Don't have Oblique for some reason...
I've probably spent the most time with Stick-Up, and have only recently warmed to Dialogue, despite the fact that it was the first Hutch LP that I picked up.
Yeah, I have both editions and it's hard to tell which was first; I am not sure when Red came on the scene, but assumed it was in the mid-70s.
The session was recorded at the RCA Italiana studios, not that that precludes a label affiliation.
Of course, that latter portion was left out of Stopping Time.
Pardon the furthering of this digression, but you might be interested to read my Altschul interview at AAJ.
I couldn't find anything on the board that had already alerted us to the passing of Henri Chopin, an interesting figure in the intermedia arts world. I just found out today.
RIP.
Yeah, when I mentioned to Altschul that the Bley Trio was one of the "most recorded" American bands in Europe at the time, he seemed kinda surprised by that assertion.
I believe there was one on GTA that went unissued, or perhaps was the source of the Actuel session - things get a little confusing the more the tapes change hands...
And it looks like they restored the original cover too!
Sorry, I'm not one for Ornette's paintings...
Not even the Empty Foxhole? That painting is cool!
It's just a detail of something larger and probably not as cool.
Don't get me wrong, I love abstract/modernist painting, but I see this as a diversifying of talents that should have stayed in the musical realm... just my .02, of course.
Yeah, the only one I've spent any time with (and that still isn't a lot) is Unity, on EPI, with Gerald Wise, Byard Lancaster, Eric Gravatt a.o. Pretty smokin' session, if memory isn't failing me.
He's a fine drummer with Pharoah and Shepp, but I could see how his approach might not have the specifics about what Jackie would have wanted.
Jackie was very much concerned with the history of the music being present as part of the path to moving forward. If that wasn't clearly happening from a chosen musician, well then, what's the point?
Do you know if tapes exist of the proposed Bley "Double LP" for ESP?
I know it was proposed in the late '60s, but obviously nothing came of it. Think it may have been assigned a catalog number.
Also, Bernard has noted that some tape issues with the Lacy were corrected, so it might be worth a purchase. Sounded good to me on the first pass of this edition, though I always thought my 5th Ave. vinyl sounded pretty nice.
