  2. Can't beat the original open-source FLAC frontend: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
  3. Go have a sandwich at Charlie Parker's.
  4. You didn't ask, but ... Maybe I'd just buy it for myself. That's not weird or anything, is it?
  5. I've been trying to round up the individual volumes for a long time. Now I don't have to.
  6. There's a beautiful lost story there. Now I'll be thinking about Johnny Cadillac for days.
  7. So skip the middleman and get them direct from the nonprofit newworldrecords.org.
  8. It helps to work for a newspaper. And then make sure the judge sees you chatting with your paper's courthouse reporter. This has gotten me out of jury duty twice.
  9. A musician friend recalls being auditioned and hired for Stanley's band by Carpenter, weeks before he ever met Stanley.
  10. I have a hard time finding good performances of this piece, where the sections need to truly interlock and form a dramatic arc. Fortunately, this is one of the good ones.
  11. Those so-and-sos at UMG think of everything... Sonny Salad Artist Page
  12. Ordered the '74 Road Trips last Thursday, and it arrived Monday, no problem. Except for some glue on one of the discs. I've been enjoying the Des Moines show in boot form for years.
  13. Back to Earl Plays Duke for a minute. Is this really a reissue? These things have been continuously available from New World Records for a long time. The label is run as a nonprofit, the customer service is very good, and the discount for ordering a whole lot of CDs is just dandy. Hint hint.
  14. Maybe they've been redone with better transfers. Somebody needs to buy them and lend them to me so I can find out...
  15. Have you heard these editions yet? They might be needle drops of questionable quality. A few years back I bought a CD of the MPS album from the fan club, and I'm really disappointed in the sound and surface noise.
  16. FWIW, I liked Wald's book on de-mythologizing Robert Johnson. If the first post in this thread accurately reflects the premise of the new book, count me out. It took four young guys from England to widen a black-white schism in America?
  17. No. I'm just trying to re-invent myself as a singer-songwriter.
  18. Pepper Adams was a heck of a good composer under the radar. "Now In Our Lives," "Reflectory," "Julian"... Once saw a TV film of Oscar Peterson playing an Easter suite he had composed. And quite a few compositions surface on his late recordings. I get the feeling he was a closet composer.
  19. Ray Stevens Andy Williams Shoji Tabuchi
  20. I'd disagree. It was extremely lackluster.
  21. Minority opinion: "Survivors" on Soul Note. Half is an ambitious drums-and-string-quartet piece. Half is unaccompanied, unadulterated Max.
  22. You'll find a lot of the discographic info duplicated here.
  23. Music that isn't a cue stick is evil.
