  1. Yeah, Buell spoke of that one when I interviewed him. He also mentioned working with Andrew White around that time. HG, I think you should still be able to get Silkheart CDs from places like Birka Jazz or other Scandinavian online shops. Jazz Loft and Northcountry also get 'em in as overstock from time to time. The Gayles are solid enough. There's also some great records by Dennis Gonzalez, Steve Lacy and Alvin Fielder on the label. You should dig in deep!
  2. I may have that one somewhere - can't recall if I kept it. It's funny, when I interviewed Sunny, I'll be damned if he could pronounce Assif's name - it was always "whatever the cat's name is..."
  3. Far more intriguing is this: World's 2nd Greatest Music Collection
  4. A load of 'my dick's bigger than yours' stuff going on at that board - as in 'my subscription number is lower than yours'. Jeez.. A while back I did a mean thing on the board. Under the thread asking about subscription numbers I said I had a number that was the same as someone else who had recently signed up but hadn't received any records yet. I think it freaked him out a little. I did it to underscore the rediculousness of such dick measuring but I probably shouldn't have done it. I ignored his questions regarding my number (I'm not a subscriber) too which probably caused him to lose a little sleep.
  5. seller threw me back 75 so now I have to keep it. I can imagine how much better the real thing must sound. thanks for getting me through this tuff time. I'd be pumped on a $75 Liberty re-press. Glad the seller helped you out.
  6. Well, on Bagatellen and I Hate Music, the erstwhile label and other Rat-esque musics seem to be discussed regularly. I mean, a lot of lowercase improv and things like that really fall well outside the interests of most people on this board.
  7. Isn't that the joke inherent in the title? I suspect Axl's been goofin' this whole time.
  8. Yeah, I saw one on eBay once - went for about a hundred bucks. I think there are two different aggregations of Cox's band on there.
  9. I have that same problem and I don't know why. The Blue Notes are all swell and his stuff from the '70s is very courageous music. I have heard less (very little, in fact) of his recent work.
  10. And, as a modern art historian, I take issue with "throwing paint on canvas." It ain't that simple, folks...
  11. Yeah, that stunt-riding shit is just asking for it...
  12. I mean, I used to have friends who were bike messengers in Chicago and NYC. I mean, they'd weave thru city traffic at a good clip, but we're talking 20 mph in traffic that may be a little more "used" to it.
  13. But you think... how many people in, say, music school have good taste in musics of any other sort than the one they're ostensibly "studying?" This dude was doing "Imaginary Landscape" with his itunes and it was a mix of, you know, Carter, Varese, Haydn, Bjork, and Wilco samples. From a young composer at UT Austin. I mean... c'mon, you know - the UT music library is FULL of tons of neat shit and that's what he could come up with.
  14. No shit. I've always been partial to "Non-Alignment Pact."
  15. This friend of mine knew a guy in Chicago whose response to every "dick-size" record comment was this: "Yeah, but I've got a Coltrane album on his own label."
  16. Athearn is the way to go. I'm down to Atlas. Yes, the EMD demo SD-24 is really nice-looking. They do an excellent job. I haven't modeled trains since High School - used to be very into the Rock Island and Missouri Pacific.
  17. Anybody heard Joe Giardullo's Red Morocco (Rogue Art, 2007) ? One of only two large ensemble recordings by this very interesting saxophonist (he's got some great solo discs). Listening to it right now.
  18. I have his head in my freezer. There, I've said it and I don't care WHO knows! Well, you ARE a trombone player...
  19. Well, not to sound petty, but have you listened to any of the people he trumpets? I know Chuck and Larry are way keyed-in to the Chicago scene(s), and I've heard probably only a smidgen of recent vanguard music of that area comparatively. That said, I think they're quite right. As I and others have said, if you really like music, you'll wade into it deeply.
  20. I think you're taking Clem's posts a lot more personally than you need to. He does make one think. (edit: for Alexander)
  21. I mean, I'm just pointing out that if one digs, even in the crap-bin that is NPR, one can still find "decent" stuff. I mean, yeah, four bits on J Redman is not excused by a lil' bit on Dave Burrell, but I'm just sayin'... Didn't know that FD was her husband or that he wrote anything about the America catalog. My pick is the Emergency LP, but...
