  1. Those rap groups had cool production, I bet they used the samples in context with several other samples--such that it wasn't a total rip off job. In fact, I know Tribe did--"Oh My God" is on one of the best-produced rap albums ever.
  2. I friend of mine had some dope fiend break in his place and make off with about 500 DVDs. We assume it was a crackhead because that's all he took, he could have taken loads of expensive audio equipment. The DVDs are an easy trade for cash. 5000 cds would really be devastating.
  3. Don't think so. I think it may be considered too obvious, too sacred. One issue that is not often covered in sampling discussions--many of the records that get sampled are not exactly considered sacred in the jazz world. Lots of electric keys/synth/Bobbi Humprey/Bob James/CTI/disco type records or extremely obscure records. Only a corny DJ would sample obvious, big selling records. Look at all the fuss over the Beasties sampling James Newton. James who?
  4. McCoy Tyner? Sonny Rollins? Herbie Hancock? Bobby Hutcherson?
  5. The Governator is known to enjoy a cigar or two, though not in this image...
  6. This one's my favorite. I don't actually have their stuff, but my friend has all their records. I regrettably only have a few scattered tracks.
  7. The hell with evacuation, if I can't get it all out I'm going down with the ship.
  8. It's a really cool painting, that's for sure. Maybe the artist doesn't play the instrument he/she painted?
  9. Zoinks! That Zeppelin thing is spooky!
  10. Two Towers DVD Audio - my friends Jesse in New Line Home Entertainment and Brandt at Mi Casa Studio are responsible for that quality!
  11. I once ate a piece of chicken from a Panda Express that I'm not sure what was wrong with it. I knew something was wrong the minute I put it in my mouth and I spit it out. I guess it must have sat in their serving tray for a long time or something. I'd already eaten most of the serving, but stopped there. My stomach was a wreck for a week--all poisoned feeling.
  12. This just in...Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead. Whoops, wrong topic.
  13. I very rarely listen to the radio, but when I do KKJZ 88.1 Long Beach is where I tune first. I was actually listening to them until very late in the evening this last Saturday, and was suprised by some of the selections. Early in the evening someone was spinning EXCELLENT soul like OV Wright and Charles Wright--one great track after another. Then later in the evening someone played decent soul jazz tracks but some questionable remix tracks (like some butchered Cal Tjader). Usually when I tune in KKJZ has straight up jazz playing, I'd never listened on a Saturday night. I imagine those remix tracks would really piss some off if they didn't do it for me. Overall, I liked what they played.
  14. Mine arrived yesterday afternoon as well, thanks Tom! One of the tracks on disc 2 really stands out to me, I'll let you know which one in the discussion. Not much I recognized, not much I didn't enjoy...
  15. Nope, he was a non-factor.
  16. I dig Hall & Oates AND Simon & Garfunkel.
  17. Yeah, she's hit and miss. But when she was on, she was FUNKY! I dig tunes like "Black-Eyed Blues," "Disposable Society," and her cover of Gil-Scott Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is."
  18. Esther is cool! My favorites so far are From A Whisper To A Scream, Black Eyed Blues, and Performance.
  19. And I hate the Raiders. I hate 'em, but your boys are no joke. Still shocked they added Dillon this year...scary.
  20. Chuck clips his own fades and keeps them real tight and straight. He also creases his khakis and has "Nessa" tattooed on his neck in Old English. I tip, but I go to Supercuts. Then I go home, get out a pair of scissors and my clippers and try to fix the damage.
  21. "You're listening to your Grandfather's music." That's what my Mom says if I play the oldest ends of my collection while she's around. My late Grandpa played clarinet and liked jazz though he didn't collect. I never got to speak with him about jazz. My Mom listens to the worst music imaginable--I think she likes to relate to my nieces who are 11 and 9. Dreck beyond your worst nightmares, Hootie & The Blowfish and Hillary Duff type stuff. My Dad prefers silence. Maybe it skips a generation. Doesn't it seem like most people are really in a hurry to decide what is good and bad music, even before actually listening? They want to narrow it down to one genre as quickly as possible.
  22. Raider fan with low hopes here. I picked the Pats for tonight's game. I hate the Pats.
  23. Dentist bills are definitely steep. My extraction will cost me $200 and I have good coverage.
  24. I actually prefer Carney's to Tommy's. The yellow train car on Sunset east of Tower Records. If you head into Burbank, you may want to check out Atomic Records on Magnolia just west of Hollywood Way.
  25. Bobo (William Correa) is better known for his timbales and drumset playing, he was in Tito Puente's Orchestra at the same time as Mongo, to play bongos, or timbales, whenever Tito played vibes or marimba. Among timbale players, I personally rate Willie Bobo before Tito Puente, other top timbaleros would be Carmelo Garcia, Steve Berrios, Changuito, Humberto Morales, ...... Whoops, thanks for the correction and insight Mike.
