organ trio. I bought the cd because I appreciated what you had done in creating this board and I the mp3 files sounded good on this site. I was very surprised by how much I liked the album. You know how it is when you hear your friend's band. Usually, you try to find something to like about it. In Organissimo's case, I would dig this record even if I didn't know (or like) you guys. It really smokes. I don't know why people are buying Soulive when they can be buying your cd. If Tomatbluenote checks into this board, I would HIGHLY recommend he order a copy and then sign you guys up. :rsmile:
