  3. I'm late, too -- hope you had a happy day, Larry!
  4. Yes, OUTRAGE!!! Is Nader gonna form a new party with PETA to sweep DC clean of these companion-animal-abusing monsters???
  5. Maren, is that coming from Queens or Brooklyn? Lower East Side (Manhattan)! 20 years ago my gigs were at CBGB!
  6. Yet another cake, with love from couw & maren:
  7. I'm about to get all nerdy on you, John! But I'm guessing it's a French-based transliteration device (especially given the whole French-Russian connection: arts, royalty, Faberge eggs, ballet, L'Hermitage, etc.) Because if Shostakovich is Chostakovich in French (the French "ch" is an English "sh": "chef" "choucroute" "chevalier") -- then how, in French, do you indicate what English speakers think of as a "ch" sound? It's harder at the start, a little explosive: position your tongue to say "t" but finish it off with "sh": "tsharlie parker" "tshet baker" "get me to the tshurtsh on time"
  8. Thanks Dan (and Rachel and PhillyQ -- and JazzMoose from the original "Spam" thread)! Most of the time, F train to the corner of 57th and 7th...
  9. Aww... indeed! I mean, what else can you say? I love the "praying for peace + $1,000,000" pose! And Zora's sweet profile being kissed by Uncle Randy... And the whole family! Aww...
  10. I trust your "please don't post" request can accommodate yet another poster saying: Wow -- these are beautiful!
  11. Up, 'cause it's this Friday. Just trying to keep our group afloat!
  12. 739? (Oh, I feel so cheap -- trying to redeem myself by confessing this as an edit, not post #740)
  13. This board is making me hungry!!! Late last night it was the catfish, now I need ogre-sized M&Ms!!!
  14. Happy birthday, Charlie! And I hope the whole family has a great time on your trip to the Northwest!
  15. And the cake has been baked! With love from couw & maren:
  16. Has 89 arrived? The party's all planned:
  17. Yeah, with HUNG as a last name, I'm sure he gets alot of jokes. From this week's Village Voice:
  18. Very interesting to me how many people thought #6 (Brandon Ross, recorded in 1978) sounded like Cassandra Wilson -- when in fact Brandon was musical director of Cassandra's backing bands from 1993 ("New Moon Daughter" release) through 1998!
  19. Here is the gist of that update, a note to JazzTimes from Adam Mansbach, co-author of Elvin Jones' forthcoming memoirs: I just called Keiko after reading your email. Elvin is alive and recuperating. I was at Yoshi's with him all week, and while he was weak and has lost weight (and had difficulty playing at some points), the whole experience was, for me, tremendously uplifting: To see him walk onstage with an oxygen tank and proceed to not only play an entire set, but also an amazing fifteen-minute solo while the room was being cleared (as he did on two of the nights) was truly inspiring. Set by set, there was a lot of variation in terms of Elvin's strength -- largely due to whether or not he had the oxygen with him, which he only did about half the time. A lot of the reports circulating have seemingly been from people who only saw one set and thus didn't really get a full picture. Elvin is certainly in very grave condition, but he's still full of tremendous love -- for the music and for life -- and that, along with his many friends and loved ones, seems to be keeping him going. --Adam
  20. Right online here is a transcription of Dave Holland's solo version of "Mr. PC" from his 1995 CD Ones All. That was with just one "Google." I think a transcription of Paul Chambers playing "Mr. PC" is in "Walking in the Footsteps of Paul Chambers" by Rob Gourlay (~$14). Then, there are transcriptions of OTHER Paul Chambers' solos online all over the place, like HERE, HERE and HERE.
  21. The metrical/rhyme schemes packed in that sentence are stunning, PQ!
  22. Two ways: you can link to a picture that appears on another website (and it will appear here) or you can attach a JPEG (.jpg) file (maybe GIF files too?). Here's how I link (using Windows/PC, not Mac): Look for an image you want on the web (google image search can be good, but you have to click on the thumbnail to take you to the real image; you can't link to the thumbnail). Look for an image you want on the web (google image search can be good, but you have to click on the thumbnail to take you to the real image; you can't link to the thumbnail). Right-click on the image: then click "Properties" on the menu that pops up. "Properties" gives you the address (URL) of the picture. Highlight this address and hit "Control C" to copy it. Go back to your Organissimo Post and click "IMG" (gray box above your post). It will tell you to "enter your URL" -- if you hit "Control V" the URL you copied will be pasted into the slot. Then click "OK", and your linked image should appear in your post when you preview or post it. Voila -- Melba Liston. To attach a file (<100K, from your own computer), scroll to the BOTTOM of your post, where you'll see "File Attachments" and an open box -- click on the gray box to the right that says "Browse..." and find the file you want to attach. Click "open" -- and then post your message. [To save a photo you found on the web to your own files, right-click on the web image and click "Save Picture As" instead of "Properties" -- then you can play with the image and attach your doctored version -- do you think couw and I are really baking all those cakes for Deus? ]
  23. with love from couw & maren: (Deus = Crist, Crist = Deus???)
