Buying New Clothes? Make Sure To Wash Them!
Noj replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Wow, I'm always disgusted enough as it is with the people who take stuff off the rack and don't hang it back up, dropping it in the aisle like the servants in the store are supposed to follow them around and tidy up. Nose blowing? Unreal. As an aside, I went to the reggae festival at UCLA yesterday (Barrington Levy!), and was disgusted by how many left trash all over the field at the close. I mean, who does that? I always clean up after myself...anywhere. -
When I was unemployed I worked for UPS as a driver-helper during the holiday season. For the most part packages were OK'd to be dropped on porches, but with very expensive items signatures were required. Signatures had to be obtained from a person over 18. Under no circumstances did the drivers I worked for drop packages at the wrong address, that's for certain. And, we were required to loudly say "UPS" as we approached the porch, and to ring the doorbell if there was one to ring or knock. Other instructions included dropping the packages where they couldn't be seen from the street, if possible. A few houses had special instructions for packages, and I was told to follow those instructions. One customer had a locker thing in his back yard we were asked to put the packages inside of, and of course we did. I think you just got unlucky with a slacker driver, J.H.. He won't last long, the guys I worked with were under strict protocol and worked their asses off. We were once secretly followed and observed by a manager of sorts, who made sure things were being done by the book.

I tend to fall in line with Dan, generally speaking. There's so much "in" music I love that I see no need to venture "out," and would rather listen to other "in" genres than to follow jazz "out." All the same, I have given a bunch of Ornette Coleman a try and found some of it beautiful, so I know there's a "there" there. LOL at Chris' comment at the youtube link. The kid's so full of himself in his comments. It puts me off more than his attempt at music.

I have this one TTK, relatively inexpensive, surprisingly good sound, and travels well.

Getting rid of that gosh darned Facebook!
Noj replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm fairly certain there is a way to delete an account, but if not I'm sure it's possible to log in to Facebook and adjust the preferences to not receive emails of any sort. It works similar to the way the automatic email function for private messages works here at org. -
I like good music in any genre

Hahaha, I like that title track. It's corny, but it's funky. -

Noj replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One of the things I've noticed in music of all genres is that there are tons of musicians with smaller discographies who still have these amazing moments/tracks that reach peaks of the same height as the most famous artists with giant discographies. Those "lightning in a bottle," inspired songs. With jazz, there's a few names that are known in popular culture. However, everyone here knows the genre is incredibly deep with countless talented contributors. It tends to work that way with every genre, and I've noticed that people who claim to only like a few genres will recognize certain hit songs from a wide variety of genres. Their professed tastes and strict genre barriers don't actually represent all the music they consider good. Being totally honest with myself, I found that even popular songs which I have an adverse reaction to I can still understand their appeal. For example, my mother listens to country pop hits and American Idol winners, and just through passing contact with the music she plays I totally get it. Or I hear some raunchy club rap song my niece likes...and I get it. It's not my bag, but I get it. -

There's gems in all the genres (and I collect in a whole bunch), and finding the diamonds in the rough is my goal. I "trim the fat" on my iPod, identifying the best songs and weeding out the garbage. The process isn't foolproof, at times I've junked songs off the iPod only to hear them again later on and think, "why isn't that on my iPod?" So while I put up with a whole lot of what others would consider crap, I'm in the process of whittling it all down. The only problem is my gathering has out-paced my discerning process. Can't know they're crummy 'til you've heard 'em, and usually there's something which leads to giving 'em a listen to begin with. -
Did you make sure there are no spaces being added between tracks? Disc-burning software such as iTunes will add 1-2 seconds between tracks unless set up to not do so. Also, listen for moments when the tracks themselves have been book-ended by silence which can be trimmed off. 2mb is quite a bit over, though.

Sin & Soul is great! I love his vocal version of "Dat Dere" (I often want to hear it after hearing the Timmons or Blakey instrumental), "Hazel's Hips," "Somebody Buy Me A Drink," and "Humdrum Blues." Wish I could help you with your question about "Watermelon Man," zanonespueblo.

Noj replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Announcements
Randy's killin it on the whole disc! Awesome mix and sound for a live disc, great job all around. All three of them are! So enjoyable, start to finish. The closing track, "Pumpkin Pie," is an amazingly beautiful performance. -

I feel like Tiger has apologized way more than necessary, and in my opinion he doesn't owe the public anything. The media and everybody watching should keep their noses out of his business and move on. I could stomach about five minutes of this crap on the TV before I was repulsed, particularly by anyone who saw fit to say Tiger "wasn't sincere enough" or pretending to have some sort of insight into what Tiger means and what he doesn't mean or how much emotion he ought to show. People make me sick, twittering shit about this guy like they've got any place making any comments. Why the media has seen fit to feel involved with or have any right to know about the personal business of celebrities is beyond me. Get a life.

I've had this weird issue with artwork. Suddenly Quasimoto came up with the artwork for a Horace Silver album. I was like, wtf? There are two places for artwork to display, at least when using Cover Flow: in cover flow itself and in the lower left of the iTunes window ("Now Playing"). "Now Playing" will display the cover associated with that particular track (so it's on a per-track basis). Cover Flow will display the cover associated with the first track of the album (so, while it's also on a per-track basis, the track may not be what is playing). So for Quasimoto, 1) look at the cover displayed under "Now Playing," and 2) look at what album it came from, then look at the first track on that album. These should give you some clues. This has to do with compilations. If you choose a track from one of those artists who are not listed under artists, and open the information for that track, you'll probably see "Part of a compilation" checked. This means that this track is filed by iTunes under the album name, rather than the artist. iTunes does this so that, when you play a "Various Artists" album, it will play the album as it was originally presented. But iTunes will also list that track if you search by the artist. I have noticed when ripping albums to iTunes, there are times that it indicates "Compilation: yes" when it shouldn't. I try to look for that and correct it before the rip occurs. But you can also correct it afterwards. For the artwork problem, I'm actually positive that the wrong artwork has somehow populated the wrong album, so it's a somewhat more vexing issue without a user error explanation. Thanks for the tip on the "part of a compilation" checkbox, though.

The other problem I've had with my iPod is not all the artists will be listed under artists, but I'll be able to find it in a playlist. Again, wtf? Those are the only two bugs I've encountered. Otherwise it works well.

No. I think the Doors are great because they wrote a number of terrific songs and left a legacy of fantastic live and studio recordings. It just so happens that their recordings were made at an amazing boom-time for music in general, so something feeling "dated" to that era only means associating The Doors with greatness, as far as I'm concerned. However, I agree with you completely that "everyone's entitled to their own tastes in music" and your distaste for The Doors is perfectly justified, by your own criteria.

The Who, Janet Jackson's titty...what's the difference? Both are well past their prime. What current act would have been more relevant? Some severely auto-tuned Miami-style booty track? Perhaps they could have brought out Queen Latifah and that Grammy-laden American Idol detritus they had butcher the national anthem for an encore. In all fairness, I was watching the SB with a bunch of drunk 40-somethings and they were all STOKED on The Who. One guy had his air guitar working OT, along with some energetic leg kicks. Many exchanged words on how good the Who still sounded, and one even went so far as to say, "best SB half time show ever."

"Dated" never works as a criticism to me, considering that when something was recorded isn't a part of my criteria for judging music. The era that the Doors come from is overwhelmingly great, in practically every genre.
