  1. he booted that Art Jackson's Atrocity (Henry Kaiser) thing as well, which was circulating for several years as a download until he put it out as a limited LP. He's also done this with stuff from Sun Ra trees. Here's another example and another example. Funkadelic is pretty funny, clearly just wrote on an old beat up stock black cover with glitter pen...
  2. yeah, it's hard to tell what you're getting sometimes, but with those paste-on covers and frequently cited as "no label" from Italy, they're all his. He also booted the rare Ron Everett "Glitter from the City" LP and sold it as an old-stock original. Nothing new in the world of psych and private rock dealing over the decades, but in jazz these waters are a little more uncharted.
  3. Yes. Probably got this stuff off of dime and had it pressed up with Dogtown etchings. He's legendary for these antics but people with money keep buying stuff from him and presumably don't care. He was also selling LPs of stuff grabbed from the old WKCR archives streaming site in editions of 99. Truly crass.
  4. It's a bootleg made by the seller, Emanuele Pinotti. He's done this before.
  5. he's American and doesn't use the umlaut. Also, Arthur Williams is great. He's on very few recordings so the stuff with Kuhn is essential.
  6. Ray Stephen Oché and His Matumbo - No Discrimination - (Esperance, FR)
  7. Haha! I do wonder if anyone who hears this music will actually go and seek out John Coltrane. It certainly appeals to a different, less jazz-centered audience.
  8. How is the sound and the notes on the Jordan? I have the Strata East LPs included but the unissued material entices. Then again, used ones on eBay recently have been hitting over $200 and I'm not sure that's worth it for a couple sessions only.
  9. should change the thread title to read Saft, not "Saff."
  10. Massimo Urbani - Dedication to A.A. & J.C./Max's Mood - (Red Record, IT)
  11. yeah, their archival stuff is pretty off-the-charts but the new releases are often quite excellent as well. the Kuhns (Livin' Right expanded and the new material) are both recommended. He's an excellent player and a good person.
  12. Heard this last night -- sad news. He seemed like quite a character, and both his visual and auditory art are fascinating. Have quite a lot of his LPs and tried on several occasions to interview him (couldn't get his gallery reps to help, alas).
  13. Yes, entirely fair and true. Somehow "check out my Soundcloud" probably doesn't work at gigs. also, it takes me a long time to warm up to a release, usually well after the point I've had to review it. One reason I couldn't really get into the year-end list thing, as there's no way I've either heard enough or understood enough to be reasonably objective in picking 10-20 essential discs by December.
  14. One reason I don't post in this thread too often is that there's just so much music to take in and, at least in the contemporary avant-garde realm, a lot of it features the same players over and over in slightly different combinations. It's hard to get very excited about that stuff. I also tend to enjoy it more live. To me the most consistent labels right now are Nessa and Emanem, and I've enjoyed the variety on NoBusiness as well. Improvising Beings is quite interesting even if not all of their releases are my cup of tea (ugEXPLODE used to be like this too -- always worth checking out even if extremely left-field). Maybe Clean Feed and Intakt have sharpened their games but I got pretty bored with their catalogs years ago -- too many releases that basically sounded the same. NotTwo is pretty reliable indeed -- that Joelle box is great.
  15. the cover photo is amazing.
  16. an empty box in this thread is quite appropriate.
  17. cool, thanks for the tip. At least I am assuming that "backorder" means OOP in this situation.
  18. Since I'm now a little doubtful the Clifford Jordan and Savoy sets will come back in print, does anyone have a line on copies?
  19. It's a classic. One of the first avant-garde jazz records I bought, and still one of the best I've heard.
  20. Hiho Keitaro, Maeda Norio, Yamaya Kiyoshi -- Modern Jazz Composer's Corner -- (Toshiba, JP stereo orig) Interesting compilation of postwar Japanese jazz released on Toshiba (dark red vinyl) in 1959. Some of it one could imagine on a Savoy or Debut side, though this is a bit straighter. For an early Japanese pressing the sound is quite good.
  21. I had a dream last night where I went to Allen Lowe's house for some timed jazz-crossword party and couldn't get any of the answers right. It was stressful. how's that for thread drift?
  22. probably, if it was Mike Ascherman's table. Bought some other nice pieces from him.
  23. yeah, punk is expensive and very hot in collectors' circles. Many punk and DIY records are, understandably, far rarer than a choice Blue Note or even a Saturn LP. this site is often a fun gaze: https://ryebreadrodeo.com/
  24. have my eye on a couple; it'll be sad when they go but it was a great run. Hope we're given notice indeed.
