  1. I do recall that, yeah. I'm not on FB but glad he's safe!
  2. Hoping board members impacted by the fires are all right. Have friends who have evacuated and one, as far as I know, who lost it all (but he and family are safe). Absolutely terrible situation. LA lifer buddy says he's never seen anything like this, ever.
  3. sure do. Interesting news.
  4. Right, another user provided some insight on the broadcast differences to me over email earlier. So the TV program and the radio session would be different days, and different performances, and this new release will contain alternate audio.
  5. NPR has their own archive, but I'm not sure how far back it goes in-house. I knew a couple archivists there, though they've moved on to other institutions. It seemed like they've been an extremely thorough operation but as an archivist myself I can tell you that once layers of the onion get peeled back, surprises (both good and bad) are prevalent.
  6. Thanks for this. I know the photos/circumstances but hadn't seen the clip of "Salt Peanuts" with Carter... wow.
  7. Yeah, that makes total sense.
  8. yeah. I assume Flashpoint was abbreviated to match the NDR TV program, and this is a bit more expanded. Either way, I'm glad this is coming out and will keep both in the overstuffed racks
  9. Huh. Well, the Bandcamp credits list the recording date as April 18, 1969, which corresponds with the earlier Flashpoint so there must be some overlap at least.
  10. Sad to report that the songwriter, poet, and visual artist Ed Askew died last night at age 84; he had been ill. Source: a mutual friend who collaborated with Ed and assisted him greatly in his later years. Ed's music can be heard to great and nuanced advantage on recordings for ESP-Disk', De Stijl, Drag City, Tin Angel, and a bevy of self-released cassettes and CDs. I was very lucky to get to see Ed numerous times over the years and work on the rerelease of his ESP debut for Tin Angel Records. Many fond memories are coming back right now of various hangs, gigs, meals, drinks, and good times with Ed and his bandmates. His music had a great impact on the underground singer songwriter community in New York and beyond. I remember watching the below in a rented theater in Minneapolis in the early 00s, probably right around the time he played at the Empty Bottle in Chicago (2005). He's playing a Martin tiple. The uploader has broken up the video into three parts.
  11. Yeah, I have (and think I reviewed) the old one. The DVD is awesome! also, FWIW Erich Kleinschuster and Fritz Pauer are Austrian.
  12. ditto, terrible news. I also liked his films; Horse Girl was particularly good.
  13. Oh dang, checked the website. It does seem like they went belly-up!! Unfortunate, especially for those who paid upfront.
  14. A great player whose artistry coursed throughout much of my listening. Glad to have seen him a couple of times, including a solo release concert for his final ECM solo album, though I didn't actually get the opportunity to speak with or thank him. I think he moved to Las Cruces a year or two ago. RIP.
  15. Nice! I have this music as Big Stuff on New Jazz (same session). Love it.
  16. I agree with all of this. I stopped reviewing in maybe 2018 for a variety of reasons, but I still write about music. Hopefully some of the personality, facts, and word-pictures still come through. It's definitely not something that comes easily for most people.
  17. Unfortunate that they haven't sent you anything at all. I'm sure you could do a chargeback and get your card credited. I haven't ordered the final batch and will wait until Dusty Groove gets 'em.
  18. I love that record. All the Tyler albums are at least good but this one is quite special.
  19. born on the same day (Dec. 17) in 1933 and 1935, respectively.
  20. That's true. He found ways.
  21. there are still plenty of idiots crashing and burning.
  22. Well, he had cards stacked against him -- race, sexuality -- and though he was successful, his life was hardly perfect. I don't feel sorry for him but I think it is fair to recognize & hold empathy for what caused him turbulence.
  23. yeah, I saw him only once with Lee Konitz and Marc Johnson. It was good, but I think at the time I had a more steady diet of freer Bley and wish I could take my 2024 ears back to that night.
  24. Oh for sure. I was quite floored by the Coleman disc, though, as I wasn't expecting what I got!
  25. Solo Lacy is a very different album. I like the duo with Altena but it's quite different than Maarten's own records. It would have been interesting to hear the Altena of Stairs! and Porto Novo in duo with Lacy (or trio with Bennink) ca. 1967, though Lumps is a pretty enjoyable affair as well. Lacy was quite raucous in those years!
