Wonderful set, so underestimated as a chronicle of improvisation at it's best. I only have the LP and would like to get the discs. Looks like the box is selling for around $100 at Amazon UK.

Yeah, I still listen to that one fairly regularly and it's probably still my favorite of that group of albums. Finally got the Candid LP (German press) of the session with Bley and Swallow. It's interesting though I do prefer How Time Passes and Essence.

I've passed on that John Gordon a few times - maybe I should grab it next time if it's not stupidly expensive.

Yeah, the recording isn't that hot in the first place.

I'll just plug my own list here, which is alphabetized so as to avoid hierarchy and in a 24 new/12 reissue or unearthed format.

Oh, Wah Wah - they've done a number of psych/Krautrock reissues. I always assumed their stuff was booted but clearly I'm wrong. Hope she got paid decently. Original Blue Notes and so forth generally sound really good, but I'm with you - I'd rather cough up the dough for something that hasn't been reissued than something that is more easily available. Most of my BNs are 60s/70s pressings or Japanese, same with Prestige/Riverside. I don't care too much about FMP or ESP addresses, either... but some sweet private-press or small-label joint, I'd like to have the original.

Yeah... in fact, my vinyl copy of ICP 002 sounds stunning, which isn't the case with the transfer. I mean, I don't feel like a total asshole or "taken" by the box, but I do think it could have been done better considering the material and resources. It's by no means a perfect set, and considering the organization's importance, it should be damn near that.

There are a couple of problems I have with the set so far (other than fiscal inaccessibility for most): 1) The needle-drops don't sound all that great so far. Honestly, I think I have better vinyl copies than some of the sources they used. 2) The Boersma photos are great, but like the wonderful books that came with the FMP boxes For Example, Cecil Taylor in Berlin, and In Retrospect, there's a dearth of liner notes/exhaustive session information. I suppose they didn't want to pay writers? Surely there are enough living critics/historians of the Dutch scene that this could have been done in an interesting way. The "Contents" sheet is pretty hard to read and not entirely sensible. 3) "Hand painted" my ass. I'll be working through the set over the next month and hope to have an exhaustive writeup on it myself in the early spring. I'm glad the set exists but there are some things I wish that ICP/Challenge had done differently.

As far as I can see Dolphy appears on one track only, Epistrophy at 17:52 on disc 016. I hope you didn't buy this in the expectation of hearing a lot of unreleased Eric Dolphy. I have several of the ICP releases, having more Dolphy would have just been a bonus. I didn't know if there was more music with Han Beninick than just The Last Date Han Bennink is well represented. I think you will be dealing with some some needle drops. I've been through about 10 discs. As far as Dolphy-Bennink, nothing else has been released. I'll have to check my discography to see how many dates the quartet played - I think there are a couple in addition to the studio recording that resulted in the Fontana/Limelight LP. Guess I shouldn't be too surprised about needle drops here and there. I have most of the early stuff on LP and the pressings on those are decent enough. Masters may be gone or in Breuker's archive, which may not be all that accessible since his passing - I don't know.
