  1. That duo is pretty bonkers. Can't say I have a favorite, but for me the group with Howard, Few and Ali is pretty unstoppable. The ESPs are good, but I don't think they're as fully-realized as other/later records. Edit to add that I believe Muhammad is younger.
  2. That Gordon Beck record is pretty good. Oxley's a fine "time" player, sort of reminiscent (to me) of Joe Chambers or a young Tony Williams. Certainly, his more "sound"-oriented structural work in improvised music is of a piece, and quite unique. I think they have to be taken differently, and the latter within the context of either his own compositions or frameworks that allow him to work in "abstract" areas.
  3. Yes, it's a '70s issue. Mine has a Krumville, NY address on the back and a catalog into the 3000 series (even advertising the Nadolski "New Music from Poland" LP that was never issued). I prefer the white cover image to the black one.
  4. Late's perception of Riley is spot-on, especially the Crispell connection (I think I made the same reference in a review of a disc by the Guy/Crispell/Lytton trio). It's interesting to hear the progression of his music across the trios in the '60s/early '70s - always with Barry Guy, and Jon Hiseman, Alan Jackson and Tony Oxley occupying the drum chair. The electro-acoustic improvisation of the Oxley years is great, but I have a fondness for the structures of The Day Will Come (Guy wrote a lot of the pieces there) and the supple-yet-agitated swing of Discussions, his first as a leader.
  5. Yeah, welcome to the board and much love and respect to your father. Though I never saw him play (a bit too young), his music has brought me much joy over the years. Thank you Frank.
  6. Wish I had some spending cash right now, would love those OG Derams...
  7. I'll take two if there really are some left.
  8. Another happy birthday to James Spaulding, 71 years young today!
  9. Evidently I must re-calibrate my Prez ears, because the mention of Cliff Jordan is rather surprising.
  10. Anybody read Durium's blog post? Really nice. The film he linked of Griff with A.T., Urtreger and Cullaz is really happening.
  11. Not that it needs it, mind you... one of Tyler's best, IMO.
  12. Any extra material from the period on this, or just the concert as released?
  13. Glad you're okay, Allen, and glad it didn't result from some restaurant in Bennington. I'm fine without jewel boxes, and the whole Gould-bating is a little tiresome. Nothing personal, just remarking my own feelings.
  14. Sad news. RIP and thanks for your work and your sound.
  15. I'd be into hearing that one, though I've never been a follower of Matt Wilson's work.
  16. Yeah, that happened sometimes when they were using leftover labels in transitional periods. I can't remember when BN moved from W. 63rd to W. 61st - sometime around what, '62 or '63? Labels don't always denote original - I have seen W 63rd labels on non-Van Gelder (Liberty-era) vinyl.
  17. Yeah, from what I understand, some folks have heard of him.
  18. I'm starting to turn around on these Andorran labels, etc. If the major labels or the labels that own the material aren't doing anything at all, or are fucking up the releases, might as well let somebody else do it.
  19. Is the opening side of the LP off-vertical, as if the guillotine was cutting the thing at wrong angle? Every one of this title I've ever seen has had that ! Mine's in storage, else I'd check the labels. It's mono and sounds like a bat out of hell!
  20. Looks like one of those weird Xian private releases. Church hymns, I suspect.
  21. You can't pay royalties if the records don't sell or if the distributor don't pay you/give you sales records.
  22. Coffee black as oil, with a layer of silt on top.
  23. Or Lester Bowie's atheistic LP on Muse, Rope-A-Pope.
  24. I believe there will be some unissued material in the Braxton set as well. Can't wait.
  25. Maybe take a nod from Ribot and do Albert Ayler tunes?
