  1. I agree. The sound is nasal and quite ugly, and range of expression us much narrower than with tenor. "My Favorite Things" album is probably my least favorite thing Coltrane recorded. The solos are sort of ornamental and very repetitive (and Tyner's solo on the title track is not much to talk about either), and I remember on "Every Time We Say Goodbye" the horn sounded rather out of tune. This is a tough horn to make sound good, and to my ears it did not work out for Coltrane. There were and are more interesting soprano saxophone players around.
  2. Fell / Comte - Panazol. Excellent stuff.
  3. Fantastic performance of great music.
  4. I have a few of his older CDs (Triage on Okka, and something else), I think I even saw him live once (with Vandermark), and found him nothing special. But the tracks posted in the article sound really good. Will buy a couple of downloads. And it is great what he's doing in the music community, this is a lot of work, I guess.
  5. My favorite Mosaic, highly recommended.
  6. Sad to hear about Mr. Neidlinger's death. What an excellent musician. Releases on his K2B2 label are very enjoyable. Hope the distribution does not fold down with his passing.

    Funny Rat

This was a fun thread. I have not listened to Herr Brötzmann in years, but right now I am listening to Jeff Platz / Kit Demos / John McLellan "On Pulsar": I did not know of Jeff Platz, but I was looking for something featuring very interesting drummer John McLellan (who sadly passed away since this thread started). Very happy I stumbled upon this trio recording, McLellan's playing is fascinating. John (or Johnny) McLellan can be heard on an outstanding duo CD with Joe McPhee 'Grand Marquis' (on Boxholder). I would probably disavow half of the recommendations I made in this thread back in the day, but 'Grand Marquis' is still one of my favorite Joe McPhee's recordings - 14 years after I mentioned it hear.
  8. "I never go back to Europe!!!" Great CD, got it accidentally 15 years ago, have been listening to it regularly with pleasure. The guitarist on it, Giancarlo Nicolai, is outstanding. He had a couple of good records on Leo, but "Tomorrow" has his best playing (from what what I've heard, at least). Don't have anything else by Schärli, need to get me some, I guess.
  9. I think a genius creates something radically new, something beyond what has even been considered possible before them. Geniuses, be definition, are extremely rare. I would consider just a few in music overall to be geniuses: Monteverdi, Bach, Stravinsky, Ravel, Stockhausen, Scelsi, Monk, Captain Beefheart, John Butcher. Maybe: Ellington, Zappa, the Beatles as collective genius, Erwin Schulhoff.

    Don Preston

Don Preston Trio has a good CD on Cryptogramophone called "Transformation" with a poignant rendition of Zappa's "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue":
  11. Don't want to get too much into discussing the unfortunate and unnecessarily public Dweezil / Zappa Family Trust conflict, but if you delve into the details a bit, it's not about ZFT prohibiting Dweezil to perform Frank Zappa's music. It's about Dweezil selling Zappa-themed merchandise at his concerts with proceeds not flowing to ZFT as they were supposed to as per old Dweezil / ZFT agreement. If I remember correctly, the ZFT offer was that if Dweezil honors the merchandise agreement he gets the right to use the Zappa name (trademarked by ZFT) to promote his concerts for a fee of one dollar per year.
  12. Selling the Audio Wave XRCD edition of this item: https://www.discogs.com/release/5042906 , remastered by Alan Yoshida. Still sealed. Price: 23.90 euro with shipping to Europe, 28.90 euro with shipping elsewhere.
  13. I might be tempted. There is a lot of dross in Breuker's released output, but his best stuff is quite phenomenal, and if this set is well compiled, it might be worth it.
  14. All (or most) ICP albums - including the Nichols / Monk one - are available on Spotify.
  15. I an in total agreement with Jim on "Hot Rats" - and yes, I can't stand "Peaches..." either. I think the best track on the album is the last one, "It Must be a Camel", it has some very interesting harmony there. Having said this, it is important to keep in mind that Zappa made an enormous leap as a guitar soloist around '74, so his blues lick-infested and repetitive soloing on Hot Rats is not representative of his guitar improvisation prowess .
  16. In addition to Humphrey, Zappa's other drummers, Terry Bozzio and Chad Wakerman, attended Ellis clinics and workshops. Vinnie Colaiuta, another Zappa's drummer, mentioned that attending Don Ellis Big Band concert as a child was a formative experience for him. Trombonist Glenn Ferris and bassist Dave Parlato played with both Ellis and Zappa. And Ellis played on Zappa's "Absolutely Free". Otherwise, no connection.
  17. Perhaps "Meat Light", the expanded / remastered edition of "Uncle Meat"? https://www.amazon.com/Meat-Light-Uncle-Project-Object/dp/B01M69ONQZ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487552122&sr=8-1&keywords=zappa+meat
  18. You can buy a download (presumably from McPhee directly) via Bandcamp: https://joemcphee.bandcamp.com/album/joe-mcphee-trio-impressions-of-jimmy-giuffre
  19. I am selling a new copy of the Melodiya 100th Anniversary Edition set:

  22. Very saddened by this news. A wonderful under-appreciated musician, and at 59 way too young to go. He's been living here in Austria for some time, but to my regret I never caught him live.
  23. I like Dantone playing Handel's keyboard works: https://play.spotify.com/album/6hZOVR3LlTMnn6fOS3lxw9 and https://play.spotify.com/album/1Bzb6iWyuTdHf7bsyt7uVn
  24. I guess your point is that Moore is not particularly overlooked. Maybe. OK, here's some more: Christine Abdelnour Urs Leimgruber Wally Shoup Biggi Vinkeloe Lotte Anker Jean-Luc Guionnet Michael Lewis
  25. Yes, these Liebner discs are excellent. I like the Tilbury set as well.
