To be fair, I haven't bought any MM reissues. But I also did most of my BN buying before MM came around, so perhaps I would've felt differently if I didn't already have many of these titles in some form or another. I also don't get the reissue collecting approach but certainly others do, so... one thing that turned me off initially was the number of complaints about shoddy craftsmanship, which may have improved some in the intervening years.

I don't really care about OP too much -- on the Verve selections I've heard from the 1950s, he's not offensive -- just a bit too florid for my taste given the context. But I can deal if I have to. It's the later stuff with him leading the charge I can't stand but that's easily avoidable.

Welcome back, Allen! You've been missed.

it's in the blurb linked in the first post. Not that it's true... people just getting into the music aren't likely to spend $40+ on a reissue, no? Maybe times are different and that's part of the lifestyle but... when I was first buying Blue Notes on LP and CD I took whatever I could get and only later sought out nicer versions (still have some clunky, ring-worn black note issues alas). I feel like there are a ton of fascinating non-BN sessions that could use audiophile treatment. Maybe some LP-era Savoy titles or the Tom Wilson sides produced for UA? Who wouldn't want a bright, crisp-sounding copy of Matador?

Any Post-Rockers in the house?
clifford_thornton replied to Scott Dolan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, let me frame it better than "the least." He does have a clean, metronomic beat when behind the kit. However, most of the time he was behind a laptop and some sort of mini keyboard from which he played sampled vibes/marimba parts (leading to speculation that he may have hand issues? not sure). He also played a little bass, doing a few of Bundy's parts from the first record, though not near as sharply. -

Steely Can = Sea & Cake or some of Tortoise's music. I find the term endearing at this point, though it was meant as a put down. Only Floyd I really bother with is the Barrett stuff. I did not like them at all until I heard Piper at the Gates! -

Town And Country were good. Really good, actually. Morton Feldman-y in the best moments, but could build up a heck of a racket as well. Saw them several times. Saw Tortoise last night and it was not all that exciting. I feel like their newer music is more staid and not very creative rhythmically. What attracted me to their work in the mid-90s was certainly the rhythmic and textural variety at play, which I hadn't heard in much noise rock or post punk or whatever else I was digging into up to that point. When they played music from TNT or their first record at Le Poisson Rouge, it was clear the difference between that work and what they're doing now (and have been since Standards!). What I remember from seeing them at a sweaty club in Bozeman in May 1996 or in Lawrence shortly thereafter was how chaotic and intense they were live, and the sense that they were discovering the musical path they were on right as we were also having that experience. It was fresh and wild. The best aspect last night was John Herndon's drumming -- he's an absolute monster, and has a great feel for the kit. In 21 years I think he's improved the most as a musician, while everybody else kinda just does their thing (McEntire seems to contribute the least in concert, from my visual perspective). Tara Jane O'Neil (ex-Rodan, Sonora Pine, Retsin) opened and was excellent as always. Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo) also did a spellbinding solo guitar set with minimal effects-laden playing. She was super. -
PMs replied to -- still much good stuff here so I urge y'all to take punts.

Clearing out a bit more and paring down again, so here goes the latest list. I'm sure there will be another pretty soon. A few of these remain sealed, others have some cover wear (dang digipaks) but all are cheap so please help me get them out of here. Many are in fact excellent albums that I wish I had room for, but decisions must be made. Surely there'll be another one of these soon. Unless noted, single CDs are $5 US and double discs or whatever else are as marked. I don't use jewel cases but a few of these still have 'em. Paypal Only and No Long Holds Please (no more than 48 hours). $3 shipping for 1-5 discs in the US, Canada/Mex/overseas/interplanetary at cost. PM with your wants, first come first served. Yeah, even if the records post-TNT are spotty I try to see them anytime they play. First show I saw was '96 on the Millions Now Living tour and that was superb. Probably seen them six times since? Always excellent. -

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say -- and I agree that Mengelberg's intentions had a dark humor and perhaps leapt into the void (to borrow from Yves Klein) -- but I've experienced beauty and a lot of joy in Misha's music, whether or not he intended it to be there!

no, but I've heard of them. Kicking myself for being too tired/busy to make Skryptor on Sunday night -- writer/drummer Hank Shteamer (STATS), guitarist Tim Garrigan (Dazzling Killmen), bassist David McClelland (Craw) -- but they presumably fit the bill, more math rock-y though. And they have a Braxton tune (Comp. 23C) in their set list. Surely there'll be more performances.
