  1. Apropos of the "unissued" Reid Miles covers, I think that Dimensions & Extensions is one of those at-the-time-unissued BNs that may have had quite an impact. The ensemble writing is really spectacular. Thoughts?
  2. Wow, I normally try to stay away from The Man.
  3. Actually, there are some things I would avoid for $5. That $5 is a sandwich or a beer and a half to some of us! That Gonzalez is pretty hot - Eskelin is in fine form.
  4. I saw her in two gigs that weren't all that successful, but it wasn't her fault. Have enjoyed her readings of Annette Peacock tunes and Amaryllis as well.
  5. I think I liked him best either in duo with Cooper-Moore or sitting in with In Order To Survive.
  6. Yeah, the Murray titles on the label are sweet, and that's a great place to start! I've long had a fondness for the Alan Braufman, which isn't on CD. It's a very early recording of Cooper-Moore, then going by his birth name, Gene Ashton. Though they don't get a lot of love by some, I think the minimal music issued on the label is pretty great - Yoshi Wada, Arnold Dreyblatt, Phill Niblock.
  7. Not compared to here, nope!
  8. The unaccompanied bit reminded me a bit of JR Monterose.
  9. Yeah, Buell spoke of that one when I interviewed him. He also mentioned working with Andrew White around that time. HG, I think you should still be able to get Silkheart CDs from places like Birka Jazz or other Scandinavian online shops. Jazz Loft and Northcountry also get 'em in as overstock from time to time. The Gayles are solid enough. There's also some great records by Dennis Gonzalez, Steve Lacy and Alvin Fielder on the label. You should dig in deep!
  10. I may have that one somewhere - can't recall if I kept it. It's funny, when I interviewed Sunny, I'll be damned if he could pronounce Assif's name - it was always "whatever the cat's name is..."
  11. Far more intriguing is this: World's 2nd Greatest Music Collection
  12. A load of 'my dick's bigger than yours' stuff going on at that board - as in 'my subscription number is lower than yours'. Jeez.. A while back I did a mean thing on the board. Under the thread asking about subscription numbers I said I had a number that was the same as someone else who had recently signed up but hadn't received any records yet. I think it freaked him out a little. I did it to underscore the rediculousness of such dick measuring but I probably shouldn't have done it. I ignored his questions regarding my number (I'm not a subscriber) too which probably caused him to lose a little sleep.
  13. seller threw me back 75 so now I have to keep it. I can imagine how much better the real thing must sound. thanks for getting me through this tuff time. I'd be pumped on a $75 Liberty re-press. Glad the seller helped you out.
  14. Well, on Bagatellen and I Hate Music, the erstwhile label and other Rat-esque musics seem to be discussed regularly. I mean, a lot of lowercase improv and things like that really fall well outside the interests of most people on this board.
  15. Isn't that the joke inherent in the title? I suspect Axl's been goofin' this whole time.
  16. Yeah, I saw one on eBay once - went for about a hundred bucks. I think there are two different aggregations of Cox's band on there.
  17. I have that same problem and I don't know why. The Blue Notes are all swell and his stuff from the '70s is very courageous music. I have heard less (very little, in fact) of his recent work.
  18. And, as a modern art historian, I take issue with "throwing paint on canvas." It ain't that simple, folks...
  19. Yeah, that stunt-riding shit is just asking for it...
  20. I mean, I used to have friends who were bike messengers in Chicago and NYC. I mean, they'd weave thru city traffic at a good clip, but we're talking 20 mph in traffic that may be a little more "used" to it.
  21. But you think... how many people in, say, music school have good taste in musics of any other sort than the one they're ostensibly "studying?" This dude was doing "Imaginary Landscape" with his itunes and it was a mix of, you know, Carter, Varese, Haydn, Bjork, and Wilco samples. From a young composer at UT Austin. I mean... c'mon, you know - the UT music library is FULL of tons of neat shit and that's what he could come up with.
  22. No shit. I've always been partial to "Non-Alignment Pact."
  23. This friend of mine knew a guy in Chicago whose response to every "dick-size" record comment was this: "Yeah, but I've got a Coltrane album on his own label."
