  1. heroin is still a very widely used drug in the US, as are other opiates, in a variety of communities. It's nasty stuff; I'm probably not the only one on this board who has had friends who were addicted and succumbed to the drug. But yes, among post-Bird jazz musicians, there was a significant number who battled 'personal problems" to varying degrees.
  2. I have certainly read that too in the last few years.
  3. cool. Looks to be backordered. I'll keep an eye out for better prices, as I do want the set.
  4. yeah, I have the double LP as well. Strong set.
  5. that should definitely be a standalone record. like Groucho said, I don't want to be part of any club that would have me as a member! not seeing anything here that hasn't been available over the years in various forms. Some great records but nothing super enticing.
  6. Moncur was a really interesting character. From what I read, Blue Note weren't too happy that he chose to keep his publishing. His tunes are amazing; like the Shorter brothers, he was from Newark (a few years younger) and seemed to have an interest in the fantastical, but kept things swinging in his own way. He had very significant substance problems and that presumably is part of why he was off the scene for long periods. Love "Let 'Em Roll" by Big John Patton, and along with Larry Young, he's my favorite of the BN organists' stable.
  7. wish I'd seen this! out of stock, and in the US it is still showing at $80.
  8. Glad to have seen Hill, Hutcherson, Moncur, and McLean at least. I never saw Roy, mostly because I was not always so enthused about who he was playing with. My mistake.
  9. kinda wild to look at some of these album covers (and listen to their contents), realizing that everyone participating is now gone.
  10. From an interview I did with Murray in 2003. It's on the AAJ site, which I detest and refuse to drive traffic to, but if you want me to email you a pdf I'll gladly do that.
  11. Not much to say other than a hearty thanks for so many decades of great music. RIP.
  12. +1, great to see you 'round these parts, MG!
  13. thanks, consulting for now but it is not my preferred option. I suppose a lot of these reference books are like beautiful boxed sets -- great looking on the shelf and for a few flips, but not regularly out of the racks.
  14. aha! Yes, librarian/archivist here too (and looking for new employment! fun!). I would say, too, that the Sun Ra book might have more valid space in compact shelving than the J-Jazz book, even with a university acquisitions budget...
  15. yeah, '86ed from it now. Too bad.
  16. yeah, overseas cheapies are best ordered in bulk.
  17. hmm, so do I now, though it worked the first time.
  18. now the Reid I do have. Excellent. Ordered the Raushiek for a cheap price online, liked the clips I listened to.
  19. amazing, thanks so much!
  20. Okay, I have never seen that record in my life.
  21. yes, true, but in the long run print will outlive the internet as we know it. Websites go away but the image on the page will certainly last.
  22. This. RIP. Does the sammich thread still exist? I could not find it. Extremely funny as I remember...
  23. that's too bad. RIP, excellent trombonist.
