  1. DISC TWO 1. I like how the drummer changes it up, schwinging schtuff. Dunno. 2. Bud Powell? 3. Boisterously thumping fun track. No complaints, no clue. 4. Count Basie? Wild guess. 5. Awesome. The instrumental section in the middle is phenomenal, not that I dislike the singing. Can't say I know. 6. Jay McShann & His Orchestra featuring Charlie Parker - "Swingmatism." (*pumps fist and does victory lap around house*). 7. From celebration to frustration, this is another one I have and can't remember what it is. 8. Fletcher Henderson? More wild guessing. 9. Dark and menacing at first, then nicely swinging. I dig it. 10. This cat is playing the hell out of his bass. Madman. I've heard this tune performed by others. 11. Coltrane? 12. Lionel Hampton? 13. Tal Farlow? 14. A nice latin rhythm. I found the piano player a little heavy handed at first, then it didn't bother me all that much. Not bad. 15. I likes em slow, but just don't know. Kenny Burrell? 16. DKDC 17. Cal Tjader? 18. Stephane Grappelli? 19. Gene Krupa? 20. Killer blues tune. I'll be interested to learn who this is. 21. Cal Tjader again? 22. Heart-wrenching, I love it. Haven't the foggiest notion. 23. Damn, I know this tune. I've got someone else doing this song. I like this singing, hip stuff. Reminds me of King Pleasure.
  2. Huge thanks to Mike Weil for the fine array of tunes, continuing the standard of excellence in the praiseworthy tradition that is Organissimo Blindfold Test. BFT#18 Compiled by Mike Weil DISC ONE 1. Lem Winchester? 2. A little too wacky for my tastes. Don't know. 3. I can guess it is a newer organ player, but not much more. DeFrancesco maybe? 4. Charles Earland? I think I might have this. 5. DKDC 6. Bill Evans? Keith Jarrett? 7. No guess, but I dig it! 8. Pat Martino? 9. Sample originally appeared on Jeru's "The Bitches," DJ Premier. Kind of cheesey to me. 10. Vocalese "Sidewinder," I was pissed I didn't spot the song until the dude started singing "Sidewinder." Somewhat misses the mark for me. 11. Reminds me of Bjork's "Cover Me" from the album Post. Slow and meditative...Alice Coltrane, perhaps? 12. Cool, somehow not as wacky as track 2...wtf, beat box? Who is this, Doug E. Fresh? Biz Markie? Rahzel? The noisemaking dude from Police Academy and Spaceballs? I like this one a lot.
  3. 28 I was almost three months old when this favorite of mine was recorded...
  4. I've been diggin' some Les McCann too, Evan. 32Jazz stuff. Pete LaRoca Sims as well.
  5. I really enjoy the soundtrack from Shawshank, particularly the scenes where Morgan Freeman's character Red is walking in Buxton and narrating.
  6. Clifford Brown - The Complete Blue Note & Pacific Jazz Recordings James Moody - James Moody Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie Jimmy Smith - Rockin' The Boat Cannonball Adderley with Bill Evans - Know What I Mean? (Remastered) Big haul from BMG. All for under $40!
  7. Diggin' in Grandma's crate... Holy smokes, this "Many Moods Of Harry Belafonte" record is outta control.
  8. Out of the clear blue sky my Aunt Sharon from St. Louis dropped off two containers of records that belonged to my late Grandmother. For the most part I'm not all that interested in the titles. However, what there is is in fantastic condition. The prize of the batch is playing now, "Satchmo," Louis Armstrong's Greatest Hits. Produced by Armstrong himself, this accompanied his Signet Book autobiography. I'm not all that excited about getting a greatest hits compilation, but what's cool is the record sleeve was still turned sideways inside and revealed a brand new record. I'm the first to ever play it, but it must be over 30 years old! Catchy batch of tunes, some funny spoken moments from Armstrong. Really weird stuff in these crates, totally bizarre. Volumes 1-12 of "Golden Records Library: A Musical Heritage For Young America." The Harmonicats. Dancing At El Morrocco. Boston Pops Orchestra. A General MacArthur speech. The United States Bill Of Rights. Dan Dailey "Mr. Musical Comedy" (I shit you not)... 78s - Waltzes Of Vienna, Three Suns Moods, Bud Roman, Les Anthony, The Rhythmaires "Ballad Of Davy Crocket w/ Sheri Lynn "It May Sound Silly." Earl Sheldon...very cool to me to see Grandma had records, I never knew her. Anyway that's my fun for the evening, a bunch of dusty records.
  9. My top fast food eateries are: Baja Fresh In-N-Out Burger There is no comparison to the above two. All other fast food companies wilt before their quality. Other favorites: El Pollo Loco Carney's Pavilions Deli
  10. Wow, I'll want this one. I've got some super funky Joseph Henry tracks on some compilations somewhere, I'm sure it is more of the same! Edit: That's right, I have Spike's Choice, The Desco Funk 45 Collection featuring "I Feel Right" and "Who's The King?" The latter track I was familiar with from the Funk Spectrum series of compilations.
  11. Thanks for the laughs Rodney, RIP.
  12. I wouldn't have considered Jimmy Smith "polished" in anything but a positive way. "Polished" technique for improvising raw, funky jazz. Just got Home Cookin', and it cooks.
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. Happy Birthday Marcus!
  15. Suprise suprise. Kerry Collins is still Kerry Collins. The Raiders played a miserable one Sunday. Football is like torture for me to watch these days.
  16. I read those artist posts that only get a few replies, if it makes a difference. They're not going to waste! I just don't want to chime in with another of my "duh I don't have it but it sounds cool and I might buy it" type posts, I do enough of those.
  17. Inspired by this thread, I listened to Jackie's Bag several times last night and once this morning. For some reason this one did not resonate with me immediately in the first few listens, but last night I was really digging it! I wonder how I didn't hear it the same the first few times, very puzzling. I agree with Gary, I really enjoy Donald Byrd's playing in this context. I'll also echo that the bonus tracks with Tina Brooks are excellent, I particularly like "Street Singer." Kenny Drew's playing on "A Ballad For Doll" stands out to me as well.
  18. FWIW, I voted no. I agree that the Funny Rat thread is too cumbersome, much like the eai threads at Jazz Corner. I'd rather see separate discussion threads, "Corners" for major artists and more specific topics.
  19. ...but it ain't about Organissimo the band. http://www.calendarlive.com/ Someone will pay dearly for this.
  20. I say yes. We need a place for those people. Avante garde weirdos! They're all alike.
  21. Hope you have a great one!
  22. I'm a fan of Bjork, Primus, and early RHCP (particularly the George Clinton stuff)... ...but I am useless to you in this discussion since I haven't studied music in that way. Back to school.
  23. Happy Birthday!
  24. Great movie, women and men should both like it.
  25. Hey Wheel, Horace Silver's Serenade To A Soul Sister and Tony Williams' Life Time have both been reissued, they're both recent additions to my collection.
