Sports: 2009/10 NBA & NCAA Basketball Season
Noj replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Cleveland fans already feel betrayed, since none of the big-name free agents have signed with the Cavs and LeBron didn't recruit so much as delay his decision until it was too late. He hamstrung the organization with this "circus." I imagine that makes him a villain to some no matter what. If he joins Miami, in my opinion he's joining D.Wade's team, to operate under D.Wade's leadership as a proven winner, essentially demoting himself from his leadership role. If he joins New York, his team will be about the 4th best in the East and perhaps no better than Chicago, with Boston, Orlando, and now Miami all looking stronger. His best bet is to join the Clippers, where he'll have a young, balanced core of players far from those he betrayed in Cleveland. -

Unforgettable TV shows or moments

Not a show I watched religiously, but there was an episode of The Sopranos in which the mobsters killed the son's girlfriend for being an informant, and she figured out she was about to get wacked in the car ride. Horrifying. In fact, even as realistic and palpable as that drama was, it's the sort of thing that made me not want to watch the show. No thank you. -

Still have my older brother's copy, and we quote that same line all the time.

At the beginning, when I knew almost none of the players, I started buying things from various series of reissues. The Blue Note Rare Groove series and RVG series and Connoisseur series, the Fantasy Legends Of Acid Jazz Series, the CTI series with the lime green cardboard digipacks, the 32 Jazz stuff...pretty much all bought semi-blind. Prior to that I bought a bunch of compilations in an attempt to learn names I might be interested in. Then I found this Blue Note Bulletin Board with a bunch of loons who knew everything about every jazz recording which ever happened, and soon I knew every time I bought an album it would be a great one.

I have a compilation called Eat To The Beat which features many of the tracks mentioned here. Love it! It's funny, there's tons of blues/r&b/pop/whatever songs that are obviously about sex. Throw a dirty word in the mix, and be obvious about the subject, suddenly it's a nasty song! Here's a song which involves inviting a girl over for sex, chatter about knowing how to put it down in bed, and getting her to cheat on her man...but it's slightly less obvious, so I guess that means it's not dirty. Or was this considered a dirty song back then?

Really? That would put him 14 ahead of Bill Russell. Kobe hate is so played out. -

Rape is so bizarre. I mean, the whole fun is that she wants to. It's sad that it has to come to this. Too many dirtbags in the world. Sounds like a worthwhile invention, if enough women need to defend themselves. Now if they'll just invent a trigger that summons lightning bolts to strike the sick bastards who mutilate girls with that female circumcision stuff.

Man, there's so many bad calls throughout a game it's tough to put too much weight on any one of them. I will say the refs clearly had an agenda, in every game. Worst game the Lakers played all year, save the run that got them the lead in the 4th. Stifling defense from the Celts, who never showed an ounce of quit. The Lakers are my team and have been my whole life, so I'm stoked to see them get another title. I have little doubt the Celtics would have won had Perkins not gotten injured. Condolences, Boston fans! That was an unlucky break. -
For those who have listed artists, is there any one song or group of songs by each artist which is an exception to your overall impression of their discography? McLean's "Poor Eric" or Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" or Lou Donaldson "One Cylinder" are personal favorites of mine, and even if I find other tunes boring/grating/etc. there's always those peak tracks. I'm sure that's true for every artist here...isn't it?

Not sure how I'd respond in this thread. I have a tons of albums that I neglect...but when I come back to 'em I'm glad I have 'em. All the same I tend to keep coming back to favorite tracks more than anything else. Those perfect moments where the melodies and solos come together so strong. I'm more sporadically "left cold" than anything I could blame on any one musician.

Buying New Clothes? Make Sure To Wash Them!

Wow, I'm always disgusted enough as it is with the people who take stuff off the rack and don't hang it back up, dropping it in the aisle like the servants in the store are supposed to follow them around and tidy up. Nose blowing? Unreal. As an aside, I went to the reggae festival at UCLA yesterday (Barrington Levy!), and was disgusted by how many left trash all over the field at the close. I mean, who does that? I always clean up after myself...anywhere. -
When I was unemployed I worked for UPS as a driver-helper during the holiday season. For the most part packages were OK'd to be dropped on porches, but with very expensive items signatures were required. Signatures had to be obtained from a person over 18. Under no circumstances did the drivers I worked for drop packages at the wrong address, that's for certain. And, we were required to loudly say "UPS" as we approached the porch, and to ring the doorbell if there was one to ring or knock. Other instructions included dropping the packages where they couldn't be seen from the street, if possible. A few houses had special instructions for packages, and I was told to follow those instructions. One customer had a locker thing in his back yard we were asked to put the packages inside of, and of course we did. I think you just got unlucky with a slacker driver, J.H.. He won't last long, the guys I worked with were under strict protocol and worked their asses off. We were once secretly followed and observed by a manager of sorts, who made sure things were being done by the book.

I tend to fall in line with Dan, generally speaking. There's so much "in" music I love that I see no need to venture "out," and would rather listen to other "in" genres than to follow jazz "out." All the same, I have given a bunch of Ornette Coleman a try and found some of it beautiful, so I know there's a "there" there. LOL at Chris' comment at the youtube link. The kid's so full of himself in his comments. It puts me off more than his attempt at music.
